  • The brainstem include midbrain, pons & medulla. In acute stage of brainstem infarction, neurologic symptoms may be progressive. So we must pay special attention to Wallenberg's syndrome. In other words, Wallenberg's syndrome is dorsolateral medullary syndrome. A-54-years-old woman was admitted because of vertigo, ataxia & somatic sensory loss of left face and right half-body. Brain MRI showed high SI in T2W, low SI in T1W lesion left medullary infarction. We diagnosed the case as Shin-heo type Oriental medically and prescribed Gihwangemjakamibang. Diabetes mellitus was found out. So We have controlled diabetes mellitus by Occidental medical therapy. In the end, The symptoms of the patient became better. We know that cooperative(oriental & occidental) medical therapy is better than one medical therapy. Here we present one case of Wallenberg's syndrome who was admitted at Kunpo Wonkwang University Hospital Oriental Neuropsychiatry from 14th March to 6th April. 2001.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Yeongkyekamjo-tang on patients with menopausal disorder. Methods : We recruited 3 patients with menopausal disorder, who have been suffering from palpitation and depression. In addition, the patients had been administrated Yeongkyekamjo-tang. The patients of menopausal disorder had been estimated with Kupperman's index, Beck's Depression Inventory, The Menopause Quiz of Argosy University, visual analogue scale and Heart rate variability. We measured the Kupperman's index, Beck's Depression Inventory and The Menopause Quiz of Argosy University for every seven days. The heart rate variability was estimated twice, before and after the treatment. Results : After the treatments, symptoms of menopausal disorder were decreased. Conclusions : This study suggests that Yeongkyekamjo-tang is significantly effective on patients with menopausal disorder as well as palpitation and depression.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the defense mechanism of oriental medicine students by using Ewha Defense Mechanism Test(EDMT) preliminarily. Method: We described the characteristics of the defense mechanism of oriental medicine students and compared the scores of EDMT with standard group. We analysed the differences of defense mechanism by sex (male, female) and age($\leq$29 and $\geq$30 yrs old) within oriental medicine students. The score of EDMT were verified by examination of one sample t-test and unpaired t-test. Results and Conclusions: First, there was no Major Defense Mechanism in oriental medicine students. Second, oriental medicine students had more defensive, passive inclination and used Evasion and Show-off more frequently. Third, the differences within oriental medicine students depended on age rather than sex. The younger students used immature and neurotic defense mechanisms more frequently, and the older students had more defensive and passive inclination.

  • Guillain-Barre syndrome, or acute inflammatory polyneuritis, is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks parts of the peripheral nervous system. The causes and mechanisms of this syndrome are unknown. Typically, Guillain-Barre syndrome can be diagnosed from the patient's symptoms and physical examination such as the rapid onset of weakness, paralysis and loss of reflexes. The analysis of CSF and electrical tests on nerve and muscle function can be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Most cases occur shortly after a viral infection. This is a clinical report about one patient suspected as having Guillain-Barre syndrome. The patient, a 62-year-old man had weakness in both legs after gastroduodenal disease. His weakness and general condition improved after Korean medical treatments, so this is reported as a potential treatment.

  • Pneumonia is an inflammation that forms at the mesopulmonum and alveolus that is also an acute infection with fever and cough. It is difficult for doctors to diagnose pneumonia in elderly patients, due to the variety of symptoms. For this reason, it, with its complications, is a major cause of death for the elderly. In this case, improvement was seen in an elderly patient diagnosed with pneumonia by X-ray, and by using Si-Kyung-Ban-Ha-Tang-Ka-Mi-Bang as a way of Kong-Bo-Kyum-Si, because in this case pneumonia was presumed Dam-Yel-Ong-Pye and Ki-Eum-Yang-Huh due to the weakness associated with old age. This thesis proposes that the elderly are better treated differently from other pneumonia patients due to the weakness that comes with old age.

  • Objectives : Polyneuropathies are diseases of multiple peripheral nerves. They are usually characterized by symmetrical, bilateral distal motor and sensory impairment with a graded increase in severity distally. It is generally regarded that the natural courses are poor, so we wanted to study the effects of Oriental medical treatment on a patient with polyneuropathy. Methods : We treated by conservative Oriental medical treatment a woman of 68 years who was diagnosed as a polyneuropathy and was hospitalized at Seoul Oriental Hospital, Kyungwon University, from 12th Mar. to 31st May, 2003. Changes of functional disability were checked by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS), muscle atrophy was checked by measuring circumference of the thighs, calves, arms, and sensory impairment was checked by a sensory test. Results : 1. Functional disability caused by motor impairment was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment 2. Muscle atrophy was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment 3. Sensory impairment was reduced after the Oriental medical treatment Conclusion : We treated a patient who was diagnosed with polyneuropathy for over 80 days and recorded good effects of Oriental medical treatment on polyneuropathy.

  • Objectives : This study aims to educate clinical doctors of the valuable practice of Manipulative Therapy(MT) as an opportunity for evidence-based medicine. Consequently it also serves to review the effectiveness and safety of MT. Methods : The literature studies of overseas were done by Cochrane Library and Medline website; those of domestic researches were completed by utilizing the sources which are gained from KERIS, KISS, DBpia, Kisti, and domestic institutes related with MT. Results : Eight papers related to the effectiveness of MT were published in South Korea, which concluded with the positive effects of MT. None of them are, however, well-designed randomized controlled trials(RCT). On the other hand, fifteen cases of nine articles indicate the adverse reaction of MT, and numbers of the researches in overseas revealed the side effects of MT in order of cervical, lumbar, and thoracic vertebrae. A vascular adverse reaction such as vertebral and carotid artery dissection was a highly reported cervical adverse reaction; in the thoracic and lumbar regions, neurological adverse reaction in terms of disc hemiation was frequently discovered. Conclusions : Henceforth, highly qualitative studies are required developing the effective outcomes and preventing any possible complications of MT. Therefore, systemic curriculums in institutions and sufficient clinical training in the filed are strongly recommended.
