  • Restless leg syndrome(RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder characterized by a distressing urge to move the legs and triggered by rest or inactivity. It is usually accompanied with insomnia. We experienced two cases of RLS among ischemic stroke patients. They complained uncomfortable sensation in their affected leg and urge to move the leg at night. We treated them with electro-acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine until retiring. As a result, the symptoms including unpleasant sensation or pain, urge to move the leg and insomnia had withdrawn. These cases suggest the possibility that we can treat RLS with oriental medicine, especially in the case which is refractory to conventional medication or shows periodic leg movements during sleep.

  • Mast cells are a potent source of mediators that regulate the inflammatory response in allergic reaction. To evaluate the atopic allergic effect of Asiasari radix(AR), the author investigated a possible effect of AR on mast cell-mediated allergic reaction, cytokines secretion and mRNA expression in vivo and in vitro. In mice orally administered by AR (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 g/kg) for 1 h, compound 48/80-induced ear swelling was significantly reduced (P < 0.05). AR had inhibitory effects on tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-8, and IL-6 secretion from HMC-1. Significant reduced levels of $TNF-{\alpha}$ mRNA was observed in the human mast cell line (HMC-1) with AR (1.0 mg/ml). In addition, AR had no cytotoxic effect on cell viability. These results suggest that AR contributes to the treatment of atopic allergic reactions, and that its action may be due to inhibition of cytokine secretion and mRNA expression in HMC-1.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatments in one patient with traumatic thigh subcutaneous hematoma by traffic accident. Methods : The patient was treated by acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture and cupping for 3 months. Results : After treatments, VAS(visual analog scale) score changed from 10 to 0. MR Imaging showed that the size of subcutaneous hematoma has decreased from $5{\times}11{\times}5.8cm$ to $2.4{\times}3.2{\times}2.6cm$. And the palpation results also showed that the size of subcutaneous hematoma has gotten smaller. Conclusions : Our study suggests that oriental medical treatments such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture and cupping may be effective in traumatic subcutaneous hematoma. More cases of controlled treatments are needed to define the effect of oriental medical treatments for traumatic subcutaneous hematoma.

Hypeventilation syndrome is a kind of psychosomatic disorder. Typical complaints are tachypnea, palpitation, paresthesia, muscle spasm and tetany. We treated the patient with herbal medication, physical therapy, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, etc. In acute hyperventilation attack, we used bloodletting therapy(+宣, shihhsuan), cupping therapy(B40, B57), emergency treatment with paper bag rebreathing and herbal medication in order to tranquilize. After 2 months of oriental medical treatment, we obtained good improvement in patient's state. This results suggest that oriental medical treatment has the positive effects on a patient with hyperventilation syndrome.

This report is about one case of treatment for paraquat poisoning. The patient was hospitalized of Wonkwang university Gwangju Oriental Medical Hospital at the department of Internal Medicine. For 26 days of hospitalization period, the authors supplied gamdutanggami(甘豆湯加味), which consists of Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), Semen Glycine(黑豆), burned powder of Rhizoma rhei(大黃沙炭末), Succus phyllostachyos(竹瀝) and chinese ink(墨汁), decoction of Galla chinensis(五倍子) and Radix glycyrrhizae(甘草), and fluid. And then he showed improvement of condition and returned to a daily life. This report has a limitation for proof of oriental medicine remedial value.
