  • Counters for various kinds of bank notes require high-speed distinctive point extraction and recognition for notes. In this paper we propose a new point extraction and data extraction method from specific parts of a bank note representing the same color. The recognition algorithm uses a back-propagation neural network that has coordinate data input. The proposed algorithm is designed to minimize recognition time.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate material designation in library cataloging and to suggest General Material Designation (GMD) and Specific Material Designation(SMD) in Korean. A summary of the study follows. In library cataloging, methods of indicating the type of material are : (1) color-coding, (2) media code as part of the call number, (3) material designation in physical description area or note area, (4) GMD and SMD. GMD is a term indicating the broad class of material to which a bibliographic item belongs. SMD is a term indicating the special class of material to which a bibliographic item belongs. GMD was listed in parenthesis following the title proper before AACR1975 code, but currently it is listed in square brackets after the AACR1975 code. AACR2 was the standard cataloging rule in GMD and SMD terminology. It is suggested that GMD be used in Korean for graphic material, sound recordings, drawings, microform, multimedia, videorecordings, manuscripts, photographs, slides, printed music, motion pictures, printed texts, objects, braille, cartographic materials, computer files and transparenies.

소비자의 향기 선호와 향기에 의한 이미지, 색채 및 TPO 연상 (Consumer's Fragrance Preference and Image, Color and TPO Associations with Fragrance)

  • This study investigated consumer's fragrance preferences as well as image, color, and TPO associations with fragrance. Eight branded perfumes of four fragrance families were selected according to the top note (floral, fruity, green, and citrus) as stimuli; consequently, fragrance preferences and associations were measured. A survey that included a scent test was conducted; subsequently, 186 responses from male and female consumers in their twenties were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, paired t-test, and chi-square analysis. The fruity fragrance was shown to be preferred the most. The perfume itself was associated with cool image, blue or pale tone colors, summer, and casual occasions in general, while a citrus fragrance was related to warm, winter, and deep tone colors in specific. Fragrance associations could be utilized in perfume marketing plans and activities such as advertising and packaging development.

  • Stockigt sizing test, which is readily affected by individual tester's bias as well as testing conditions in recognizing red coloration, had to be modified to improve its reliability and reproducibility. The novel testing system with the automatic recognizing program of red coloration was developed with the auxiliary equipments including an automatic liquid dispenser and a specimen shifter. The analysis program used a hue value of a droplet image in recognizing a point of time on red coloration instead of RGB values that are not similar to human perception of color. Hue was more sensitive in recognizing the red coloration of a droplet than the other two factors, Saturation and Value. During the test, the program records the time consumed up to a specific hue value of a droplet on a specimen. Differently from the conventional test, the automatic test could obtain a reliable and reproducible sizing degree with a minor error. Furthermore, the Stockigt sizing degree measured by the automatic system showed great correlations with contact angle and Hercules sizing degree. It means that such great correlations will contribute to the development of an integrated measuring system capable of predicting contact angle, surface tension, surface energy and Hercules sizing degree of paper and paperboards through the Stbckigt sizing test. It was meaningful to note that the automatic system for Stbckigt sizing test might be able to used to predict contact angle, Hercules and Cobb sizing degree, based upon the high correlation coefficients.

  • We introduce a learning system for the sight reading of simple drum sequences. Sight reading is a cognitive-motor skill that requires reading of music symbols and actions of multiple limbs for playing the music. The system provides knowledge of results (KR) pertaining to the learner's performance by color-coding music symbols, and guides the learner by indicating the corresponding action for a given music symbol using additional auditory or vibrotactile cues. To evaluate the effects of KR and guidance cues, three learning methods were experimentally compared: KR only, KR with auditory cues, and KR with vibrotactile cues. The task was to play a random 16-note-long drum sequence displayed on a screen. Thirty university students learned the task using one of the learning methods in a between-subjects design. The experimental results did not show statistically significant differences between the methods in terms of task accuracy and completion time.

  • A lot of foreign objects(ceramics, pottery, bronze, glassware and coins, etc.) have been found in the archaeological sites in Korea. These foreign objects are the evidences of the cultural exchanges of that time, whose scale and routes are an important part of the studies in ancient history. So it is crucial to accumulate basic reference information such as the raw materials and the production method of these objects through scientific researches, along with archeological researches. These scientific research materials provide a basis for finding the importing route and the origin of these objects. Besides, we can find out extraordinary and distinctive production technique by comparison with tile domestic objects. This article reports the result of an analysis, performing on 36 samples of the glassware fragments excavated from the South Tomb of the Hwangnamdaechong, to verify their components and note peculiar features. We have analyzed the major and minor components of 10 elements, and then by using these data examined the differences in the composition of components, varying with the origin and color of glassware. We used the PCA(principal component analysis) as the statistical method to classify the sample in order to find out how the samples formed groups.

