A histochemical and ultrastructural study on the epithelia of some selected digestive tracks such as esophagus, crop, intestine of a land snail N. samarangae was carried out during the period of June 1997 to may 1998. The epithelium of digestive tract are simple columnar epithelium and consisted of five types of columnar cells. Type 1 cell which is majority in number has a brush border with microvilli on the free surface of the cell and contains numerous secretory granules supposed to be neutral mucopolysaccharide. Type 2 cell, elongated conical in shape, is rarely found in the epithelium. This cell also has a brush border with microvilli on its free surface and contains well developed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and secretory granules in various electron densities. This cell seems to produce both of acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides. Type 3 cell, which is morphologically similar to the Type 1 cell, has microvilli and cilia on the free surface and exists in group only in the limited regions of the intestine. Type 4 cell, typical goblet cell containing secretory granules in high electron density. Type 5 cell rarely found in the digestive tract. This cell contain inconspicuous materials.
A studv on the ultrastructural changes of the hermaprodite duct epithelium in spring and summer specimens of a Korean slug Incirovia fruhstorferi was conducted. In spring specimen, the hermaphrodite duct was 0.3 H 0.2 mm in diameter and seemed to be a little bit abnormal feature, due to shrinkage. The epithelium of the duct was composed of cells containing various-sized vacuoles and their cytoplasm showed high electron density. In summer specimen, the hermaphrodite duct was 0.4 $\times$ 0.23 mm in diameter and seemed to be more voluminous than that of the spring specimen. The lumen of the duct in the summer specimen was lined by a epithelium composed of several cell types such as ciliated cuboidal, pseudostratified cuboidal, ciliated columnar and irregular cells. Phasocvtotic activities of the duct epithelium are observed only in the summer specimen. Both of the duct epithelia in the spring and summer specimens were surrounded by connective tissues at their bases. The results obtained suggest that the duct epithelia of the slugs experience seasonal variation in relation to their reproductive cycles.
The migut epitheluim of the last instar larva in the mosquito larvae, Anopheles sinensis was observed with electron microscopes. The midgut epitheluim of the mosquito larva is composed of a single-layered columnar absorptive cells, regenerative cells and secretory granular cells. The free surface of the columnar absorptive cells has a regular array of microvilli 'brush border', while cell membranes close to the basal lamina are extrmely infolded and a lot of mitochondria are concentrated in those processes. The columnar absorptive cells also contain cell organelles expected to be found in absorptive cell. Midgut regenerative cells which are positioned basally in the epithelium form the groups, which are called 'nidi', composed of 1 or $2{\sim}3$ cells, they show darker appearance than the columnar absoptive cells. The secretory granular cells contain numerous electron dense granules, $200{\sim}400$ nm in diameter. The cone shaped secretory granular cells are located in the basal portion of the midgut epitheluim. The epithelium is surrounded by the subepithelial space and muscle bundles. The subepithelial space, which is filled with fibrous connective tissue, is innervated by many axon cells and tracheoles.
The present investigation was focussed on histochemical and electron microscopical observations of utero-vaginal(U-V) glands in U-V junctions of domestic hens. In histochemical observations, fine granules by PAS technique for mucopolysaccharides and nile blue stain for acidic lipids were slightly stained on the cytoplasm of U-V glandular epithelium. Larger granules by Sudan black B stain for neutral fat and phospholipids and Sudan III stain for neutral fat were heavily stained on the perinuclear region of the U-V gland epithelial cells. These positive materials were heavily stained on the U-V glandular epithelium of lowfecundity hens and non-laying hens. In scanning electron microscopic findings of the U-V junction surface, the orifices of U-V glands are seen as the crater-like invagination. The neck of the U-V gland and the epithelium of U-V iunction were covered by ciliated epithelial cells. Aggregates of spermatozoa are observed often to be on the necks of the U-V gland. These spermatozoa heads are embedded in the glandular tubules and many spermatozoa tails are free on the epithelium of uterine surface. In transmission electron microscopic findings, the epithelial cells of the U-V glandular orifices were ciliated, columnar cells. The apical regions of these cells contained numerous electrondense, round secretory granules of uniformly size. The epithelial cells of the U-V glandular tubule were columnar or pyramid shape with round or oval nuclei. These epithelial cells have numerous microvilli and also contained electron-dense, round secretary granules of uniformly size and electron-lucent vesicles of various size. Spermatozoa are seen as the cross-sections of various regions of heads and tails in glandular tubules. Also spermatozoa arranged longitudinally parallel within the glandular tubules.
