Large-amplitude, combustion-induced oscillations are observed in most systems involving continuous flow, such as aeroengine afterburners, gas boilers and rocket motors. Strong furnace vibration is typically characterized by the presence of well developed standing waves in the furnace, generating high pressure pulsation and causing structural vibration of the furnace walls. 320MW NG boilers have been experienced high vibration frequently since reconstruction works. Excessive furnace vibration was encountered when a burner air rate is suddenly reduced during load zone changed from 270MW to 300MW. An investigation showed that the primary cause of the vibration was induced by combustion low air flow rate. This paper describes phenomenon examination on strong furnace vibration due to the change of boiler operating conditions.

In supersonic propulsion system, the inlet buzz phenomenon in the subcritical operation arises large pressure oscillation, combustion instability, and thrust loss, etc. Inlet Buzz phenomenon and the spray injection/combustion are figured out by the unified unsteady numerical analysis. TAB(Taylor Analogy Breakup) model was applied. Acoustic mode of the entire engine was investigated by detail analysis of pressure fluctuation at each location of the engine.

In hybrid rocket combustion, the oxidizer swirl injection is frequently used to stabilize the combustion as the rotational velocity component affects the boundary layer flow. However, as the swirl strength increases, a problem arises where the combustion performance changes too much. Thus, this study attempts to control the low frequency instability while minimizing the change in combustion performance by adapting attenuated swirl injection with fuel insert used in reference [7]. To this end, a series of experimental tests were performed by varying swirl intensity and the location of the fuel insert. In the tests, the occurrence of combustion instability and combustion performance were closely monitored. The results confirmed that combustion instability was successfully suppressed at the condition of the swirl angle 6 degree and the location of fuel insert 310 mm. And, the changes in combustion pressure, O/F ratio, and fuel regression rate were found as minimal compared to the baseline case. Also the results reconfirmed that the formation of positive coupling between two high frequency oscillations in 500 Hz band, combustion pressure(p') and heat release oscillation(q'), is the necessary and sufficient condition of the occurrence of low frequency instability.

The effects of combustion instability on flow structure and flame dynamics with the inlet configurations in a model gas turbine combustor were investigated using large eddy simulation (LES). A G-equation flamelet model was employed to simulate the unsteady flame behaviors. As a result of mean flow field, the change of divergent half angle($\alpha$) at combustor inlet results in variations in the size and shape of the central toroidal recirculation (CTRZ) as well as the flame length by changing corner recirculation zone (CRZ). The case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ show smaller size and upstream location of CTRZ than those of $90^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ by the development of higher swirl velocity. The flame length in the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ is shorter than other cases, while the case of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ yields the longest flame length due to the decrease of effective reactive area with the absence of CRZ. Through the analysis of pressure fluctuation, it was identified that the case of ${\alpha}=45^{\circ}$ shows the largest damping effect of pressure oscillation in all configurations and brings in the noise reduction of 2.97dB, compared to that of ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ having the largest pressure oscillation. These reasons were discussed in detail through the analysis of unsteady phenomena related to recirculation zone and flame surface. Finally the effects of flame-acoustic interaction were evaluated using local Rayleigh parameter.

Generally, combustion instability is generated by the mutual coupling between the heat release and the acoustic pressure in the combustor. On the occasion, the acoustic pressure generates the oscillation of the mass flow rate of propellant injected from injector, and this oscillation again affects combustion in the combustor. So, the dynamic characteristics of the injector have been studied to control combustion instability using injector itself in Russia from 1970's. In order to study injector dynamics, a mechanical pulsator for forced pressure pulsation is produced and the method to quantify the mass flow rate of the propellant that is oscillating at the exit of the injector is developed. With the pulsator and the method, pulsating values of the mass flow rate, pressure, liquid film thickness, and axial velocity generated at the exit of the simplex swirl injector are measured in real time. And phase-amplitude characteristics of each parameter are analyzed using these pulsating values acquired at the exit of the simplex swirl injector.

Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.
Thermoacoustic oscillation is a significant problem in cylindrical-type combustors such as common internal combustion engines, industrial furnaces, gas turbine, etc. This kind of low frequency oscillation can lead to serious consequences such as destruction of the combustor and production of strong noise. The accurate numerical simulation of thermoacoustic phenomena is a complex and challenging problem, especially when considering the chemical reaction of mixtures. As with other simulations of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, the direct computation of thermoacoustic phenomena requires that Navier-Stokes equations be solved using accurate numerical differentiation and time-marching schemes, with non-reflecting boundary conditions. The numerical approach used here aims at qualitative analysis and efficient prediction of those problems, not at the development of an accurate scheme. The numerical prediction developed in this work is shown to be reasonably matched with experimental result.

A Experimental study on flame extinction behavior was investigated using He curtain flow with counter triple co-flow burner. Buoyancy force was suppressed up to a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ by using He curtain flow. The stability maps were provided with a functional dependency of diluent mole fraction and global strain rate to clarify the differences in flame extinction behavior. The flame extinction curves had C-shapes at various global strain rates. The oscillation and extinction modes were different each other in terms of the global strain rate, and the flames extinction modes could be classified into five modes such as (I) and (II): an extinction through the shrinkage of the outmost edge flame forward the flame center after self-excitation and without self-excitation, respectively, (III): an extinction through rapid advancement of a flame hole while the outmost edge flame is stationary, (IV): self-excitation occurs in the outermost edge flame and the center edge flame and then a donut shaped flame is formed and/or the flame is entirely extinguished, (V): shrinkage of the outermost edge flame without self-excitation followed by shrinkage or survival of the center flame. These oscillation and extinction modes could be identified well to the behavior of edge flame. The result also showed that the edge flame was influenced significantly by the conductive heat losses to the flame center or ambient He curtain flow.

Large Eddy Simulation(LES) has been conducted to insight interaction effects of turbulent flow and chemical reaction of a lean-Premixed swirl combustor. The unsteady turbulent flame is carefully simulated so that the motion of flow and flame can be characterized in detail. Fuel lumps escaping from the primary combustion zone move downstream and consequently produce local hot spots conveying large vortical structures in the azimuthal direction. The correlation between pressure oscillation and unsteady heat release is examined by the spatial and temporal Rayleigh parameter.

In this paper, the main cause on excitation of the combustion instability which may occur in the hybrid rocket motor with a diaphragm was studied. Hybrid rocket motor propulsion tests considering various experimental conditions such as with a diaphragm or not, a diameter of diaphragm, oxidizer mass flow rate, fuel length, etc were performed, and the combustion visualization for the inside of a hybrid rocket motor with a diaphragm was performed. With these experimental results, it was confirmed that the main cause of a large excitation was the hole-tone, and it was shown that the hole-tone model can be predicted experimental primary pressure oscillation frequency quite well.
