Currently, IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) is rising as the most popular means for the broadband wireless access network. In this thesis, we propose a QoS(Quality of Service)-Oriented mechanism using handshaking method of scanning phase in IEEE 802.11 handoff. In conventional process for handoff, the major criterion to select the best AP(Access Point) among candidates is normally based on the RSS(Received Signal Strength), which does not always make the selected network guarantee the maximum achievable performance. Even though the link quality with a neighboring AP is excellent, the AP may not be a good candidate to handoff to simply because MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol of IEEE 802.11 standard is contention-based such as CSMA/CA. Therefore, if we apply network level information to AP selection criteria, we can achieve better handoff efficiency rather than before. The analysis and simulation results applied to our new mechanism show clearly better performance than AP selection based on traditional handoff method.
This study proposes a system reliability analysis of rack storage facilities subjected to forklift colliding events. The proposed system reliability analysis consists of two steps: the first step is to identify dominant failure modes that most contribute to the failure of the whole rack facilities, and the second step is to evaluate the system failure probability. In the first step, dominant failure modes are identified by using a simulation-based selective searching technique where the contribution of a failure mode to the system failure is roughly estimated based on the distance from the origin in the space of the random variables. In the second step, the multi-scale system reliability method is used to compute the system reliability where the first-order reliability method (FORM) is initially used to evaluate the component failure probability (failure probability of one member), and then the probabilities of the identified failure modes and their statistical dependence are evaluated, which is called as the lower-scale reliability analysis. Since the system failure probability is comprised of the probabilities of the failure modes, a higher-scale reliability analysis is performed again based on the results of the lower-scale analyses, and the system failure probability is finally evaluated. The illustrative example demonstrates the results of the system reliability analysis of the rack storage facilities subjected to forklift impact loadings. The numerical efficiency and accuracy of the approach are compared with the Monte Carlo simulations. The results show that the proposed two-step approach is able to provide accurate reliability assessment as well as significant saving of computational time. The results of the identified failure modes additionally let us know the most-critical members and their failure sequence under the complicated configuration of the member connections.

Video is principal information that facilitates commander's immediate command decision. Due to fading characteristics of radio link, however, it is difficult to stably transmit video in a multi-hop wireless environment. In this paper, we propose a MANET structure composed of a link adaptive routing protocol and a TDMA MAC protocol to stably transmit video traffic in a ultra-narrowband video streaming network. The routing protocol can adapt to link state change and select a stable route. The TDMA protocol enables collision-free video transmission to a destination using multi-hop dynamic resource allocation. As a result of simulation, the proposed MANET structure shows better video transmission performance than proposed MANET structure without link quality adaption, AODV with CSMA/CA, and OLSR with CSMA/CA structures.

A virtual vessel traffic control system is introduced to contribute to prevent a marine accident, e.g. ship collision or stranding. from happening. The system that comes from VTS limitaions, consists of both data acquisition by satellite remote sensing and a simulation of traffic environment stress (here, INOUE model used) based on the satellite data. Remotely sensed data cab be used to provide timely and detailed information about the marine safety, including the location, speed and direction of ships, and help us operate vessels safely and efficiently. If in the future, e.g. 5-minute after, environmental stress values that a ship may encounter on a voyage can be available, proper actions can be taken to prevent accidents. It lastly can be shown that JERS satellite data are used to track ships and extract their information.

Recently, many countries have been developing new protocols to improve the performance of tactical ad hoc networks for implementing NCW (Network Centric Warfare). Combat net radio (CNR) networks are the most important communication infra for the ground forces such as infantry of Army. U.S. Army had developed MIL-STD-188-220D that is the Interoperability Standard for DMTDs (Digital Messages Transfer Device Subsystems) for voice and data communication in CNR. MIL-STD-188-220D is a candidate for MAC protocol of TMMR which is next radio and has a few constraints to used in TMMR. NAD (Network Access Delay) defined in MIL-STD-188-220D needs time synchronization to avoid collision. However, it is difficult for time synchronization to fit in multi-hop environment. We suggest the enhanced DAP (Deterministic Adaptable Priority)-NAD to prevent conflicts and decrease delays in multi-hop CNR. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the performance in multi-hop CNR networks.
PURPOSES: Though the situation that the roundabouts are actively constructed, researches on the effect of the roundabouts focus mainly on the analysis of the expected effects of using only traffic simulation on the operation. Considering such problems, this study is conducted to analyze the effects of the various aspects based on field observation studies. METHODS: This study evaluated and analyzed the effects from the aspects of traffic operation, traffic safety, and traffic behavior by performing field observation studies with six roundabouts with/without signal controls on the pilot project areas for the roundabouts installed in 2010. RESULTS: Through the study results, it was found that the average travel time decreases by 14.7% and 2.4% on the signalized intersections and unsignalized intersections, respectively. The average travel speed increases by 9.7 and 5.8km/h on the roundabouts with/without signal lights. Regarding traffic safety, the speed deviation among individual vehicles decreases by approximately 18.4 to 32.7km/h, thus confirming the safety effects. As the decrease of the number of conflicts, it might be explained that car crashes and collision with pedestrians decreased by 62.2% and 66.7%. Also the result shows that the lowest point of speed in roundabouts appears near the yield line on the entry area on the roundabouts. When passing through the roundabouts, vehicles enter at a speed of 20-30km/h, which is the design speed of the circulatory lane and drive out the roundabout with a higher speed than the entry speed. CONCLUSIONS: When a roundabout is introduced at the intersections below certain traffic volume there are effects of traffic operation, traffic safety, and traffic behavior.

In Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET) Application, routing protocol is essential to ensure successful data transmission to all nodes. Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) Protocol is a reactive routing protocol that is mostly used in MANET applications. However, the protocol causes Route Request (RREQ) message flooding issue due to the broadcasting method at the route request stage to find a path to a particular destination, where the RREQ will be rebroadcast if no Request Response (RREP) message is received. A scalable neighbor-based routing (SNBR) protocol was then proposed to overcome the issue. In the SNBR protocol, the RREQ message is only rebroadcast if the number of neighbor nodes less than a certain fix number, known as drop factor. However, since a network always have a dynamic characteristic with a dynamic number of neighbor nodes, the fix drop factor in SNBR protocol could not provide an optimal flooding problem solution in a low dense network environment, where the RREQ message is continuously rebroadcast RREQ message until reach the fix drop factor. To overcome this problem, a new broadcasting method as Dynamic SNBR (DSNBR) is proposed, where the drop factor is determined based on current number of neighbor nodes. This method rebroadcast the extra RREQ messages based on the determined dynamic drop factor. The performance of the proposed DSNBR is evaluated using NS2 and compared with the performance of the existing protocol; AODV and SNBR. Simulation results show that the new routing protocol reduces the routing request overhead, energy consumption, MAC Collision and enhances end-to-end delay, network coverage ratio as a result of reducing the extra route request messages.

Due to recent changes in the maritime traffic environment, naval warship accidents are constantly occurring. Especially in 2017, serious loss of life was caused by a US navy destroyer accident. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of naval warship accident cases and construct an accident scenario by using naval training materials, adjudication of naval warship accidents and US navy destroyer accident reports. Based on the surveyed data, the status of accidents was identified and cases were analyzed. We reproduced 17 accident cases in accordance with accident reproduction procedure and constructed naval warship accident scenarios. As a result of analyzing the CPA, TCPA and PARK model for risk, reproducing 17 naval ship accident cases, collision risk increased on average 5-6 minutes before an accident. The result of this study represents basic data for naval and simulation education materials, contributing to the prevention of marine accidents.

This paper proposes architecture of a cognitive radio engine platform and the allowable frequency channel reasoning method that enables acquisition of the allowable channels for the military tactical network environment. The current military tactical wireless communication system is increasing need to secure a supplementary radio frequency to ensure that multiple wireless networks for different military wireless devices coexist, so that tactical wireless communication between the same or different systems can be operated effectively. This paper presents the allowable frequency channel reasoning method based on cognitive radio engine for realizing DSA(Dynamic Spectrum Access) as an optimal available frequency channel. To this end, a case-based allowable frequency channel reasoning method for cognitive radio devices is proposed through modeling of primary user's traffic status and calculation of channel occupancy probability. Also through the simulation of the performance analysis, changing rate of collision probability between the primary users' occupancy channel and the available channel acquisition information that can be used by the cognitive radio device was analysed.

Using directional antennas in wireless Ad hoc networks has many superiorities, including reducing interference, extending transmission range, and increasing space division multiplexing. However, directional transmission introduces two problems: deafness and directional hidden terminals problems. We observe that these problems result in saturation throughput disparity among the competing flows in directional CSMA/CA based Ad hoc networks and bring challenges for modeling the saturation throughput of the flows. In this article, we concentrate on how to model and analyze the saturation throughput disparity of different flows in directional CSMA/CA based Ad hoc networks. We first divide the collisions occurring in the transmission process into directional instantaneous collisions and directional persistent collisions. Then we propose a four-dimensional Markov chain to analyze the transmission state for a specific node. Our model has three different kinds of processes, namely back-off process, transmission process and freezing process. Each process contains a certain amount of continuous time slots which is defined as the basic time unit of the directional CSMA/CA protocols and the time length of each slot is fixed. We characterize the collision probabilities of the node by the one-step transition probability matrix in our Markov chain model. Accordingly, we can finally deduce the saturation throughput for each directional data stream and evaluate saturation throughput disparity for a given network topology. Finally, we verify the accuracy of our model by comparing the deviation of analytical results and simulation results.
