  • Orthogonal freqency division multiplexing (OFDM) is an attractive technique for achieving high-bit-rate wireless data transmission. However, the potentially large peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) has limited its application; An OFDM signal with the large PAPR can cause power degradation (In-band distortion) and spectral spreading (Out-of-band distortion) by being clipped passing through a power amplifier. Thus, we propose the combining algorithm of Hadamard transform and phase shift, which is ascribed to the relation between the correlation of the IFFT input sequence function and PAPR. Extensive computer simulations show that the combining algorithm is an effective technique to reduce PAPR.

  • A modified setup of a CMD technique for high power coherent beam combining was presented to address an issue of low damage threshold of electro-optic modulators. The feasibility of the modified setup was demonstrated by combining eight fiber beams, and it was successfully performed with ${\lambda}/44$ of residual phase error and 100 Hz of control bandwidth. It is expected that the modified CMD setup facilitates ultra-high power coherent beam combination without a limitation caused by the low damage threshold of electro-optic modulators.

  • This paper provides new exact-closed form expressions for average SER and average BER as well as outage probability for M-PSK signaling with selection combining over independent but non-identically distributed Rayleigh fading paths. The validity of these expressions is verified by the Monte-Carlo simulations. All of numerical results are in excellent agreement with simulation results.

  • In this paper, a bit-mapping scheme is proposed for partial Chase combining in LDPC-coded systems. Contrary to the previously known bit mapping that assigns the information bits to more reliable channels, the proposed mapping assigns the codeword bits of irregular LDPC codes to distinct Gaussian channels by considering the characteristics of LDPC codes and channels. The recursion equation for partial Chase combining is derived by using the density evolution technique, based on it, the best bit mapping among the various bit-mapping schemes is derived, and the validity of them is confirmed through simulation.

  • Since space time block code (STBC) technique of a transmission diversity technique was introduced, multiple input multiple output techniques using transmission diversity at the basestation for improving transmission data rate, have been studied extensively. Multiplexed STBC OFDM technique uses multiple groups of two transmit antennas and suppresses the interference signals of other STBC OFDM groups at the receivers. In this paper, I propose a new method of iterative decoding and maximal ratio receive combining technique for multiplexed STBC OFDM systems, and simulated and showed the results in comparison with the conventional methods.

  • This paper proposes a low power transmission technique for single-carrier modulation with frequency domain equalization. As time domain signals and frequency domain signals have unique corresponding functions, inserting zeros after each symbol causes a repetition in other domain, so maximal ratio combining technique using repetitive transmission can be applied in the frequency domain. In this paper, we configure transmit signals to insert zeros after each symbols for single-carrier modulation with frequency domain equalization and maximal ratio receive combining block in the receiver structures, propose a structure for transmitter and receiver and show that its performance is better than the traditional algorithm by simulations.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of the sedation technique for implant surgery by combining the use of inhalation of nitrous oxide/oxygen with intravenous midazolam. Methods: Patients requiring surgery for the placement of dental implants were randomly allocated to two groups receiving intravenous midazolam or a combined technique using nitrous oxide/oxide and intravenous midazolam. Safety parameters, cooperation scores, anxiety scales, total amount of midazolam administered and recovery time were recorded and compared. Results: There were a statistically significant reduction in the amount of midazolam required to achieve optimal sedation (P<0.01), an overall significant reduction in recovery time (P<0.01), a significant reduction in anxiety scales (P<0.05), and a significant improvement in cooperation (P<0.05) and peripheral oxygen saturation (P<0.05) when a combined technique of inhalational $N_2O/O_2$ and midazolam was used. Conclusions: For implant surgery, this combining sedation technique could be safe and reliable, demonstrating reduction of total dose of midazolam and level of patient's anxiety and improvement in patient's recovery and cooperation.

  • A simple modification of well known Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is proposed to exploit cooperative diversity. Instead of selecting a single cluster-head, we propose M cluster-heads in each cluster to obtain a diversity of order M. The cluster-heads gather data from all the sensor nodes within the cluster using same technique as LEACH. Cluster-heads transmit gathered data cooperatively towards the destination or higher order cluster-head. We propose a code combining based cooperative diversity protocol which is similar to coded cooperation that maximizes the performance of the proposed cooperative LEACH protocol. The implementation of the proposed cooperative strategy is analyzed. We develop the upper bounds on bit error rate (BER) and frame error rate (FER) for our proposal. Space time block codes (STBC) are also a suitable candidate for our proposal. In this paper, we argue that the STBC performs worse than the code combining cooperation.

  • In this paper, we provide the performance analyses of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward(AF) relay transmission composed of asymmetric radio-frequence(RF) and free-space optical(FSO) links. In the mixed RF/FSO system, a relay is equipped with two receive antennas for RF signals and one additional transmit antenna for FSO signals. In order to improve a performance of RF link, a switch-and-stay (SSC) diversity technique is applied at the relay which can provide a proper link performance with a low complexity. Specifically, we offer the performance analyses of the proposed system in terms of outage probability and secrecy outage probability. In numerical examples, we compare the system performances with no diversity and selection combining systems and verify our analytical results via computer-based Monte-Carlo simulations.
