Structural failure due to seismic pounding between two adjacent buildings is one of the major concerns in the context of structural damage. Pounding between adjacent structures is a commonly observed phenomenon during major earthquakes. When modelling the structural response, stiffness of impact spring elements is considered to be one of the most important parameters when the impact force during collision of adjacent buildings is calculated. Determining valid and realistic stiffness values is essential in numerical simulations of pounding forces between adjacent buildings in order to achieve reasonable results. Several impact model stiffness values have been presented by various researchers to simulate pounding forces between adjacent structures. These values were mathematically calculated or estimated. In this study, a linear spring impact element model is used to simulate the pounding forces between two adjacent structures. An experimental model reported in literature was adopted to investigate the effect of different impact element stiffness k on the force intensity and number of impacts simulated by Finite Element (FE) analysis. Several numerical analyses have been conducted using SAP2000 and the collected results were used for further mathematical evaluations. The results of this study concluded the major factors that may actualise the stiffness value for impact element models. The number of impacts and the maximum impact force were found to be the core concept for finding the optimal range of stiffness values. For the experimental model investigated, the range of optimal stiffness values has also been presented and discussed.

Blast Hardened Bulkhead (BHB) is an important measure that can increase the ship's survivability as well as protect the lives of the crew by mitigating the damage extent caused by an internal explosion in the ship. In particular, both the pressure and the shock impulse should be considered when designing the BHB against reflected shock waves having a high pressure with a short duration. This study proposes a design method for BHB that considers both the pressure and the shock impulse generated during the internal explosion. In addition, analysis and design concepts for accident loads such as explosion, fire, and collision of NORSOK and DNVGL, one of the international design guidelines for the curtain plate type blast hardened bulkhead type applied by the Korean Navy, are utilized. If this method is applied, it is expected that it can be used as a design concept for the pressure as well as the shock impulse of the explosion load of the curtain plate.
The impact protection system consists of an arrangement of circular sheet pile cofferdams-denoted dolphin structuredeeply embedded in the seabed, filled with crushed rock and closed at the top with a robust concrete cap. Centrifuge model tests were performed to investigation the behaviors of dolphins in this study. Total 7 quasi-model tests and 11 dynamic model tests were performed. The main experimental results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, The experimental force-displacement results for quasi-static tests show a limited influence on the initial stiffness of the structure from the change in fill density and the related change in the stiffness of the fill. And by comparing the dissipation at the same dolphin displacement it was found that the denser fill increase the dissipation by 16% for the 20m dolphin and by 23% for the 30m dolphin. The larger sensitivity for the large dolphin is explained by a larger contribution to the dissipation from strain in the fill. In low level impacts the dynamic force-response is up to 26~58% larger than the quasi-static and the dissipation response is showed larger in small displacement. Hence, it is concluded conservative to use the quasi-static response characteristics in the approximation of the response, and it is further concluded that the dolphin resistance to low level impacts is demonstrated to be equivalent and even superior to the high level impacts.

In this paper, we propose Low Energy Service Discovery (LESD) protocol for common discovery mode of IEEE 802.15.8 Peer Aware Communications (PAC). In order to minimize power consumption, Basic Repetition Block (BRB) is defined. Device is able to select operating mode and synchronize other devices through it. Proposed MAC procedure is Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) based on overhearing technique. Even if device has not been received response signal since transmitted request signal, it is able to discover other devices of same group through the overhearing technique. IEEE 802.15.8 PAC has required that performances of common discovery mode are presented about discovered devices during the simulation time, discovery latency and average power consumption. By considering the number of devices per group and channel environment, two scenarios are evaluated through system level simulation and the simulation results of proposed scheme are compared with CSMA/CA in same simulation conditions. As a result, proposed scheme is able to get high energy efficiency of devices as well as increase the number of discovered devices during simulation time when the longer the number of devices is distributed over a limited area.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of driving performance and physiological responses between young male and female drivers for unexpected situation using a graphic vehicle simulator. The participants included 20 college graduates; 23 males aged $24.3\;{\pm}\;1.4$ with $2.3\;{\pm}\;1.5$ years of driving experiences and 23 females aged $23.2\;{\pm}\;2.1$ with $2.2\;{\pm}\;1.7$ years of driving experience. The participants were instructed to drive the vehicle simulator which was programed unexpected situation for two minutes. The physiological measurements used were autonomic responses of electrocardiogram (ECG) and skin conductance response (SCR), and the driving performance measurements used were the reaction time of break and the rate of collision for unexpected situation. Results showed that there were no significant differences between male and female drivers in the reaction time of break and the rate of collision for unexpected situation. Averaged R-R interval decreased and LF IHF and SCL amplitude increased for unexpected situation. There were no significant differences between male and female in the averaged R-R interval and LF/HF for unexpected situation. On the other hand, SCL amplitude of female was higher than male. Rising time to maximum SCL amplitude of female was longer than male.