This study was conducted for the histological observation of the infundibulum of the oviduct of the laying Korean native pheasants. The results are as follows : 1. The infundibular wall is composed of the epithelium, lamina propria, muscle layer(inner circular and outer longitudinal muscle), and serosa. The funnel lip is divided into the inner, and outer lip of the epithelium and muscle layer. 2. The epithelium of the funnel lip and most region of the cranial part of the funnel are composed of ciliated columnar cells. In the surface and lateral part of the folds, ciliated cells and non-ciliated secretory cells tend to alternate in the epithelium of the caudal funnel and the necks, but are also found in groups of the simple cuboidal epithelium at the bases of the grooves between the ridges and tubular glands found in the subepithelium. 3. The secretory material of the non-ciliated secretory cills contains PAS-positive and alcian blue-positive granules, and these materials show purple colour in the basic fuchsin-methylene blue stain. 4. The cells of the glandular groove and tubular gland of the neck portion of the oviduct mostly show weak PAS-positive, and alcian blue stain negative reaction. The tubular gland cells of the infndibulum contain pink of purple colour granules, and without reaction in the anterior neck portion of the infundibulum in basic fuchsin and methylene blue stain.
Dorsal and ventral epithelium of leech, Whitemenia edentula, were observed, using both light and electron-microscope. Results are as follows. Epithelia are composed of simple columnar or irregularly-shaped epithelium, the transveral folds were seen in the cross-sectioned dorsal and ventral epithelia, but only longitudinal folds(depth $500{\mu}m$, width $350{\mu}m$) were discovered in the ventral epithelium. As to muscular tissue under the dorsal epithelium of Whitemenia edentula, that of longitudinal muscle layer is thicker and more developed than that of circular muscle layer. Seven gland cells (type-A, B, C, D, E, F and H cells) and one pigment cell (type-G cell) were discovered in the whitemenia edentula. Those were identified as three kinds of the neutral mucopolysaccharide granoles (type-A, B and F cells), two kinds of acidic mucopolysaccharide granules (type-C and D cells), and two kinds of non-reactive granules respectively (type-E and F cells). The glanules of the type-A and type-B gland cells ae electronly high-dense, and surrounded by the muscular tissue. As to the distribution of gland cells, the type-A, type-B, type-C, type-D, type-I and type-H gland cells were discovered only between the connective tissue and the circular muscle layer, while type-F gland cells were discovered only between tile circular muscle layer and the longitudinal muscle layer.
The esophageal cyst result from a wrong cleavage of the primitive gut in the 4 weeks embryo. In embryo and after seperation of the tracheal diverticulum, the esophagus is lined with ciliated cells which are able cover a "cystic duplication". It is often difficult to distinguish between the bronchogenic and the esophageal cyst. Pathological findings showed the presence of a ciliated epithelium without cartilage which was diagnosed as an esophageal cyst. The patient was 21 year old man for evaluation of the cyst in the posterior mediastinum. The cyst was located the intramural esophagus. Microscopically, the cyst was lined with ciliated columnar epithelium and there was no evidence of cartilage. The cyst was confirmed as the intramural esophageal cyst.geal cyst.
The histological profiles and endocrine cells in the bursa of Fabricius of the duck (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) were studied at 23 days of incubation, at hatching, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 9 weeks, 10 weeks and 32 weeks after hatching. Histologically epithelium of bursa Fabricius were pseudostratified columnar and simple columnar epithelium. Numerous lymphatic follicles and well developed plica were observed in this study. The sections were reacted immunohistochemically using antisera specific to bovine chromogranin(BCG), serotonin and somatostatin antisera using immunohistochemical methods. A few number of BCG-immunoreactive cells were detected from 23 days of incubation to 5 weeks after hatching and serotonin-immunoreactive cells were also observed from 23 days of incubation to 3 weeks after hatching. No somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.
