A pilot scale coagulation system, which has a function of physicochemical treatment, was developed to treat Combined sewer overflows(CSOs). This coagulation system requires evaluation of optimum design factors whether it has reflected those of lab scale system, moreover, the pilot scale system can be evaluated differently according to the characteristics of influent CSOs even though it has reflected lab scale's design factors. We conducted an experiment using lab scale system that could treat $1m^3$ of CSOs in a day, and also pilot-scale system with $100m^3/day$ CSOs flowed into the Cheongju sewage treatment plant. Therefore the aim of this study is to evaluate a hydraulic similarity between the design factors of pilot scale and those of lab scale coagulation system, and to evaluate feasibility of the coagulation system for the CSOs treatment with optimum operation conditions. From the result of pilot-test, we drew the optimum operation factors of in line mixer and flocculator having similarities with those of lab scale system as well as the optimum coagulant dose. Finally we confirmed that the coagulation system has feasibility to treat the CSOs with high removal efficiency.

Recent developments recommend the use of SSS to prevent combined sewer overflows and reduce excessive pollutant deposition in the receiving waters; however, other studies also suggest that SSS have minimal or no advantage over CSS in terms of reducing the pollutant loads being discharged in natural waterways. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of employing SSS in improving the water quality of the rivers in Okcheon-gun, South Korea. The former combined sewer outfalls (CSOs) were monitored to determine the presence of illicit connections or leaks in the newly-established SSS. Dry and wet-day monitoring was conducted alongside the collection of water samples on 14 points along the reach of the rivers and four former CSOs to determine water quality changes and patterns of pollutant loading. Among the 34 former CSOs in the study area, eight former CSOs exhibited dry-day discharges, implying the possibility of having illicit connections, leaks, or illegal wastewater discharge in the system. Moreover, relatively high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations, ranging from 4.8 mg/L to 24.9 mg/L and 6.4 mg/L to 10.1 mg/L, respectively were observed on three out of the four monitored CSOs. Fluctuations in the pollutant concentrations in the different monitored points along the river was also observed due to the presence of pipes discharging polluted water. Ultimately, further studies are necessary to identify the sources of dry-day discharges in the CSOs to successfully improve the water quality of the rivers in the area.
Sewage separation which often involves installing a new pipe to separate wastewater flow from stormwater runoff flow can be costly and depends highly on its feasibility in a site. To be able to develop a potentially more economical alternative that can also lessen major road traffic disturbance during this process, a different approach where a smaller sewage separator pipe is installed inside an existing combined sewer pipe was investigated. A small-scale of a box sewer and the proposed sewage separator pipe was constructed in the laboratory to observe and compare the deposition of solids and other solid-associated major pollutants at different flow rates. In addition, three-dimensional flow simulations considering five different scenarios were conducted using Ansys Fluent to observe the effect of the proposed sewage separator pipe to the hydraulic flow if installed inside the combined sewer pipe. Results revealed that the deposition of TSS, TCOD, TN, and TP were reduced by at least 60% when the wastewater was conveyed by the sewage separator pipe instead of the combined sewer pipe. Moreover, the flow simulations conducted showed that there was little to no major disturbance in hydraulic flow and velocity distribution when the sewage separator was installed inside a straight pipe and even at pipe transitions such as intersections, turns, and drop in elevation. Considering the pipe dimensions and the results of the study, the proposed approach can be promising in terms of reduction in pollutant deposition without a major effect on the hydraulic flow. Further investigation and cost-analysis should be done in the future to support these preliminary findings and help alleviate the problems caused by combined sewer overflows by introducing an alternative approach.

This study investigated the discharge characteristics of combined sewer overflows(CSOs) at a small watershed located in the Ojeong-cheon area of the Daejeon-cheon, Daejeon City. The long-term variations of discharges, water quality, and SS loads from 2001 to 2004 were simulated using SWMM. The simulation results indicated that suspended solid(SS) loads during the rainy seasons(July${\sim}$August) were highest throughout the whole year, but not substantially higher than those during the dry seasons. This result is due to the fact that contaminants do not buildup significantly because of frequent rainfall events during the wet seasons. It was estimated that about 9.3% of SS was discharged to the receiving body the during dry seasons while 90.7% during the rainy seasons. Further analysis showed that during the wet seasons SS loads discharged at the site as CSOs and at the wastewater treatment plant without treatment were 38% and 62%, respectively.
This paper presents a systematic approach for the economical design of stormwater quality control systems. For the design of runoff quality control system (RQCS), the rainfall-runoff process requires the local rainfall data recorded continuously. In this study the rainfall probability distribution is assumed to follow an exponential decay function. Applying the exponential decay function, the normalized curves are derived to explain the non-exceedance probability distributions. The optimal curves for the determination of the RQCS size are derived based on the overflow risk. Comparison of the optimal capture volume and peak runoff rate to those computed by an urban rainfall-runoff model(ILLUDAS) demonstrates that the optimal CSOs(Combined Sewer Overflows) curves derived in this study can be utilized for the design of stormwater quality control systems in Korea avoiding an excessive computational effort based on over flow risks.
It is widely known that untreated Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) that directly discharged from receiving water have a negative impact. Recent concerns on the CSO problem have produced several large scale constructions of treatment facilities, but the facilities are normally designed under empirical design criteria. In this study, several criteria for defining CSOs (e.g. determination of effective rainfall, sampling time, minimum duration of data used for rainfall-runoff simulation and so on) were investigated. Then this study suggested a standard methodology for the CSO calculation and support formalized standard on the design criteria for CSO facilities. Criteria decided for an effective rainfall was over 0.5 mm of total rainfall depth and at least 4 hours should be exist between two different events. An Antecedent dry weather period prior to storm event to satisfy the effective rainfall criteria was over 3 days. Sampling time for the rainfall-runoff model simulation was suggested as 1 hour. A duration of long-term simulation CSO overflow and frequency calculation should be at least recent 10 year data. A Management plan for the CSOs should be established under a phase-in of the plan. That should reflect site-specific conditions of different catchments, and formalized criteria for defining CSOs should be used to examine the management plans.

