  • In this study, finite element analysis of particle-surface collision using 2-dimensional elements was performed to observe the effects of abrasive size and impact angle. The result of the simulation on the change in abrasive size revealed that larger abrasive particle induced larger contact stress due to force transfer through slurry fluid as the particle moved and pushed the fluid. This observation brought an important finding that the slurry fluid could make the workpiece surface soften and then change the mechanical properties of the surface layer such as elastic modulus and yield strength. As for the impact angle, it was found that the contact stress increased with the angle of impact and jumped up at a specific angle. Such result would be attributed to the complex effects of the impact velocity and angle.

  • The front-end side members of vehicles(spot welded hat and double hat shaped section members) absorb most of the impact energy in a case of front-end collision. In this paper, specimens with various spot weld pitches have been tested with a high impact velocity of 7.19m/sec(impact energy of 1034J). The axial impact collapse simulation on the sections has been carried out to review the collapse characteristics of these sections, using an explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA3D. Comparing the results with experiments, the simulation has been verified; the energy absorbing capacity is analyzed and an analysis method is suggested to obtain exact collapse loads and deformation collapse modes.

  • Damage by high-speed impact fracture is a dominant mode of failure in several applications of concrete structures. Numerical modelling can play a crucial role in understanding and predicting complex fracture processes. The commonly used mesh-based Finite Element Method has difficulties in accurately modelling the high deformation and disintegration associated with fracture, as this often distorts the mesh. Even with careful re-meshing FEM often fails to handle extreme deformations and results in poor accuracy. Moreover, simulating the mechanism of fragmentation requires detachment of elements along their boundaries, and this needs a fine mesh to allow the natural propagation of damage/cracks. Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is an alternative particle based (mesh-less) Lagrangian method that is particularly suitable for analysing fracture because of its capability to model large deformation and to track free surfaces generated due to fracturing. Here we demonstrate the capabilities of SPH for predicting brittle fracture by studying a slender concrete structure (column) under the impact of a high-speed projectile. To explore the effect of the projectile material behaviour on the fracture process, the projectile is assumed to be either perfectly-elastic or elastoplastic in two separate cases. The transient stress field and the resulting evolution of damage under impact are investigated. The nature of the collision and the constitutive behaviour are found to considerably affect the fracture process for the structure including the crack propagation rates, and the size and motion of the fragments. The progress of fracture is tracked by measuring the average damage level of the structure and the extent of energy dissipation, which depend strongly on the type of collision. The effect of fracture property (failure strain) of the concrete due to its various compositions is found to have a profound effect on the damage and fragmentation pattern of the structure.

  • In the design phase of sea-crossing bridge projects, ship collision problem is mostly participated in decision of substructure section and it would be performed by risk assessment and impact simulations. Ship collision risk is assessed by probability model which is similar to method II of Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridge(AASHTO, 2009). However, several factors used in the applicable code are limited to inland waterways or have many local characteristics. Accordingly, it should be needed judgement of engineer or referred to related criteria, research finding. In this study risk assessment for In-cheon bridge and review of existing substructure's impact risk and resistance capacity are performed using the 2010's ship passage data. And then consideration regarding to presumption and applied instance of factors needed for risk assessment and related research findings are performed on the basis of AASHTO Guide's Method. As a result of study, adequate variable region of factors needed for risk assessment is defined and sensitivity analysis for appropriate region is performed. Consequently, factors that should be applied carefully or needed for direct analysis of local data are confirmed. This research could be fundamental material to risk assessment related to design for sea-crossing bridge taken into account ship collision.

  • Tn this study, the crashworthy design of the full rake of KHST (Korean High Speed Train under development in G7-project) is numerically evaluated using 2-dimensional crash dynamics. The results of KHST are compared with those of TGV-K (TGV for Seoul-Pusan line). KHST shows better crashworthy behaviors after impact. Specifically, impact forces, decelerations and overriding displacements are much reduced in KHST All the design guidelines under SNCF accident scenario (collision against a movable rigid mass of 15 ton at 110 km/h) are satisfied in KHST.

  • Steering column is a typical component that may injure the driver at a frontal collision accident. To protect the driver from an impact, it is very important to study the impact absorbing behaviour of steering column. The dynamic simulation were performed for the ball sleeve type impact absorbing steering column. The simulation results show similar trends to FMVSS 203 test results. Hence using the simulation program developed in this study, it is possible to predict dynamic response of steering system which is used in design modification. Impact absorbing performance of the ball sleeve type steering column with the column angle of $21^\circC$ and $26^\circC$ satisfies the safety criterion of FMVSS 203.

  • This paper presents the modeling and impact analysis for a rotating cantilever beam having a concentrated mass. The concentrated mass takes an impact force during the rotating motion and the transient response of the beam induced by the impact is calculated by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode method. The stiffness variation effect caused by the rotating motion is considered in this modeling. The effects of the concentrated mass size, impact position and the angular velocity of the beam on the transient responses are investigated through numerical studies.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the fracture characteristics of ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites with 1.5 volume ratio of polyvinyl alcohol and steel fiber by high velocity impact of steel projectile. We used gunpowder impact facility to evaluate the fracture characteristics of ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites by collision of steel projectile, and the impact velocity was from about 150 to 1,000m/s. The results of evaluation on the fracture characteristics of ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites were penetration grade, which is the kinetic energy more than three times of no-fiber reinforced specimen (Plain). In addition, ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites did not occurred critical damage other than the debris. In the case of mass loss, Plain specimen was proportional to kinetic energy of steel projectile, while ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites was not significantly affected by kinetic energy of steel projectile. In particular, this tendency had a close relationship with the fracture characteristics of back side of specimens, and the scabbing inhibiting efficiency of PVA specimen was higher than S specimen. In the results of verifying relationship between front and back side calculated by local damage, scabbing occurred at the region close to the back side in the ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites unlike Plain specimen. Thus, in this study, we examined principal fracture behaviors of ductile fiber reinforced cement based composites under collision of steel projectile, and verified that impact resistance performance was improved as compared to Plain specimen.

  • This research focused on minimizing the response of fixed cylindrical offshore structures to a ship impact considering the seawater fluid part. A collision between a ship and offshore structure is generally a complex problem and it is often impractical to perform rigorous finite element analyses to include all the effects and sequences during the collision. The structural behavior of a fixed cylindrical type offshore substructure with a seawater fluid part has a simpler response and small deformation due to the dissipation of impact energy. Upon applying the impact force of a ship to the cylindrical structure, the maximum acceleration, internal energy, and plastic strain are calculated for each load cases using Ls-dyna finite element software. In the maximum cases 2.0 m/s velocity, the response result for the structure was carried out to compare between having a fluid region and no fluid region. Fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed using the ALE method, which make it possible to apply a fluid region on the impact problem. The case of a fixed cylindrical type offshore structure without a seawater fluid part can be a more conservative design.
