  • As concrete is most usable material in construction industry it's been required to improve its quality. Nowadays, nanotechnology offers the possibility of great advances in construction. For the first time, the nonlinear buckling of straight concrete columns armed with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) resting on foundation is investigated in the present study. The column is modelled with Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The characteristics of the equivalent composite being determined using the Mori-Tanaka model. The foundation around the column is simulated with spring and shear layer. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, energy methods and Hamilton's principal, the governing equations are derived. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used in order to obtain the buckling load of structure. The influences of volume percent of SWCNTs, geometrical parameters, elastic foundation and boundary conditions on the buckling of column are investigated. Numerical results indicate that reinforcing the concrete column with SWCNTs, the structure becomes stiffer and the buckling load increases with respect to concrete column armed with steel.

  • In this paper, the behavior of interior steel fiber reinforced concrete beam - column joints (BCJs) under cyclic loading is investigated. An experimental program including tests on twelve reinforced concrete (BCJs) specimens under cyclic loading was carried out. The test specimens are divided into two groups having different geometry: group (G1) (symmetrical BCJs specimens) and group (G2) (nonsymmetrical BCJs specimens). The parameters considered in this study are the steel fibers (SFs) content by volume of concrete (Vf), the spacing of shear reinforcement at the joint region, and the area of longitudinal flexural reinforcement. Test results show that the addition of 0.5% SFs with stirrups spacing S=Smax has effectively enhanced the overall performance of BCJs with respect to energy dissipation, ductility ratio, spreading and width of cracks. The failure of specimens is governed mainly by the formation of a plastic hinge at the face column and outside the beam-column junction. Secondary shear cracks were also observed in the beam-column junctions.

  • Concrete in a CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) column has enhanced strength and ductility because it is triaxially confined by a steel tube. But CFT columns are designed based on linear analyses by stress block method without the confining effect or the nonlinearity of the concrete. These make the significantly difference between the analysis results and the experimental results. Thus in this study, a nonlinear CFT column model was developed considering the confining effect on the concrete in a CFT column. This developed model was verified by experimental results from other researchers and compared with the results of various specifications. With the developed model, parametric studies were performed and the developed column model showed reasonable and accurate results.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of an error of prefounded column straightness and to measure the error during Top-Down construction. There are several causes of an error of prefounded column : (1) The columns are connected by welding or other methods. (2) concrete and aggregates are put in columns. (3) The columns are constructed during the construction. The error of column straightness is different for each column, and the tilting of columns is shown in one or two directions between floors. The additional loads caused by the error of straightness may give damage to buildings.

  • The effective length factor of a framed column may be determined by means of the alignment chart procedure. This method is based on many unrealistic assumptions, among which is that all columns have the same stiffness parameter, which is dependent on the length, axial load, and moment of inertia of the column. A new approximate method is developed for the determination of effective length factors for columns in unbraced frames. This method takes into account the effects of inelastic column behaviour, far end conditions of the restraining beams and columns, semi-rigid beam-to-column connections, and differentiated stiffness parameters of columns. This method may be implemented on a microcomputer. A numerical study was carried out to demonstrate the extent to which the involved parameters affect the K factor. The beam-to-column connection stiffness, the stiffness parameter of columns, and the far end conditions of restraining members have a significant effect on the K factor of the column under investigation. The developed method is recommended for design purposes.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the straightness of prefounded columns during underground construction stages. There are several causes of an error of prefounded column: (1) columns connected by welding or bolting, (2) by placement of concrete and aggregates around columns, (3) movement during construction, and (4) load applied during construction. The error of column straightness is different for each column, and the tilting of columns is shown in one or two directions between floors. The additional loads caused by the error of straightness may give damage to buildings. This paper presents the measurement results of column straightness, and thus providing a basis for further analysis.

  • A study on the structural dissipation energy and crushing strong is presented for the axially compressed straight square box column and off-axially compressed tapered box column. A new formula on the energy dissipation and crushing strength of the tapered box column is proposed, where the tapered box column is replaced by the equivalent straight square box column. It is seen that the theoretical solutions agree well with experimental results.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. A laboratory model test was carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. D is the diameter of the column. The transient process of pore water pressure with loading and the characteristics of consolidation were studied with the data gained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed for the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to check the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. As a result, it is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material.

  • Column base is very important part of steel structure because it transmits load to foundation in structure. Column base which is used frame construction in the inside and outside of the country is distributed into exposed-type, concrete encased and imbeded-type. Exposed-type column base is most profitable, if consider reuse and recycle of elements first of all. In this study, we proposed a new style exposed-type column base improved in performance for construction work and mechanical performance.
