  • Various kinds of coals are supplied for coal fired power plants as the coal market situations are fluctuated with the high prices of oil and coals over the world. The quality of coal is decreasing as coal consumption increased and some specifications of coals are out of boiler design criteria. It could make combustion troubles such as coal clogging, spontaneous combustion, coal firing in the coal handling equipments, ash slag and clinker issues, etc. This paper covers combustion troubles, issues and countermeasures in the biggest coal fired power plant in Korea.

  • RDF(Refuse-Derived Fuel) is a fuel of pelletized form made of combustible solid wastes and can not only be used as alternative energy to fossil fuel but also solve troubles in thermal uses of incinerator. As the first stage for obtaining elementary data required to develop criteria of raw materials appropriate to RDF combustion facilities actively spread recently in Korea, preliminary experiments were conducted on CO, SOx, NOx and HCl production and reduction characteristics in combustion of RDF. RDF samples weighing 2~3 g per a sample were manufactured in a lab-scale way and combustion tests of RDF were carried out in electric furnace with quartz tube of 50 mm inside diameter.

  • Recently, the improvement of fuel economy and the reduction of exhaust smoke and NOx have been successfully achieved by supplying diesel engines with emulsified diesel oil with water particles. In the present paper, the difference between the combustion of injected emulsified fuel and that of diesel oil spray is clarified by means of taking high-speed and color photographs of the flames in the engine cylinder. As the results, the two kinds of fuels show different combustion behavior each other in the growth of initial flame and in the termination of combustion process in the cylinder. Then, suitable combustion chamber design for the use of emulsified fuel is discussed on the basis of experimental data for various distribution of spray in different kinds of piston cavities. Some methods of clearing troubles caused by emulsified fuel injection are also discussed on the basis of performance tests with a remodeling test engine.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillation is a significant problem in cylindrical-type combustors such as common internal combustion engines, industrial furnaces, gas turbine, etc. This kind of low frequency oscillation can give rise to serious troubles such as the destruction of system or producing of a strong noise. Accurate numerical simulation of thermoacoustic phenomena is a complex and challenging problem. Especially, considering the reaction of mixture intensifies the difficulty of analysis. Like as other simulations of the aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, direct computation of thermoacoustic phenomena requires that the Navier-Stokes equations be solved using accurate numerical differentiation and time-marching schemes, with non-reflecting boundary conditions. In this study,, numerical approach aims at qualitative analysis and efficient prediction of problem, not at the development of an accurate scheme. Overally speaking, numerical prediction is reasonably matched with experimental result.

  • Recently, global warming has been accelerated due to air pollution and air pollutants are coming from the exhaust of the ICE vehicles, which are gradually increasing in number globally. That is why all the countries in the world are striving to reduce pollutant emissions of automobiles by strengthening regulations on air pollution. To comply with the regulations, the auto industry came up with hybrid vehicles, which have features of both ICE vehicles and electric vehicles. Hybrid vehicles show improvements in emissions, fuel efficiency, as well as functions as electric vehicles. This study aims to show possible troubles that occur at times of damages in high-voltage systems, and to suggest responsive measures.

냉동기 팽창장치로서 인젝터 사용의 적합성에 관한 연구 (Study on the Adaptiveness of Using an Injector As an Expansion Device of Refrigerator)

  • Spray as a liquid atomization technique has wide applications of combustion, painting, chemical, medical and agricultural purpose, and so on. Capillary tubes and expansion valves, as an expansion device of vapor compression type refrigerators, has been used from the early time. But there are some problems in practice, the former can't control refrigerant flowrate exactly and the later most of imported are expensive relatively and has some difficulties to install. Choosing an injector as a new concept of expansion device of refrigerator in this study to improve such troubles of the coming expansion device, the refrigerant spray behavior and refrigeration characteristics are evaluated experimentally. It is verified that the injector with a good function of refrigerant atomization plays a desirable role of refrigerant expansion in the actual refrigeration cycle.

  • Recently, the population of vehicles using LPG as fuel has been increasing due to relatively low fuel price and low tax. Although gasoline engine oils we usually used to lubricate LPG engines, some troubles such as oil thickening and TBN depletion were found in them under severe operating condition. In order to investigate the deterioration mechanism of lubricants in LPG engine, field trials were performed. The results from the field trials showed that the deterioration of oils in LPG engine is different from that in normal gasoline engine. LPG engine oil was deteriorated mainly through oxidation and nitration at high temperature rather than contamination of fuel combustion products.

