  • This paper investigates the description ability of chaotic feature vector to dynamic textures. First a chaotic feature and other features are calculated from each pixel intensity series. Then these features are combined to a chaotic feature vector. Therefore a video is modeled as a feature vector matrix. Next by the aid of bag of words framework, we explore the representation ability of the proposed chaotic feature vector. Finally we investigate recognition rate between different combinations of chaotic features. Experimental results show the merit of chaotic feature vector for pixel intensity series representation.

  • In this paper, we studied the use of the foreground and background features and SVM classifier to improve the accuracy of offline handwritten numeral recognition. The foreground features are two directional features: directional gradient feature by Kirsch operators and directional stroke feature by local shrinking and expanding operations, and the background feature is concavity feature which is extracted from the convex hull of the numeral, where the concavity feature functions as complement to the directional features. During classification of the numeral, these three features are combined to obtain good discrimination power. The efficiency of our scheme is tested by recognition experiments on the handwritten numeral database CENPARMI, where SVM classifier with RBF kernel is used. The experimental results show the usefulness of our scheme and recognition rate of 99.10% is achieved.

  • In this paper we proposed multi-directional matching windows combined by multi-dimensional feature vector matching, which uses not only intensity values but also multiple feature values, such as variance, first and second derivative of pixels. Multi-dimensional feature vector matching has the advantage of compensating the drawbacks of area-based stereo matching using one feature value, such as intensity. We define matching cost of a pixel by the minimum value among eight multi-dimensional feature vector distances of the pixels expanded in eight directions having the interval of 45 degrees. As best stereo matches, we determine the two points with the minimum matching cost within the disparity range. In the experiment we used aerial imagery and IKONOS satellite imagery and obtained more accurate matching results than that of conventional matching method.

  • In this paper, we propose efficient content-based image retrieval methods using the automatic extraction of the low-level visual features as image content. Two new feature extraction methods are presented. The first one os an advanced color feature extraction derived from the modification of Stricker's method. The second one is a texture feature extraction using some DCT coefficients which represent some dominant directions and gray level variations of the image. In the experiment with an image database of 200 natural images, the proposed methods show higher performance than other methods. They can be combined into an efficient hierarchical retrieval method.

  • In order to solve the problems of the existing audio fingerprint method when extracting audio fingerprints from long speech segments, such as too large fingerprint dimension, poor robustness, and low retrieval accuracy and efficiency, a robust audio fingerprint retrieval method based on feature dimension reduction and feature combination is proposed. Firstly, the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and linear prediction cepstrum coefficient (LPCC) of the original speech are extracted respectively, and the MFCC feature matrix and LPCC feature matrix are combined. Secondly, the feature dimension reduction method based on information entropy is used for column dimension reduction, and the feature matrix after dimension reduction is used for row dimension reduction based on energy feature dimension reduction method. Finally, the audio fingerprint is constructed by using the feature combination matrix after dimension reduction. When speech's user retrieval, the normalized Hamming distance algorithm is used for matching retrieval. Experiment results show that the proposed method has smaller audio fingerprint dimension and better robustness for long speech segments, and has higher retrieval efficiency while maintaining a higher recall rate and precision rate.

  • Off-line handwritten numeral recognition is a very difficult task and hard to achieve high recognition results using a single feature and a single classifier, since handwritten numerals contain many pattern variations which mostly depend upon individual writing styles. In this paper, we propose handwritten numeral recognition system using hybrid features and combined classifier. To improve recognition rate, we select mutually helpful features -directional features, crossing point feature and mesh features- and make throe new hybrid feature sets by using these features. These hybrid feature sets hold the local and global characteristics of input numeral images. And we implement combined classifier by combining three neural network classifiers to achieve high recognition rate, where fuzzy integral is used for multiple network fusion. In order to verify the performance of the proposed recognition system, experiments with the unconstrained handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, Canada were performed. As a result, our method has produced 97.85% of the recognition rate.

  • In this paper we propose an effective feature compensation scheme based on the speech model in order to achieve robust speech recognition. The proposed feature compensation method is based on parallel combined mixture model (PCMM). The previous PCMM works require a highly sophisticated procedure for estimation of the combined mixture model in order to reflect the time-varying noisy conditions at every utterance. The proposed schemes can cope with the time-varying background noise by employing the interpolation method of the multiple mixture models. We apply the‘data-driven’method to PCMM tot move reliable model combination and introduce a frame-synched version for estimation of environments posteriori. In order to reduce the computational complexity due to multiple models, we propose a technique for mixture sharing. The statistically similar Gaussian components are selected and the smoothed versions are generated for sharing. The performance is examined over Aurora 2.0 and speech corpus recorded while car-driving. The experimental results indicate that the proposed schemes are effective in realizing robust speech recognition and reducing the computational complexities under both simulated environments and real-life conditions.

  • An approach to identify Chinese event types is proposed in this paper which combines a good feature selection policy and a Maximum Entropy (ME) model. The approach not only effectively alleviates the problem that classifier performs poorly on the small and difficult types, but improve overall performance. Experiments on the ACE2005 corpus show that performance is satisfying with the 83.5% macro - average F measure. The main characters and ideas of the approach are: (1) Optimal feature set is built for each type according to local feature selection, which fully ensures the performance of each type. (2) Positive and negative features are explicitly discriminated and combined by using one - sided metrics, which makes use of both features' advantages. (3) Wrapper methods are used to search new features and evaluate the various feature subsets to obtain the optimal feature subset.

  • Physical and mental changes caused by emotions can affect various behaviors, such as driving or learning behavior. Therefore, recognizing these emotions is a very important task because it can be used in various industries, such as recognizing and controlling dangerous emotions while driving. In this paper, we attempted to solve the emotion recognition task by implementing a multimodal model that recognizes emotions using both audio and video data from different domains. After extracting voice from video data using RAVDESS data, features of voice data are extracted through a model using 2D-CNN. In addition, the video data features are extracted using a slowfast feature extractor. And the information contained in the audio and video data, which have different domains, are combined into one feature that contains all the information. Afterwards, emotion recognition is performed using the combined features. Lastly, we evaluate the conventional methods that how to combine results from models and how to vote two model's results and a method of unifying the domain through feature extraction, then combining the features and performing classification using a classifier.

  • In this paper, we propose a stereo vision system to solve correspondence problem with large disparity and sudden change in environment which result from small distance between camera and working objects. First of all, a specific feature is divided by predfined elementary feature. And then these are combined to obtain coded data for solving correspondence problem. We use Neural Network to extract elementary features from specific feature and to have adaptability to noise and some change of the shape. Fourier transformation and Log-polar mapping are used for obtaining appropriate Neural Network input data which has a shift, scale, and rotation invariability. Finally, we use associative memory to obtain coded data of the specific feature from the combination of elementary features. In spite of specific feature with some variation in shapes, we could obtain satisfactory 3-dimensional data from corresponded codes.