The purpose of the experiment was to clarify morphologically normal growth pattern of the ductus deference in accordance with the sex maturity of meat-type cockerels. 1. Diameter of lumens in u, pp.r, mid and lower parts of ductus deferens, the most conspicuous enlargement of lumen was observed in the lower part. Heights of epithelial layers of ductus deferens showed abrupt growth at 12 weeks of age with subsequent gradual growth in all the part of u, pp.r, mid and lower, and heights of those at 30 weeks were a, pp.oximately 4 times as large in the u, pp.r and mid parts and 5 times as large in the lower part in contrast to those at 4 weeks of age. Thickness of muscular layer of ductus showed gradual growth in contrast with the diameter of lumen and height of epithelial layer, showing 1.3 times as large in the u, pp.r part, 1.6 times in the mid part and 1.9 times in the lower part at 30 weeks of age in contrast to the thickness at 4 weeks of age. 2. Within 10 weeks after hatching, lining cells of ductus deferens were mainly composed of round cells and columnar cells in simple columnar epithelium. During 10th to 20th week, the lining cells were mainly composed of high columnar cells and round cells in pseudostratified epithelium. From 22nd week, the lining cells were composed of pseudostratified columnar cells. Whereas round cells disa, pp.ared gradually. Enlargement of lumen and pooling of sperms in ductus deferens coincided with the maturation of seminiferous tubules. 3. In simple correlation between the values of testis weight and the values from various measurements in the ductus deferens, there was significant correlation coefficient with each other. 4. In the India ink absorption test, India ink granules were not absorbed on the epithelium of the ductus deferens, but the granules reactive to acid phosphatase a, pp.ared in a line on the free border of each parts of the ductus deferens. The granules reactive to alkaline phosphatase were noted on the luminal border of ductus deferens mainly, but weak reaction showed than acid phophatase were a, pp.ared. The granules reactive to PAS were a, pp.ared mostly near on the free border of hte epithelial cells of ductus deferens. 5. Number of sperm, Indes of sperm vitality and MRT in the different parts of ductus deferens were tended to be somewhat dominant in the mid and lower parts than in u, pp.r part, even though not significant in the statistical analysis. Ratio of sperm abnormality was tended to be relatively high in the u, pp.r part too, and in the sperm of abnormality blunted head was less in number significantly in the mid and lower part than in the u, pp.r part.
The anatomy of the renal papilla and pelvis of the bat(Pipistrellus abramus abramus Temminck) and their ultrastructure of the epithelium has been studied by means of light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The bats were captured at Ondal cave located in Yangchun-Myun, Tanyang-Kun, Chungchongpuk-Do, Korea in the active(July) and hibernating(January) phases. A conical renal papilla with several papillary foramina at the apex was curved toward the ureter. At the margin of the funnel-shaped renal pelvis, the fornix extended deeply into the kidney parenchyme was formed between the outer zone of the medulla and the cortex. The epithelium of the papilla covered the inner zone of the medulla. The epithelium of the fornix medially overlayed the outer zone of the medulla, and laterally the cortex. The surface epithelium of the papilla was simple columnar in shape with the scanty organelles and the short microvilli on their luminal surface. The fornix was Jined with $1{\sim}2$ cell layered squamous epithelium. On the medial surface of the fornix, two types of the superficial epithelial cells were identified; one had numerous short microvilli and the other had the microplicae and plaques on their luminal surface. The lateral surface of the fornix lined with the epithelial cells showed microridges and plaques on the luminal surface. The epithelial cells on the medial and lateral surfaces of the fornix were similar to their internal ultrastructures. The pelvic epithelium was a typical transitional type, which was composed of a layer of basal cells, one or two layers of intermediate cells, and a layer of superficial(facet) cells. The fusiform vesicles were observed in the cytoplasm of the intermediate and facet cells. There were no noticeable morphological changes in the epithelium of the papilla, fornix and pelvis except the medial epithelium of the fornix in the hibernating cycle. The microvillar cells were more numerous in the hibernating phase than in the active phase. The morphology, of the renal papilla and fornix of bats, indicates that a functional relationship may exist between the pelvic urine and the renal parenchyme.
