  • This paper suggests two kinds of reaction control system command generation methods for upper stage attitude control of launch vehicles. The reaction control system is assumed to consist of two sets of three nozzles. One operation technology is based on mixed attitude error functions, and the other is based on command mixing functions. Both are compared via simulations. The simulation results show that the latter is comparatively preferable in terms of interference among control axes, independency of controller design and analysis among axes, and prediction of flight performance of each control axis.

  • In this study, an automatic command mode transition strategy of direct power control (DPC) is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) medium-voltage (MV) offshore wind turbines (WTs). Benchmarking against the control methods are performed based on a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) back-to-back type voltage source converter (VSC). The ramping rate criterion of complex power is utilized to select the switching vector in DPC for a three-level NPC converter. With a grid command and an MPPT mode transition strategy, the proposed control method automatically controls the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. The automatic command mode transition strategy of DPC is confirmed through PLECS simulations based on Matlab. The simulation result of the automatic mode transition strategy shows that the proposed control method of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control methods of MPPT and VOC under a step response. The proposed control method helps provide a good dynamic performance for PMSGs MV offshore WTs, thereby generating high quality output power.

  • A fault tolerant control system design technique has been proposed and analyzed for managing performance degradation in the presence of multiple faults in actuators. The method is based on a control structure with a model reference reconfigurable control design in an inner loop and command input adjustment in an outer loop. The reduced dynamic performance requirements in the presence of different actuator faults are accounted for through different performance reduced (degraded) reference models. The degraded steady-state performances are governed by the reduced levels of command input. The reconfigurable controller is designed on-line automatically in an explicit model reference control framework so that the dynamics of the closed-loop system follow that of the performance reduced reference model under each fault condition. The reduced command input level is determined to prevent potential actuator saturation. The proposed method has been evaluated and analyzed using an aircraft example against actuator faults subject to constraints on the magnitude and slew-rate of actuators.

  • A Photovoltaic (PV) system's power output varies with the change of climate. Frequency deviations, tie line voltage swings are caused by the varying PV power when large PV power from several PV systems is fed in the utility. In this paper, to overcome these problems, a simple coordinated control method for smoothing the variations of combined PV power from multiple PV systems is proposed. Here, output power command is formed in two steps: central and local. Fuzzy control is used to produce the central smoothing output power command considering insolation, variance of insolation and absolute average of frequency deviation. In local step, a simple coordination is kept between the central power command and the local power commands by producing a common tuning factor. Power converters are used to achieve the same output power as local command power employing PI control law for each of the PV generation systems. The proposed method is compared with the method where conventional Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control is used for each of the PV systems. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective for smoothing the output power variations and feasible to reduce the frequency deviations of the power utility.

  • A modified command shaping control to reduce residual vibrations at a target position and to limit the sway angle of the payload during traveling for container crane systems is investigated. When the maneuvering time is minimized, a large transient amplitude and steady state oscillations may occur inherently. Since a large swing of the payload during the transfer is dangerous, the control objective is to transfer a payload to the desired place as quickly as possible while limiting the swing angle of the payload during the transfer. The conventional shapers have been enhanced by adding one more constraint to limit intermediate sway angles of the payload. The developed method is shown to be more effective than other conventional shapers for prevention of an excessive transient sway. Computer simulation results are provided.

  • In the present paper, the mover speed control of a linear induction motor (LIM) using a sliding mode control design is proposed, considering the end effects. First, the indirect field-oriented control LIM is derived, considering the end effects. The sliding mode control design is then investigated to achieve speed- and flux-tracking under load thrust force disturbance. The numerical simulation results of the proposed scheme present good performances in comparison to that of the classical sliding mode control.

  • Many manufacturing devices must execute motions as quickly as possible to achieve profitable high-volume production. Most of them have devices having flexibility and a time delay of one sampling is added to the plants when they are controlled by fast discrete controllers, which brings about non-minimum phase zeros. This paper develops a control strategy that combines feedforward and feedback control with command shaping for such devices. First, the feedback controller is designed to increase damping and eliminate steady-state error. Next, the feedforward controller is designed to speed up the transient response. Finally, an appropriate reference profile is generated using command-shaping techniques to ensure fast point-to-point motions with minimum residual vibration. The particular focus of the paper is to understand the interactions between these individual control components. The resulting control strategy is demonstrated on a model of a high-speed semiconductor manufacturing machine.
