  • A reliable computational heat transfer model has been investigated to define the heat transfer characteristics of a spray column direct contact heat exchanger, which is often utilized in the process involving counterflows for heat and mass transfer operations. Most of the previous studies investigated are one-dimensional unsteady solutions based on rather fragmentary experimental data. Development of a multidimensional numerical model and a computational algorithm are essential to analyze the inherent multidimensional characteristics of a direct contact heat exchanger. The present study has been carried out numerically and establishes a solid simulation algorithm for the operation of a direct contact heat exchanger. Operational and system parameters such as the speed and direction of working fluid droplets at the injection point, and the effects of aspect ratio and void fraction of continuous fluid are examined thoroughly as well to assess their influence on the performance of a spray column.

  • This paper presents experimental study on long-term behavior of RC and SRC columns. Shrinkage and creep tests were performed for two types of concrete used in manufacturing RC and SRC column specimens. Also, long-term tests under sustained load were carried out for RC and SRC column specimens. Shrinkage functions and creep coefficients to optimally fit the corresponding data were obtained from regression analysis and the regression results, ACI and CEB- FIP 90 model were applied to analyse long-term behvavior of RC and SRC column specimens. Creep coefficients calculated from test data were lower than those predicted by ACI and CEB-FIP 90 models. Long-term analysis results for RC and SRC column specimens using the regression results were relatively more accurate than those obtained using the existing models.

  • This paper documents an experimental study of dynamic response of reinforced concrete beams following instantaneous removal of a bearing column. Four half-scale specimens representing two-span beam bridging across the removed column were tested. The test boundary conditions simulated rotational and longitudinal restraints imposed on a frame beam by the neighboring structural components. The gravity loads were simulated by attaching mass blocks on the beams at three locations. Dynamic loading effects due to sudden removal of a column were simulated by quickly releasing the supporting force at the middle of the specimens. The experimental study investigated the load-carrying capacity of beams restrained longitudinally at the boundaries and dynamic impact on forces. The tests confirmed the extra flexural strength provided by compressive arch action under dynamic loading. The tests also indicated that the dynamic amplification effects on forces were much lower than that assumed in the current design guideline for progressive collapse.

  • This investigation was carried out in order to find out changes in head postures and in craniofacial morphology, in relation to the inclination of cervical column. For this study 85 subjects, consisting 39 males and 49 females, between the ages of 7 to 24 years old were chosen, and following results were observed after analysing the correlation coefficients between each structures. 1. No definite relationships were observed between the inclination of cervical column (CVT/HOR) and the inclination of anterior cranial base (SN/VER) 2. No definite relationships were observed between the inclination of mandibular ramus (RL/HOR) and the inclination of mandibular inclination (MLP/VER). 3. In subjects with anteriorly inclined cervical column, increase in mandibular plane inclinations (ML/VER) were observed. 4. No definite relationships were observed between the inclination of cervical column (CVT/HOR) and changes in palatal plane (NL/VER).

  • The optimum design of liquid column dampers in seismic vibration control considering system parameter uncertainty is usually performed by minimizing the unconditional response of a structure without any consideration to the variation of damper performance due to uncertainty. However, the system so designed may be sensitive to the variations of input system parameters due to uncertainty. The present study is concerned with robust design optimization (RDO) of liquid column vibration absorber (LCVA) considering random system parameters characterizing the primary structure and ground motion model. The RDO is obtained by minimizing the weighted sum of the mean value of the root mean square displacement of the primary structure as well as its standard deviation. A numerical study elucidates the importance of the RDO procedure for design of LCVA system by comparing the RDO results with the results obtained by the conventional stochastic structural optimization procedure and the unconditional response based optimization.

  • This study aims at examinating the change of architectural technique in the residential district of Seoktanri(石灘里), and then extracting the restorable types from it. The constructive technique was advanced in the composition of walls and the use of footing. The arrangement of columns was developed to standing them in a row and three rows in the center of interior space. In the light of excavated relics and the position of furnace, the interior space is seperated into cooking-heating, working and storing space. By the difference of height and the slope, the floor is divided into two parts which are low and high. According to the arrangement of column-holes, the types of roofs to be restored are as follows; the gable roof without column-hole, the hipped roof with center-column-holes(中央柱孔) in a row and the gable roof with center-column-holes in three rows.

  • In this study, a moment resisting precast concrete beam-column connection is proposed. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the connection behavior subjected to cyclic loading. Three precast beam-column interior connections and one monolithic connection were tested. Variable included the detailing used at the joint to achieve structural constructability and the location of mild steel reinforcement and high strength bar. During specimen fabrication, the joint details enables ease and speed of construction. Connection performance is evaluated on the basis of ductility, energy dissipation capacity, connection strength, and drift capacity. Based on test results, the precast concrete beam-column connection is capable of matching or exceeding the performance of the monolithic connection.

  • Current ACI and AIJ guidelines only address the importance of the concrete strength and geometry of the joint. There are no significant attention paid to other variables. In addition, the current design code doesn't predict the ductility of the beam-column assemblies. The former researcher proposed the analytical model to predict the shear strength of the joint panel as well as the ductility of the beam-column assemblies in year 2004. In this study, the experiments to investigate shear behavior of reinforced concrete beam-column joints and to verify proposed model were carried out, based on the experimental results. As the formal researcher proposed, the factor K (K=0.5), the ductility of BJ-failure was predicted reasonably when the transverse reinforcement ratio exceeded 0.0186. However, the proposed equation showed a large discrepancies in the ductility estimating when transverse reinforcement ratio was below 0.0186.

  • Liquid column separation occurs when the valve on the pipeline is closed rapidly in an oil hydraulic system. In this case two-step pressure rise is sometimes observed in a comparatively short pipeline. In this study the two-step pressure rise phenomenon was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiments showed that maximum pressure values during two-step pressure rise might exceed extremely the values computed by the theory of rigid-liquid-column separation. So the two-step pressure rise phenomenon appears one of important factors of pipe strength design. From the theoretical considerations based on the experimental and numerical results, the mechanism of two-step pressure rise phenomenon could be explained clearly.

  • The effect of column loss location on the structural response of steel moment resisting frames (MRF) is investigated in this study. A series of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were performed to determine the resistance of a generic frame to an arbitrary column loss and detect the structural members that are susceptible to failure progression beyond that point. Both force-controlled and deformation-controlled actions based on UFC 4-023-03 and ASCE/SEI 41-06 were implemented to define the acceptance criteria for nine APM cases defined in this study. Results revealed that the structural resistance against an arbitrary column loss in the top story is at least 80% smaller than that of the bottom story. In addition, it was found that the dynamic increase factor (DIF) at the failure point is at most 1.13.
