A Study on Performance Comparison of COTS Operating Systems for a Mission Computer Using UAV Collision Avoidance Algorithm (무인기 충돌회피 알고리즘을 이용한 임무컴퓨터용 상용기성품 운영체계 성능 비교에 대한 연구)

  • There has been an increase in the number of researches on the segment for commercialization after developing avionics systems. In this paper, we have applied a commercial off-the-shelf(COTS) operating systems in an aircraft mission computer. We used UAV collision avoidance algorithms to compare the performance of COTS operating systems. The UAV collision avoidance algorithms were tested on different operating systems to compare the performances of the operating systems. The measured parameters are memory usage and processing time. We have verified that the UAV collision avoidance algorithms worked successfully and compared the performance of each operating system.

  • Standard design and suitable environmental test method should be applied to increase the reliability of UAV flight control systems. UAV flight control systems under development domestically have enough capabilities for complicated missions. However, most low cost systems are not designed with concepts of compatibility, adaptability, and environmental compliance. This paper explains ATR(Air Transport Rack) standard that is widely used on aircraft. The paper presents a design uses commercial off-the-shelf parts. The paper also presents various environmental standards for airborne equipments, including U.S. military specifications. The developed FCS was tested under these specifications. The paper shows the test procedures and results.

  • Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) standard has been proposed to separate the baseband signal processing unit from the Radio Frequency (RF) unit at base station system mainly for reducing the cost of base station systems through open-source interfaces between the two units. To satisfy the performance metrics in various scenarios, several fronthaul functional split options were presented by O-RAN. Amongst these options, the split option 7-2x is widely adopted in practical applications due to its excellent trade-off between the required bandwidth and RU overhead. In this paper, we present a hardware implementation of a base station system that is compliant with the Category B of O-RAN split option 7-2x. It consists of O-DU and O-RU implemented with a commercial off-the-shelf Digital Signal Processor and RF transceiver, respectively. The performance of the proposed base station system is evaluated in terms of Bit Error Rate and received signal power as well as the required fronthaul bandwidth. Through various experimental tests, we have observed that the proposed system reduces the fronthaul bandwidth nearly by 89.7% compared to the conventional system that dose not employ the O-RAN standard.

  • The current trend of low cost ultra-small satellites is to utilize Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) parts to save cost, and accordingly, Command and Data Handling (C&DH) that operates the satellite and collects/processes the data is also designed and developed around commercial controllers. However, functionalities of commercial controllers are limited according to the specs outlined by the manufacturer. In order for the commercial controllers to be used for satellites where variety of interfaces is required, a separate interface circuit is required. Therefore, a Multi Digital Data Control System (MDDCS) using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has been developed in order to expand multiple digital interfaces that are not supported by the commercial controller, and also to compensate for SEU. This has been implemented on Actel A3P1000 using Very High Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL).

  • The impact of gamma radiation on a commercial off the shelf microcontroller board has been investigated. Three different tests have been performed to ascertain the radiation tolerance of the device from a nuclear decommissioning deployment perspective. The first test analyses the effect of radiation on the output voltage of the on-board voltage regulator during irradiation. The second test evaluated the effect of gamma radiation on the voltage characteristics of analogue and digital inputs and outputs. The final test analyses the functionality of the microcontroller when using an external, shielded voltage regulator instead of the on-board voltage regulator. The results suggest that a series of latch-ups occurs in the microcontroller during irradiation, causing increased current drain which can damage the voltage regulator if it does not have short-circuit protection. The analogue to digital conversion functionality appears to be more sensitive to gamma radiation than digital and analogue output functionality. Using an external, shielded voltage regulator can prove beneficial when used for certain applications. The collected data suggests that detaching the voltage regulator can extend the lifespan of the platform up to approximately 350 Gy.

  • COTS system is increasingly seen as one of the main jobs of reuse development. It involves reliability of COTS that might affect the project schedule or the quality of the software being developed and taking action to avoid these risks. The results of the COTS analysis should be documented in the project plan along with an analysis of the attribute and operation. Effective risk management makes it easier to cope with problems and to ensure that these do not lead to unacceptable budget or schedule slippage. This research provides criteria of analysis of risk items to the estimation of process milestone on COTS development.

  • Commercial Off The Shelf(COTS) based one-way communication is advantageous in that support a low cost communication and high speed one-way communication. This paper introduce a one-way communication method, and provides a implementation method of one-way communication through modified device driver for COTS NIC. Then, To verify the advantage of the COTS based one-way communication method, We present a sample implementation using Intel 82580 NIC, and present a possibility that can contribute to the realization of one-way communication through experiments on performance and reliability.

  • The shelf-life of commercial fresh and cooked noodles stored at $5^{\circ},\;15^{\circ}\;and\;25^{\circ}C$ were estimated based on bacterial count. The shelf-life of fresh noodles stored at $15^{\circ}\;and\;25^{\circ}$ were coincided with the development of off-flavor and of moldiness. The shelf-life of noodles was extended twice or more by lowering the storage temperature by $10^{\circ}C$.

  • In this paper, the New Space characteristics and response of micro & small satellite, and space industrialization strategy using domestic technologies are described. Recently, micro & small satellites are developed worldwide, including Starlink, having the characteristics of low-cost, light-weight and satellite constellation. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare for the constellation operation by considering the use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts, satellite weight, shape and mass production. In particular, it is necessary to develop Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) technology in consideration of the frequency interference during constellation operation, and to prepare and make efforts to secure frequencies in the government. Among the commercial-grade memories of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the space-grade memory field using radiation tolerant memory and the high reliable packaging and space environment test technology has potential as a space industrialization strategy.

  • As a concept that commercial parts are applied to weapon systems, Commercial Off-The-Shelf(COTS) was not well-received at a time when defense technology led commercial technology. However, the exponential growth of IT and the rapid expansion of commercial industry have made possible to make the cost low through mass production system within a short period, and the benefit of cost and schedule has been highlighted, triggering commercial parts to be applied to weapon systems. In order for commercial technology to be used in defense weapon systems, its performance in an extremely restricted condition of combat environment should be guaranteed. Generally, commercial parts have fundamental limitation in that the design and production requirements for commercial parts are different from those for the military. Therefore, it is required to confirm that commercial parts can be used for weapon systems through the approach of system engineering. This study presents the process tailored to characteristics of marine defense system and the method of analyzing its restricted condition in order to apply COTS to marine defense system. The study classifies the restricted conditions into general and special environments, suggests detailed process, and suggests useful tools to select appropriate items adapted to these restricted conditions in the commercial market. Lastly, as a case study for COTS applied to marine defense system, the study finds out the analysis results of application of COTS and restricted conditions of the warship electric system.