The global surge in maritime traffic has resulted in an increased number of ship collisions, leading to significant economic, environmental, physical, and human damage. The causes of these maritime accidents are multifaceted, often arising from a combination of crew judgment errors, negligence, complexity of navigation routes, weather conditions, and technical deficiencies in the vessels. Given the intricate nuances and contextual information inherent in each incident, a methodology capable of deeply understanding the semantics and context of sentences is imperative. Accordingly, this study utilized the SentenceBERT model to analyze maritime safety tribunal decisions over the last 20 years in the Busan Sea area, which encapsulated data on ship collision incidents. The analysis revealed important keywords potentially responsible for these incidents. Cluster analysis based on the frequency of specific keyword appearances was conducted and visualized. This information can serve as foundational data for the preemptive identification of accident causes and the development of strategies for collision prevention and response.

Study on Changes in Vessel Traffic Services Due to Introduction of Maritime Autonomous Surface ShipsThe development of technologies related to Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) has been actively progressing since the mid-2010s, focusing on themes such as collision avoidance, route planning, digital twin, and communication technologies. On the other hand, research on land-based infrastructure connected with MASS, such as logistics systems, port facilities, and vessel traffic services, has relatively received less attention. This study analyzed impact of emergence of MASS on existing vessel traffic service operations and proposed changes in control operations to prepare for its impact. To do this, current vessel traffic service operations were analyzed and elements of MASS technology that could affect vessel traffic control were identified. A survey was conducted among vessel traffic controllers to identify items related to the control of MASS. Results analyzed using the AHP method showed that preparation for emergency response and communication methods with MASS were the most important. Based on this, we were able to derive detailed plans for basic MASS control procedures and emergency response procedures based on data communication within maritime traffic control areas. MASS control procedures proposed in this study are expected to be used as a solution to resolve issues related to traffic safety of MASS in coastal areas.
Currently, sharp increase of car is on the rise as a serious social problem due to loss of lives from car accident and environmental pollution. There is a study on ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) to seek coping measures. As for the commercialization of ITS, we aim for occupancy of world market through ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) related system development and international standardization. However, the domestic environment is very insufficient. Core factor technologies of ITS are Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Forward Collision Warning System, AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) system etc. These technologies are applied to cars to support driving of a driver. AEB system is stop the car automatically based on the result decided by the relative speed and distance with obstacle detected through sensor attached on car rather than depending on the driver. The purpose of AEB system is to measure the distance and speed of car and to prevent accident. Thus, AEB will be a system useful for prevention of accident by decreasing car accident along with the development of automobile technology. This study suggests a scenario to suggest a test evaluation method that accords with domestic environment and active response of international standard regarding the test evaluation method of AEB. Also, by setting the goal with function for distance, it suggests theoretic model according to the result. And the study aims to verify the theoretic evaluation standard per proposed scenario using car which is installed with AEB device through field car driving test on test road. It will be useful to utilize the suggested scenario and theoretical model when conducting AEB test evaluation.

The tracking filter plays a key role in the accurate estimation and prediction of maneuvering a vessel's position and velocity when attempting to enhance safety by avoiding collision. Therefore, in order to achieve accurate estimation and prediction, many oceangoing vessels are equipped with the Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA) system. However, the accuracy of prediction depends on the tracking filter's ability to reduce noise and maintain a stable transient response. The purpose of this paper is to derive the optimal values of the gain parameters used in tracking a High Dynamic Warship. The algorithm employs a ${\alpha}-{\beta}-{\gamma}$ filter to provide accurate estimates and updates of the state variables, that is, positions, velocity and acceleration of the high dynamic warship based on previously observed values. In this study, the filtering coefficients ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$ are determined from set values of the damping parameter, ${\xi}$. Optimization of the damping parameter, ${\xi}$, is achieved experimentally by plotting the residual error against different values of the damping parameter to determine the least value of the damping parameter that results in the optimum smoothing coefficients leading to a reduction in the noise corruption effect. Further investigation of the performance of the filter indicates that optimal smoothing coefficients depend on the initial and average velocity of the target.
This paper presents an efficient modeling system of virtual pottery in which the user can deform a body of virtual clay with a haptic tool for E-learning. We propose a Circular Sector Element Method (CSEM) which represents the virtual pottery with a set of circular sector elements based on the cylindrical symmetry of pottery. Efficient algorithms for collision detection and response, interactions between adjacent elements, and GPU-based visual-haptic synchronization are designed and implemented for the CSEM. Empirical evaluation showed that the modeling system is computationally efficient with finer details and provides convincing model deformation and force feedback. The developed system, if combined with educational contents, is expected to be used as an effective E-learning platform for elementary school students.
