직접분사식 디젤기관의 화염 속에서 생성되는 그을음의 특성에 관한 연구 (A study on the characteristics of soots formation in spray flame for DI diesel engine)

  • To analyze a formation process of the soots in spray flame in the combustion chamber, an optically accessible DI Diesel engine was used for visualization. The images of the flames and soots were visualiaed with high speed camera by Schlieren method and Light extinction method. The spray flame and soot images on the films were analyzed at the various engine operating conditions. Soot distributed widely in spray flame and its concentration was about $100g/m^3$ at the position close by nozzle tip of spray flame region, however it decreased below $20g/m^3$ at the corner of combustion chamber due to soot oxidation.

확대관 흐름에 있어서 화염의 안정성 및 구조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Flame Structure and Stabilization in a Divergent Flow)

  • An experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergence flow. In this paper, stabilization characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergence angle of duct and position of a circular cylinder. The fuel used is a commercial grade gaseous propane injected by two slit of rod. It is found that the positive pressure gradient greatly influences the eddy structure behind the rod. and that two different kinds of combustion patterns exist at the blowoff limit depending on the divergent angle of duct. They are distinguished by their wake structures: one associated with Karman vortex shedding, the other without it. Also, the blowoff velocity in the former is found to be higher than in the later.

  • The transported probability density function model combined with the consistent finite volume (FV) method has been applied to simulate the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows. To realistically account for the non-isotropic turbulence effects on the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows, the present PDF transport approach is based on the joint velocity- turbulent frequency-composition PDF formulation. The evolution of the fluctuating velocity of a particle is modeled by a simplified Langevin equation and the particle turbulence frequency is represented by the modified Jayesh - Pope model. Effects of molecular diffusion are represented by the interaction by exchange with the mean (IEM) mixing model. To validate this hybrid FV/PDF transport model, the numerical results are compared with experimental data for the turbulent bluff-body reacting flows.

  • Flame structures and NOx formation characteristics in the flame lets of coflow and counterflow diffusion flame are numerically studied. Calculations were carried out twice with the $C_2-Full$ and $C_2-Thermal$ Mechanism for each flame. Mixture fractions and scalar dissipation rates are used as the parameters to compare the flame let structures and NOx formation characteristics quantitatively. It was found that there is a similarity in flame temperature and stable species profiles except radical profiles between two flamelets. And there are some differences in NOx concentration and production rates. These results imply that the flow effects must be considered in calculations for NOx formation of turbulent flames using Laminar Flamelet Model.

  • A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flame structure and combustion characteristics in the model gas turbine combustor changing equivalence ratio. For this purpose, temperature and ion current were measured and these data were analyzed by the PDF and power spectra technique. We found that the flame length is longer while increasing the equivalence ratio in experimental condition, and especially ${\psi}=0.19$, combustion reaction was active by the stable swirl flow. and these flames were governed by the random three dimensional eddy.

  • Activation energy asymptotics (AEA) for Linan#s diffusion-flame regime is revisited in this paper. The main purpose of the paper is to carefully re-examine each AEA analysis step in order to clarify the some concepts that are often misunderstood among the ordinary practitioners of the AEA. Particular attention is focused on the different AEA regimes arising from the double limit of large Zel#dovich and Damkohler numbers. In addition, the expansion procedures are shown in detail and the method that the turning point condition, commonly known as the Linan#s extinction condition, is found is explained.

Supersonic Combustion Studies for SCRamjet Engines

  • Experiments were performed in order to examine the stability of hydrocarbon-fueled flames in cavity flameholders in supersonic airflows. Methane and ethylene were burned in two different cavity configurations having aft walls ramped at 22.5 and 90$^{\circ}$. Air stagnation temperatures were 590 K at Mach 2 and 640 K at Mach 3. Lean blowout limits showed dependence on the air mass flowrates. Visual observations, planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) of nitric oxide (NO), and Schlieren imaging were used to investigate these phenomena. Large differences were noted between cavity floor and cavity ramp injection schemes. Cavity ramp injection provided better performance in most cases. Ethylene pilots have a wider range of stable operation than methane. Fuel flowrates at ignition showed similar trends as lean blowout limits, but higher flowrates were required.

  • Propagation characteristics of tribrachial flames have been studied numerically in a two-dimensional fuel/oxidizer mixing layer. A flame is initiated by imposing a high temperature ignition source. Subsequent propagation of a tribrachial flame is traced. The flow redirection effect at the leading edge of a tribrachial flame increases the propagation speed beyond the corresponding stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. The effect of mixture fraction gradient on the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame is analyzed in a mixing layer considering that mixture fraction gradient increases as a tribrachial flame propagates toward upstream. As the flame curvature at the leading edge increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient, the flow redirection effect becomes more pronounced on the flame propagation speed. As a result, the propagation speed of a tribrachial flame increases with decreasing mixture fraction gradient.

고압에서 DME-Air 혼합기의 화염속도 측정 (Measurement of Laminar Flame Speeds of Dimethyl Ether-Air Mixtures at High Pressure)

  • Spherically expanding flames are used to measure flame speeds, which are derived the corresponding laminar flame speeds at zero stretch. Dimethyl Ether-Air mixtures at high pressure are studied over an extensive range of equivalence ratios. The classical shadowgraph technique is used to detect the reaction zone. In analytical methodology the optimization process using least mean squares is performed to extract the laminar flame speeds. It is seen that the laminar flame speed of DME-Air mixture with the increase of pressure decreases rapidly showing a similar trend to other hydrocarbon fuels. At pressure of 2 and 10 atm the experimental data from the present study agree well with results reported in the literature. Especially the laminar flame speeds at 2 atm are in good agreement with those calculated in numerical work over the full stoichiometric range. At elevated pressure of 12 atm the measured data are slightly slower at fuel lean condition and show close agreement at fuel rich condition when compared with the numerical results.
