  • The purpose of this study was to test the effect of the health education on college students. The content of the health education was consisted of significance of health, smoking, alcohol use and sexuality, birth control, exercise and nutrition, chronic illness, contagious disease, stress management. Two groups non-equivalent to pre and post test quasi-experimental research design were used in this study. The total number of subjects were 174 college students who did not have a health related major. The experimental group attended this health education program for 16 weeks and the control group attended other liberal arts and science classes for 16 weeks. Data were analysed with the SPSS window program. The homogeneity between the experimental and the control group pretest data was tested by $X^2$ test and t-test. The differences in stress, self-esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control and health promoting behaviors after the health education were tested with the repeated measure ANOVA. The results were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in general characteristics, stress, self- esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control and health promoting behaviors between the two groups before the health education. 2. There was a significant difference in stress(p= .000) and health promoting behavior (p= .000) between the two groups after the health education. 3. There was no significant difference in self-esteem(p= .531), self-efficacy(p= .110) and locus of control between the two groups after the health education. From the results above, it can be concluded that this health education for the college students was effective to relieve stress and improve health promoting behaviors. The above results suggest that repeated studies are needed for another college students and various health education programs should be developed to promote the health of the populace considering many health related concepts.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study was designed to investigative BMI(body mass index) and health behaviors in college students. Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 189 college women and 125 college men. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from April 1 to April 10, 2005. Data were analyzed by the SPSS /pc 10.0 statistical program using frequency, t-test, $x^2$-test. Result: College women perceived themselves as more obese than indicated their BMI, and the most effective weight control factor was their response to images of people presented in the media. In general college men present more salubrious behavior than college women. Conclusion: The results suggest that health care providers need to educate female students about heathy behavior as well as the normal weight in BMI.

  • In this study, the antibacterial activity of Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) ethanol extract against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Cronobacter sakazakii, and Salmonella Enteritidis was investigated using the spot-on-lawn assay. The results showed that this extract exhibited antibacterial activities against Bacillus cereus (complete inhibition) and Staphylococcus aureus (partial inhibition), but did not inhibit the growth of Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella Enteritidis. This study shows that the Aronia melanocarpa (black chokeberry) ethanol extract was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria. Hence, it is suggested that Aronia melanocarpa could be a useful food supplement, and could be utilized as a naturally derived additive for maintaining the safety of various dairy products. Furthermore, future research should be conducted to examine the possibility of using such products as functional ingredients for improving the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory activities of food products.

  • In order to evaluate the mutagenic potential of Intralipidos produced by Greenmate cooperation. We performed Salmonella typhimurium reversion assay, chromosomal aberration test on chinese hamster ovarian cells and in vivo micronucleus assay using mouse bone marrow cells. In the reverse mutation test using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100, Intralipidos did not increase the number of revertant at any of the concentration tested in this study. Intralipidos did not increase the number of cells having structural or numberical chromosome aberration in cytogenetic test. In mouse micronucleus test, no significant increase were observed in the occurrence of micornucleated polychromatic erythrocytes in ICR male mice intraperitoneally administered with Intralipidos. These results indicate that Intralipidos has no genetic toxicity under these experimental conditions.

  • The goal of community health nursing courses is to prepare student nurses so that they become able to perform a variety of nursing roles in community. To achieve this goal, programs for community health nursing must develop students' abilities to function independently as community health nurses. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Problem-based Learning(PBL) as a teaching method in programs for community health nursing at four-year colleges of nursing. The subjects of this study were senior students at Y University. The study was designed as a descriptive & comparative survey. To determine the effectiveness of PBL, the author analyzed the process and results of teaching. The PBL teaching method was found to be significantly effective in building critical thinking abilities and increasing knowledge. The results also showed that the 43 students who were taught by both PBL and lecture teaching methods got a significantly higher' knowledge score than the other 28 students who were taught only by lectures. As for the future direction of community health nursing courses, a teaching strategy involving both PBL and lectures is recommended.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect subjective symptoms of malocclusion has on the patient's quality of life related to oral health. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted on adults aged 20 years, with a total of 308 copies of the response sheets analyzed. Results: The degree of subjective symptoms of malocclusion was highest in the group of those in their 20s when looked at across different age groups, and those who had a final education of middle school. In addition, the quality of life related to oral health was the highest in middle school graduates and among those in Gyeonggi province. The degree of malocclusion symptom according to oral health behavior was highest in 1-2 weeks of drinking when smoking in a smoking state, and quality of life related to oral health was higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The greater the subjective symptoms of malocclusion, the lower the quality of life related to oral health. Conclusions: It was found that the subjective symptoms of malocclusion decreased quality of life related to oral health. As such, quality of life related to oral health can be improved through aesthetic and functional improvement efforts to decrease the subjective symptoms of malocclusion.