Appropriate removal of pollutants from combined sewer overflows(CSOs) and stormwater runoff is of primary concern to watershed managers trying to meet water quality standards even under a wet weather condition. Harmful substances associated with particles besides TSS and BOD are subjected to removal prior to discharge into the natural waters. Effectiveness of five major hydrodynamic separation technologies, Vortechs, Downstream Defender including Storm King for CSOs control, CDS, Stormceptor, and IHS, were evaluated in this study. There is not sufficient information for accurate evaluation of the removal efficiency for the pollutants from the stormwater runoff and CSOs. Based upon limited engineering data, however, all technologies were found to be effective in separation of heavy particles and floating solids. Technologies utilizing screens seem to have advantage in the treatment capacity than the other technologies relied fully on hydrodynamic behavior. The IHS system seems to have a strong potential in application for control of CSOs because of unique hydrodynamic behavior as well as a flexibility in opening size of the screens. Size of the particulate matter in the CSOs and stormwater runoff is found to be the most important parameter in selection of the type of the hydrodynamic separators. There exists an upper limit in the solids removal efficiency of a hydrodynamic separator, which is strongly dependent upon the particle size distribution of the CSOs and stormwater runoff.

Urban sewer systems has a limitation of capacity of rainwater storage and problem of occurrence of untreated sewage, so adopting a storage facility for sewer flooding prevention and urban non-point pollution reduction has a big attention. The Korea Ministry of Environment has recently introduced a new concept of "multi-functional storage facility", which is crucial not only in preventive stormwater management but also in dealing with combined sewer overflow and sanitary sewer discharge, and also has been promoting its adoption. However, reserving a space for a single large-scale storage facility might be difficult especially in urban areas. Thus, decentralized construction of small- and midium-sized storage facilities and its operation have been introduced as an alternative way. In this paper, we propose a model predictive control scheme for an optimized operation of distributed storage facilities and sewer networks. To this aim, we first describe the mathematical model of each component of networks system which enables us to analyze its detailed dynamic behavior. Second, overflow locations and volumes will be predicted based on the developed network model with data on the external inflow occurred at specific locations of the network. MPC scheme based on the introduced particle swarm optimization technique then produces the optimized the gate setting for sewer network flow control, which minimizes sewer flooding and maximizes the potential storage capacity. Finally, the operational efficacy of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by simulation study with virtual rainstorm event.
As urbanization and impermeable areas have increased, stormwater and non-point pollutants entering the stream have increased. Additionally, in the case of the old town comprising a combined sewer pipe system, there is a problem of stream water pollution caused by the combined sewer overflow. To resolve this problem, many cities globally are pursuing an environmentally friendly low impact development strategy that can infiltrate, evaporate, and store rainwater. This study analyzed the expected effects and efficiency when the LID facility was installed as a measure to improve hydrologic cycle and water quality in the Oncheon stream in Busan. The EPA-SWMM, previously calibrated for hydrological and water quality parameters, was used, and standard parameters of the LID facilities supported by the EPA-SWMM were set. Benchmarking the green infrastructure plan in New York City, USA, has created various installation scenarios for the LID facilities in the Oncheon stream drainage area. The installation and maintenance cost of the LID facility for scenarios were estimated, and the effect of each LID facility was analyzed through a long-term EPA-SWMM simulation. Among the applied LID facilities, the infiltration trench showed the best effect, and the bio-retention cell and permeable pavement system followed. Conversely, in terms of cost-efficiency, the permeable pavement systems showed the best efficiency, followed by the infiltration trenches and bio-retention cells.

This aim of study was to investigate the characteristics of discharge of pollutants as well as the correlation between flow rate and water quality constituents in a combined sewer system according to the characteristics of rainfall. For the loading rates for each pollutant, the median concentrations of all pollutants except T-N was increased when a CSO took place. The loading rates of BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn at the CSOs were 328-1255, 25-129, 83-2009, 4-12, 14-51, 5-11 and 5-13 times higher than the DWF (Dry Whether Flow), respectively. Especially, SS loading rate was found to be highest in all pollutants. On the other hand, the range of the first flush coefficient, b for water quality constituents such as BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn were 0.537-0.878, 0.589-0.888, 0.516-1.062, 0.852-1.031, 0.649-0.954, 0.975-1.015 and 0.900-1.114, respectively. In term of correlation between flow rate and pollutant concentrations, SS concentration was highly correlated to flow rate. However, there was an inverse correlation between EC (Electrical Conductivity) and flow rate because of the high dilution of flow rate. In case of correlation between pollutants, there was a high correlation between SS and T-P.
