레이저 진단기법을 이용한 연소 가시화 기술 (Visualization of Combustion by Using Laser Diagnostic Techniques)

  • Several visualization techniques of laser diagnostics are presented for combustion phenomena, including Mie scattering for flow, Rayleigh and Raman scattering spectroscopy for major species, laser-induced fluorescence for minor species, and laser-induced incandescence for soot. These techniques have been applied to understand the various combustion phenomena more clearly, including buoyancy-dominant flow system, diffusion flam oscillation, laminar and turbulent lifted flames, flame propagation along a vortex ring, and soot zone characteristics. The usefulness of laser diagnostics on a better understanding of physical mechanism is demonstrated.

  • Diode laser absorption system is advantageous of their non-invasive nature, fast response time, high sensitivity and real-time measurement capability. Furthermore, recent advances in room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications are enabling combustion diagnostics system based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. So, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor system are now appearing for a variety of applications. The objective of this research is to take advantage of distributed feed-back diode laser and develope new gas sensing system. It experimentally found out that the wavelength, power characteristics as a function of injection current and temperature. In addition to direct absorption and wavelength modulation spectroscopy have been demonstrated in these experiments and have a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • To provide standard data of temperature and species concentration in a flame for calibrating the laser based combustion diagnostics, we investigated combustion characteristics of a flat flame burner(Mckennar Product). For various stoichiometric ratios we measured temperature and concentration of OH in the premixed methane/air flame with Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy and laser induced fluorescence technique, respectively. Assuming the chemical equilibrium condition at the measured temperature, the mole fraction of the OH radical in the flame was obtained and compared with numerical analysis.

  • 연소불안정 현상을 제거하거나 효과적으로 제어하기 위해서는 화염구조에 대한 이해가 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 OH 자발광 및 He-Ne 레이저 광흡수 계측기법을 이용하여 연소불안정과 화염 구조사이의 상관관계에 대한 실험적 연구를 다양한 실험조건에서 수행하였다. 실험에서는 673 K로 가열된 swirl 형태로 공급되는 건조한 공기와 LNG($CH_4$) 연료를 사용하였으며 전체 당량비는 1.2 조건에서 속도를 25 ~ 70 m/s까지 바꾸어가며 실험을 수행하였다. 이를 통하여 연소불안정 현상이 낮은 속도조건과 높은 속도조건에서 발생하는 것을 확인할 수 있었고, 낮은 속도조건의 불안정에서는 화염의 와동구조가 연소불안정현상에 영향을 끼친다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

가시화엔진을 이용한 연소 및 라디칼 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Combustion Visualizations and Radical Characteristics using Optically Accesible Engine)

  • A combustion flame visualization system, which is used as an engine diagnostics tool, was developed in order to understand the combustion reaction mechanism in the development stage for S.I. engines. The measurement system consists of an I-CCD camera and a computer-aided image processing system. By using optically accessible engine system, the flame structure was analyzed from the acquired graylevel image and the direction of flame propagation (shape of flame) has been measured to understand combustion phenomena. And combustion radical which involves combustion information were measured. As a result, strong relation between combustion radicals intensity ratio and air excess ratio was found.

  • Diode laser absorption sensors are advantageous because they may provide fast, sensitive, absolute, and selective measurements of species concentration. These systems are very attractive for practical applications owing to its compactness, resonable cost, robustness, and ease of use. In addition, diode lasers are fiber-optic compatible and thus enable simultaneous measurements of multiple species along a line-of-sight. Recent advances of room-temperature, near-IR and visible diode laser sources for telecommunication, optical data storage applications make it possible to be applied for combustion diagnostics based on diode laser absorption spectroscopy. Therefore, combined with fiber-optics and high sensitive detection strategies, compact and portable sensor systems are now appearing for variety of applications. The objectives of this research are to develope a new gas sensing system and to verify feasibility of this system. Wavelength and power characteristics as a function of injection current and temperature are experimentally found out. Direct absorption spectroscopy has been demonstrated in these experiments and has a bright prospect to this diode laser system.

  • We construct a mobile broadband coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy system to measure the temperature of combustion gases. To improve the accuracy of CARS temperatures due to Stokes lasers, a modeless dye laser is constructed. A monochromator to disperse CARS spectra is also constructed in the spectrometer for easy portability. The accuracy of CARS temperature, measured in graphite tube furnace in reference to a radiation pyrometer, is better than 2 % from 1000 K to 2400 K. The CARS temperature error due to the variation of the spectral distribution of the modeless laser is measured to be less than 1.5 % during five hours operation. As a demonstration of combustion diagnosis, we applied the spectrometer to measure the temperature distribution of the propane air premixed flame.

  • An optical single cylinder diesel engine equipped with a common-rail injection system has been built to investigate diesel combustion and emission characteristics. Three optical widows (piston crown quartz for bottom view of the cylinder, upper piston quartz for allowing laser sheet and liner quartz for side view) have been placed in the optical engine to visualize spray characteristics and combustion process inside the cylinder. Before doing further research using various optical diagnostics with the optical engine, fundamental combustion experiments and flame visualization incorporating a high speed motion analyser have been carried out with a wide range of engine operating conditions.
