  • Purpose - The purpose of the study was to investigate the financial difficulty of the elderly in each income group and to examine the factors having related influence. The study adopted models with Korean welfare panel material and examined factors that having influence upon low income elderly's selection on retail business. Research design, data, and methodology - The study investigated the effects having influence upon the financial difficulty of elderly household as well as common household. It also examined independence variables having influence upon household's financial stress and found out the direction of financial control in elderly household. The study investigated the effect of financial stress upon economy to support consumption of the elderly. Results - In cases of financial difficulties, independent variables of the debt increased the financial difficulties of elderly households relying upon traditional markets. The elderly households had financial difficulties because of independent variables of the debt except for loan from financial institution. Conclusions - In this study, the elderly's financial stress had influence upon the use of retail business and the characteristics of residing and family. Further study shall give support policies for the elderly to alleviate financial burden.

  • The primary recognized health risk from common deficiencies in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytoprotective enzyme for oxidative stress, is red blood cell hemolysis. Here we show that litters from untreated pregnant mutant mice with a hereditary G6PD deficiency had increased prenatal (fetal resorptions) and postnatal death. When treated with the anticonvulsant drug phenytoin, a human teratogen that is commonly used in pregnant women and causes embryonic oxidative stress, G6PD-deficient dams had higher embryonic DNA oxidation and more fetal death and birth defects. The reported G6PD gene mutation was confirmed and used to genotype fetal resorptions, which were primarily G6PD deficient. This is the first evidence that G6PD is a developmentally critical cytoprotective enzyme for both endogenous and xenobiotic-initiated embryopathic oxidative stress and DNA damage. G6PD deficiencies accordingly may have a broader biological relevance as important determinants of infertility, in utero and postnatal death, and teratogenesis.-Nicol, C. • Although acute traumatic fractures of the clavicle are relatively common, stress fractures of the proximal clavicle are extremely rare. Stress fractures of the clavicle have often been reported after a radical neck dissection or radiation but rarely occur during excessive repetitive exercise in professional athletes. The authors report a case of a stress fracture of the proximal clavicle during exercise in a young man with no specific preceding factors, which has not been reported in the Korean literature.

  • The sudden deafness and tinnitus caused by stress is a very common otorhinolaryngologic disease. But, we do not know the exact cause and the healing method of that. We have a case report of the patient who has the sudden deafness and tinnitus caused by stress. He has also insomnia, neck pain, general weakness and so forth. In this study the patient classified by Sasang constitutional medicine had a notable medical effects. And in the result, any symptoms are not remained. So we report the healing process and result of this patient in this study.

  • Fatigue cracks in structural components are the most common cause of structural failure when exposed to fatigue loading. In this respect, fatigue crack detection and structural health assessment are very important. Currently, various smart materials are used for detecting fatigue crack and measurement of SIFs(Stress Intensity Factors). So, this paper presented a measurement of SIFs using MFC(Micro Fiber Composite) sensor which is the one of the smart material. MFC sensor is more flexible, durable and reliable than other smart materials. The SIFs of Mode I(K I) as well as Mode II(K II) based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. In this study, the SIF values measured by MFC sensors are compared with the theoretical results.

  • There is growing scientific evidence linking excess body weight to breast cancer risk. However, there is no common consensus on this relation due partly to methodologies used, populations studied and the cancer subtype. We report here a summary of the present state of knowledge on the role of overweight and obesity in pathogenesis of breast cancer and possible mechanisms through which excess body weight might influence the risk, focusing on the role of oxidative stress in breast cancer etiology. The findings demonstrate duality of excess body weight action in dependence on menopausal status: a statistically significant increased risk in postmenopausal overweight/ obese women and non-significant preventive effect among premenopausal women. Due to several gaps in the literature on this topic, additional studies are needed. Future research should address factors influencing the excess body weight - breast cancer relationship, such as race/ethnicity, tumor subtype, receptor status, the most appropriate measure of adiposity, reproductive characteristics, and lifestyle components.

  • Several experimental investigations have been carried out to study the behavior of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices. However, very few analytical models have been developed for the analysis of such columns subjected to earthquakes. As nonlinear analysis procedures become more common in practice (such as those outlined in the Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the United States), the need for an accurate and reliable representation of the nonlinear response of strength degrading systems becomes more important. In this study, an analytical model for estimating the complete response of reinforced concrete columns with short lap splices is presented. The model is based on local bond stress-slip relationships and is validated against independent experimental data from cyclic loading tests on reinforced concrete columns with typical construction details of the 1960s. In this paper a simple equation for calculating the bar stress at splice failure is presented. Use of the proposed equation resulted in excellent agreement between the measured and calculated strength at splice failure.

  • It is common to assume identical allowable safety factors in static strength defined by mean stress and in fatigue, defined by stress amplitude. Under the load with asymmetrical cycles the safety factor is not the same. In this paper, with the consideration of unequal allowable safety (actors a general method for estimating fatigue reliability of a machine element under a combined state of stress is derived based on the theory proposed by Prof. Kececioglu and a normal distribution. The calculation of fatigue reliability fur limited life is discussed with example.

  • A major mechanical problem with total hip replacement is the loosening of the femoral component. The loss of proximal support, with firm fixation distally, has been thought to be a major caused of fatigue failure of femoral stems. While many causes have been proposed, the most frequently suggested cause of the calcar resorption is the disuse atrophy of the cortex of the calcar due to the stress shielding of the proximal bone by the metal femoral stem. In this research, the new-designed stem(modified collar stem) was considered which made a hole inside stem and had a 3 mm thickness. Using the 3-dimensional finite element methods, the common collar stem and the modified colla stem was modeled and analysed. Also, the two models was compared. The results showed that the modified collar stem decreased the stress-shielding and it made a effective load transfer at the entire femoral region.

  • This paper is to examine the applicability of ordinary Kriging interpolation(OK) to the p-adaptivity of the finite element analysis that is based on variogram. In the p-refinement, the analytical domain has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing the p-level non-uniformly or selectively. In case of non-uniform p-distribution, the continuity between elements with different polynomial orders is achieved by assigning zero higher-order derivatives associated with the edge in common with the lower-order derivatives. It is demonstrated that the validity of the proposed approach by analyzing results for stress singularity problem.
