Natural gas is an attractive fuel in view of environment benefits due to its flow carbon-to-hydrogen ratio. However, its compositions and properties are varied depending upon production regional groups. Therefore, study on the combustion characteristics of natural gas engines with a variety of compositions has been demanded for the efficient application of gas engines. This study aims to investigate the effects of gas composition on engine combustion characteristics. It was found that , by controlling an engine with fixed fuel nozzle area, power and heat release were subject to Wobbe Index. And at fixed excess air ratios, power and heat release were subject to low heating value of unit mixture . In addition, in case of constant nozzle area, combustion duration was found to be inversely proportional to CP(Combustion Potential), and the condition of fixed excess air ratios showed no change in combustion duration, regardless of CP.
The present work is an experimental investigation on potential operating range using directly injected gasoline fuel in a single-cylinder compression ignition (CI) engine. The objectives of present study were to apply auto-ignited combustion to gasoline fuel and to evaluate potential operating range. In order to auto-ignite gasoline fuel in CI engine, the fuel direct-injection system and the intake air system were modified that a flow rate and temperature of intake air were regulated. The heat-release rate (HRR), net indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), start of combustion (SOC), and combustion duration were derived from in-cylinder pressure data in a test engine, which has 373.33cc displacement volume and 17.8 compression ratio. The exhaust emission characteristics were obtained emission gas analyzer and smoke meter on the exhaust line system.

Fundamental combustion characteristics, such as the combustion potential, burning velocity and flame stability, for the practical utilization of LFG(Landfill gas) and LFG-blended fuels were experimentally investigated. The combustion potentials(CP) of LFG-blended fuels calculated from the previously suggested formulae were compared with burning velocities obtained by present experiments. The results showed that the previous formulae fur CP of LFG-blended fuels were not agreed with the experimental burning velocity, and these formulae should be revised. To provide an useful information needed to design the combustion devices, a triangular diagram was suggested for the maximum burning velocity of the mixture of CH$_4$, LPG and LFG. From the investigation of the burning velocity and the flame stability in a practical combustor, it was noted that the LFG-blended fuels, of which heating values or Wobbe indices were adjusted to that of natural gas, could be used as an alternative fuel of natural gas.

The main objectives of this study were to identify from literature review the potential sources and to provide a preliminary national emission inventory for the unintentionally produced polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (i.e., by - product PCBs). In Korea, fuel combustion, waste combustion, thermal industrial processes, and transportation were identified as potential sources of by -product PCB s. According to the availability of the emission factors and/or activity data, emission inventory could be assessed only for fuel combustion, waste combustion, steel industry, non-ferrous industry, and non-metallurgical industry. The total national emission of by-product PCBs was estimated to be 1087kg for the year 2000. The preliminary estimation further indicated that the steel manufacturing was the single dominant emission category, contributing 93% to the total emission. Of the steel manufacturing processes, the contribution of the electric arc furnace was about 80% of the total emission. Due to high uncertainty associated with both the emission factors and activity statistics, the emission estimates in this study are likely to contain significant errors. However, the results of the present work could serve the first step toward future efforts to establish national source and emission inventories of by-product PCBs.

A new combustion strategy called LIFC(Late Injection & Fast Combustion) was developed for simultaneous reduction of particulate matter(PM) and nitrogen oxides(NOx) in exhaust emission of diesel engines, In this study, effects of injection timing and injection pressure under relatively high EGR rate were investigated. The experiments were conducted in a conventional engine over a range of commercial engine speed. The test engine could be operated in LIFC up to 2000rpm / bmep 5 bar condition with significant reduction of NOx and PM. The experimental results showed potential for the mechanism of the simultaneous reduction of NOx and PM from HSDI diesel engines.

As an alternative fuel producing less exhaust emissions, natural gas is of interest for use both in SI and CI engines. The potential of natural gas fuelled dual-fuel engine is considered high enough. However, much effort has to be made so that gaseous fuel is used efficiently with simultaneous minimum use of pilot oil. Hence, a simplified three-dimensional model, using a finite volume method in cylindrical coordinates, has been developed to facilitate an understanding of the dual-fuel combustion phenomena and to predict the complex interactions between the pilot distillate and natural gas. The computer model was calibrated by comparing it with the experimental results obtained from diesel engine like combustion bomb tests. In the pre-mixed natural gas combustion, the fuel burning was highly reliant on the injection condition and subsequent burning nature of the pilot distillate.
Unsteady Shock-Induced Combustion has been studied for the past few decades since it is considered as one of the potential ways to reach supersonic flights. Experimental observations of Unsteady SIC were observed as early as 1960's. But Lehr was the first to report in detail the mechanisms of Shock-Induced Combustion experimentally. Numerical Studies on SIC were helpful in explaining the insight into the oscillatory behaviour in the mid 90's to early 2000's. Detailed reaction mechanisms is required to prediction the SIC flowfield more in detail. However at that time, very few reaction mechanisms on hydrogen-oxidation were reported. In the last decade, various number of hydrogen reaction mechanisms were reported. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the effect of various reaction mechanisms in an unsteady mode of Shock-Induced Combustion.
Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.
Stratified charge has been thought as one of the ways to avoid a sharp pressure rise on HCCI combustion. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR on HCCI combustion. The pre-mixture with thermal, mixing and EGR stratifications is charged in Rapid Compression Machine. After that, the pre-mixture is compressed and in that process, in-cylinder gas pressure and temperature are analyzed. Additionally numerical calculation with multi-zones modeling is run to know the potential of stratified charge for reducing PRR.
The energy crisis involving depletion of fossil fuel resource is not the sole driving force for developing renewable energy technologies. Another driving force is the ever increasing concerns on the air quality of our planet, associated with the continuous and dramatic increase of the concentration of greenhouse gas (mainly carbon dioxide) emissions. The internal combustion engine is a major source of distributed $CO_2$ emissions caused by combustion of gasoline derived largely from fossil fuel. Another major source of $CO_2$ is the combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity. New technologies for generating electricity from sources that do not emit $CO_2$, such as water, solar, wind, and nuclear, together with the advent of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and even all-electric vehicles (EVs), offer the potential of alleviating our present problem. Therefore, the relevant technologies in $LiFePO_4$ as cathode material for Li-ion batteries suitable to the friendly environment are reviewed aim to provide the vital information about the growing field for energies to minimize the potential environmental risks.
