  • Collisions between tags greatly reduce the identification speed in radio frequency identification (RFID) systems and increase communication overhead. In particular for an active RFID system, tags are powered by small batteries, and a large number of re-transmissions caused by collisions can deteriorate and exhaust the tag energy which may result in missing tags. An efficient collision-free arbitration protocol for active RFID systems is proposed in this paper. In this protocol, a new mechanism involving collision detection, collision avoidance, and fast tag access is introduced. Specifically, the pulse burst duration and busy-tone-detection delay are introduced between the preamble and data portion of a tag-to-reader (T-R) frame. The reader identifies tag collision by detecting pulses and transmits a busy tone to avoid unnecessary transmission when collision occurs. A polling process is then designed to quickly access the collided tags. It is shown that the use of the proposed protocol results in a system throughput of 0.612, which is an obvious improvement when compared to the framed-slotted ALOHA (FSA) arbitration protocol for ISO/IEC 18000-7 standard. Furthermore, the proposed protocol greatly reduces communication overhead, which leads to energy conservation.

  • A collision-free trajectory planning algorithm using an iterative learning concept is proposed for dual robot arms in a 3-D common workspace to accurately follow their specified paths with constant velocities. Specifically, a collision-free trajectory minimizing the trajectory error is obtained first by employing the linear programming technique. Then the total operating time is iteratively adjusted based on the maximum trajectory error of the previous iteration so that the collision-free trajectory has no deviation from the specified path and also that the operating time is near-minimal. To show the validity of the proposed algorithm, a numerical example is presented based on two planar robots.

  • Collision avoidance is a method to direct a mobile robot without collision when traversing the environment. This kind of navigation is to reach a destination without getting lost. In this paper, we use a genetic algorithm for the path planning and collision avoidance. Genetic algorithm searches for path in the entire, continuous free space and unifies global path planning and local path planning. It is a efficient and effective method when compared with traditional collision avoidance algorithm.

  • A Potential Field Method is applied to the proposed algorithm for the planning of collision-free paths of redundant manipulators. The planning is carried out on the base of kinematic configuration. To make repulsive potentials, sources are distributed on the boundaries of obstacles. To escape from local minimum of the main potential and to attack other difficulties of the planning, various potentials are defined simultaneously, Inverse Kinematics Problems of the redundant manipulators are solved by unconstrained optimization method. Computer simulation result of the path planning is presented.

  • A neural optimization network is designed to solve the collsion-free inverse kinematics problem for redundant robot manipulators under the constraints of joint limits, maximum velocities and maximum accelerations. And the fuzzy rules are proposed to determine the weightings of neural optimization networks to avoid the collision between robot manipulator and obstacles. The inputs of fuzzy rules are the resultant distance, change of the distance and sum of the changes. And the output of fuzzy rules is defined as the capability of collision avoidance of joint differential motion. The weightings of neural optimization networks are adjusted according to the capability of collision avoidance of each joint. To show the validities of the proposed method computer simulation results are illustrated for the redundant robot with three degrees of freedom,

  • This paper presents a collision free mobile robot navigation based on the fuzzy inference fusion model in unkonown environments using multi-ultrasonic sensor. Six ultrasonic sensors are used for the collision avoidance approach where CCD camera sensors is used for the trajectory following approach. The fuzzy system is composed of three inputs which are the six distance sensors and the camera, two outputs which are the left and right velocities of the mobile robot's wheels, and three cost functions for the robot's movement, direction, obstacle avoidance, and rotation. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, we performed real experiments with mobile robot with ultrasonic sensors. The results show that the proposed algorithm is apt to identify obstacles in unknown environments to guide the robot to the goal location safely.

  • Unlike FEM (Finite Element Method), which provides an accurate deformation of soft objects, FFD (Free Form Deformation) based methods have been widely used for a quick and responsive representation of deformable objects in real-time applications such as computer games, animations, or simulations. The FFD-AABB (Free Form Deformation Axis Aligned Bounding Box) algorithm was also suggested to address the collision handling problems between deformable objects at an interactive rate. This paper proposes an enhanced FFD-AABB algorithm to improve the frame rate of simulation by adding the bounding sphere based collision test between 3D deformable objects. We provide a comparative analysis with previous methods and the result of proposed method shows about an 85% performance improvement.

  • Robot manipulators for harvesting fruits must be controlled to track the desired path of end-effector to avoid obstacles under the consideration of collision free area and safety path. This paper presents a robot path control algorithm to secure a collision free area with the recognition of work environments. The flexible space, which does not damage fruits or branches of tree due to their flexibility and physical properties , extends the workspace. Now the task is to control robot path in the extended workspace with the consideration of collision avoidance and velocity limitation at the time of collision concurrently. The feasibility and effectiveness of the new algorithm for redundant manipulators were tested through simulations of a redundant manipulator for different joint velocities.

  • In this paper an algorithm is presented which serves for collision avoidance between robots with working space. The method is based on the concept of a hierarchical coordinator and permits an on-line application. Computing possible collision points a collision_free trajectory for the robot with no right_of_way precedence is generated. The computations are based on the states of the robots concerned including their practicable accelerations and velocities.

  • Collision free task planning for dual-arm robot which perform many subtasks in a common work space can be achieved in two steps : path planning and trajectory planning. path planning finds the order of tasks for each robot to minimize path lengths as well as to avoid collision with static obstacles. A trajectory planning strategy is to let each robot move along its path as fast as possible and delay one robot at its initial position or reduce speed at the middle of its path to avoid collision with the other robot.