경'과 관련 술어의 개념에 관한 고찰 : 관련된 한자어의 해석을 중 심으로 (The Concepts of the Landscape : An Interpretation of related Chinese Characters)

  • This study aims at scrutinizing the etymological meanings and literal usages of the term Gyung perse so as to clarify the traditional concepts formualted in the northeastern Asian countries. Related classical dictionaries and literatures in Korea and China were consulted intensively. Strictly speaking, the compound word gyung-gwan(景觀) composed of gyung(景:seen objects) and gwan(觀:seeing) in terms of word formation is not the synonym of the English term Landscpe. The Chinese character Gyung(景) composed of the character il(日:the Sun) and the character gyung(京:royal palace or capital city) originally indicated a brilliant and beautiful view of the capital city seen in a clear and bright daylight. Thereafter this ideographic letter had been used to indicate an unusual view which is aesthetically and can be used as a typical landscape schema or a model. Due to intrinsic nature of this kind of view, the meanings of gyung had been extended connotativelly as well as denotativelly: the meaning worthy of note in terms of landscape studies ar l) visible object which places some physical and psychological distance from the observer; 2)the scene or the backdrop of a theater, 3)a defined vista. With these in mind, meanings and usages of related terms as Kwung(光:light or bright), Pung(風:wind or fresh). Chi(致:fine), Mul(物:object or world), Gae (槪:general), Seung(勝:outstanding or surpassing), Saek(色:color or colorful), which had produced diversified and delicate connotations through compounding with the etymon Gyung, were reviewed.

A Vision-Based Method to Find Fingertips in a Closed Hand

  • Hand gesture recognition is an important area of research in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The geometric attributes of the hand play an important role in hand shape reconstruction and gesture recognition. That said, fingertips are one of the important attributes for the detection of hand gestures and can provide valuable information from hand images. Many methods are available in scientific literature for fingertips detection with an open hand but very poor results are available for fingertips detection when the hand is closed. This paper presents a new method for the detection of fingertips in a closed hand using the corner detection method and an advanced edge detection algorithm. It is important to note that the skin color segmentation methodology did not work for fingertips detection in a closed hand. Thus the proposed method applied Gabor filter techniques for the detection of edges and then applied the corner detection algorithm for the detection of fingertips through the edges. To check the accuracy of the method, this method was tested on a vast number of images taken with a webcam. The method resulted in a higher accuracy rate of detections from the images. The method was further implemented on video for testing its validity on real time image capturing. These closed hand fingertips detection would help in controlling an electro-mechanical robotic hand via hand gesture in a natural way.

구기자가 나박김치의 발효 중 관능적 특성과 젖산균수에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Kugija(Lycium chinesis Miller) on the Sensory Properties and Lactic Acid Bacterial count of Nabak Kimchi during Fermentation)

  • This research was conducted to find the effects of the addition of kugija to the quality and conservativeness of Nabak kimchi. Kugija extract was prepared by boiling kugija fruits, at different ratios (1, 3, 5 and 7%; w/v) in water for 30 minutes. The changes in the sensory and microbiological properties of the Nabak kimchi were measured for 25 days, following the preparation at a uniform temperature of 10$^{\circ}C$, and compared to a control (distilled water without kugija). For the properties of acceptability, the Nabak kimchi treated with 3% kugija was evaluated as being best during the whole fermentation. The number of total cell counts and number of lactic acid microorganisms gradually increased to a maximum, and then decreased. It was the maximum for controlling and 1 % treatment on day 2, forand 3, 5 and 7% treatment on day 7. (Eds note: the highlighted sentence needs c1arification\ulcorner)This experimental study revealed the effect of kugija extract in enhancing the eating qualities on Nabak kimchi and retarding the fermentation over the initial seven days. The optimum levels of kugija extract on Nabak kimchi obtained through experiments was between 1 and 3% of the water content. Although 3% gave a better color, the fermentation-retarding effect and savory taste. The application of kugija extract could be domestically applied to improve the eating quality and the preservation of traditionally prepared Nabak kimchi.

콘텐트 기반의 이미지검색을 위한 분류기 접근방법 (Image Classification Approach for Improving CBIR System Performance)

  • 콘텐트 기반 이미지 검색은 기존의 태그 또는 레이블이 있는 텍스트 기반의 검색이 아닌 이미지의 특징을 이용하여 검색하는 방법이다. 실생활 이미지 데이터는 태그나 레이블이 달려있는 경우가 많지 않기 때문에 텍스트 기반의 검색 방법을 사용하기 힘든 경우가 있다. 또한, 기존에 주로 사용되는 이미지 특징 벡터의 유사도를 사용하여 검색하는 방법은 추출 벡터의 유사도 기준으로 사용자가 의도한 결과가 나올지 확신할 수 없다. 예를 들어 사용자가 입력한 질의 이미지와 검색된 이미지들의 종류가 일치하는지의 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 사용자가 질의 이미지의 클래스를 예상하고 결과도 동일한 클래스를 원한다는 가정에 착안하여 이미지 검색 엔진의 성능을 개선하였다. 기존의 유사도 기반의 검색에 머신 러닝 기법을 사용한 이미지 분류기를 적용하여 질의와 동일한 클래스의 결과를 찾는 방법을 제안하였으며, 그 성능을 20개 카테고리에 속하는 11,530개의 이미지로 구성되어 있는 PASCAL VOC 공개 데이터를 이용하여 검증하였다.