상용 소형 쑥뜸의 열역학적 특성에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study on the Thermodynamic Characteristics of Commercial Small-size Moxa Combustion)

  • Objective : Moxibustion has been proved efficacious for many diseases, but isn't widespread in the clinics due to a danger of skin burning, the smoke produced while burning a moxa combustion and so on. Therefore, another type of moxa that can be resolved these troubles is required. To improve the effect of moxibustion and develop the new thermal stimulating treatment, the performance of commercial moxibustion widely used are studied systematically and found out quantitatively. Methods : We have selected two types (small-size moxa A(sMA), small-size moxa B (sMB)) among small-size moxaes used widely in the clinic. We examined combustion time, various temperatures, temperature gradient in each period during a combustion of moxa. Results : 1. The combustion time in the preheating period appeared somewhat longer in sMA than in sMB. 2, The combustion time in the heating period appeared longer in sMA by 26% than in sMB. 3. The average temperature in the heating period was $37.6{\sim}37.8^{\circ}C\;in\;sMA\;and\;36.2{\sim}36.8^{\circ}C$ in sMB and the maximum temperature measured at a center of contact surface in sMA was $48.6^{\circ}C$, higher by over $2.8^{\circ}C$ than that of sMB moxibustion. 4. The average ascending temperature gradient in the heating period was $0.08{\sim}0.1^{\circ}C/sec$ in both moxaes, and the average ascending temperature gradient of heating period in sMB appeared larger. The maximum ascending temperature gradient appeared higher in sMB, and the time reaching maximum ascending temperature gradient appeared much earlier in sMA than in sMB. 5. The combustion time in the retaining period was around 100 sec in sMA and around 275 sec in sMB. 6. The average temperature in the retaining period was $42.2{\sim}46.0^{\circ}C\;in\;sMA\;and\;39.3{\sim}41.4^{\circ}C/sec$ in sMB. The minimum temperature in the retaining period was over $38.80^{\circ}C$ in sMA but just $34.7^{\circ}C$ in sMB. 7. The average descending temperature gradient in sMA was $-0.050{\sim}0.067^{\circ}C/sec$ and in sMB was $-0.030{\sim}0.037^{\circ}C/sec$ 8. The combustion time in the cooling period appeared longer over two times in sMA than in sMB, and the time which the cooling period (minimum temperature) finished at appeared later in sMB by 55 sec. 9. We classified the combustion process that the measured temperature rose over body heat($37^{\circ}C$) into the effective combustion period. The effective combustion time was 233.3 sec in sMA and 300.4 sec in sMB respectively, and was longer by about 29% in sMB. The average temperature and maximum temperature in the effective combustion time appeared higher in sMA. The time taken until the maximum temperature was reached was 225.1 sec in sMA and 244.5 sec in sMB, faster by about 20 sec in sMA. The maximum ascending temperature gradient during the effective combustion period appeared larger about 1.4 times in sMB, but the time when the maximum ascending temperature gradient happened was faster in sMA. Conclusion : It appears that sMB, compared with sMA, is proper if necessary to apply the long time and weak stimulus, because of the gentle stimulus during the relatively longer time. In contrast, sMA that the symmetrical combustion happened is proper if necessary to apply the short time and strong stimulus.

Engine 폐유 자원순환 기술에 관한 연구 (A study for cyclic Process technique of mineral base engine used oil resource)

  • A new process disregraded the H$_2$SO$_4$ treatment process heretofore in use, was developed and substituted for mineral base engine used oil of homemade SAE-30 grade H.V.I., which was used covering 4,500km, as samples, and the following results in research, was obtained. (1) A good quality of rerefinded base oil was obtained through roughly a course of developed processes of vacuum distillation process, solvent extraction process, neutralization treatment process and clay treatment process. (2) Through vacuum distillation process, the size of fine grains of insoluble colloid carbon that is, colloid carbon which was produced by burning of internal combustion engine oil and fuel, could be brought up and precipitated (3) The insoluble matters and admixtures could be easily dispersed and dissolved by mixing and extracting solvent disregarded the H$_2$SO$_4$ treatment process heretofore in use (4) waste matter heretofore called acid sludge in consequence of the process, did not appear at all. accordingly, the environmental pollution could be removed. (5) The troubles of corrosion to copper strip which was faults of the usual used oil refined products and peculiar offensive odor of the rerefined oil, could be solved through the neutralization process. (6) The yield of rerefined oil obtained through a course of processes was over 86 percent, and it is of practical use, not to speak of commercial value.

모형소각로의 촉매에 의한 배기가스 정화특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the pollutant reduction using catalyst in model furnace)

  • In proportion to the increase of industrial development, emission troubles were concerned as global issue. For these reasons, so many researchers and associated institutes effort to reduce pollution with new technology and various devices. As a kind of these methods, we used catalysts as a after-treatment system. At first, we made equipment of model furnace. And various catalysts were equipped at exhaust duct of combustion system, and excess air ratio(a), change cell numbers catalyst materials(Pt, Pd) were changed as experimental conditions. With these various condition, temperature. NOx, CO, HC, $CO_2$ and $O_2$ concentration were measured. As a result, NOx conversion increased with increasing of cell number in Pd catalyst. And Pt catalyst became 100% conversion at 200 and 300 cell. Also, Pt catalyst was better than Pd catalyst at a=1.5 in this condition. In addition, CO and HC concentrations were decreased at a = 1.5 with Pd catalyst.
