  • The object of this paper is to determine appropriateness for use of high-strength tensile bar as a tension web member. The gap K-joint of tensile bar types were compared with gap K-joint of square hollow section (SHS) types. For the same width-to-thickness ratio ($2{\gamma}=33.3$ ), tests were performed on four specimens of the SHS type and eight specimens of the tensile bar type. The comparison of capacity with the experimental results showed a capacity of the SHS type joint to be higher than that of the tensile bartype joint for the same brace-to-chord width ratio. Moreover, the capacity of the SHS type joints increased proportionally to the width ratio ${\beta}$), while tensile bar type joints increased as the tension width ratio (${\beta}2$). In failure mode, SHS-type specimens showed local buckling of the compression brace and plastic failure was observed between the tension brace and chord face, and with the tensile bar type specimens there appeared punching shear failure of the chord face at the toe of the connection plate. It is, therefore, concluded that width-to-thickness ratio should be lower than that of the hollow-section type and the relation between tension and compression width ratio should be considered.

  • In order to analyze the high temperature phase formation and the sinterability of super ionic conductor $K^+-{\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ which is commonly used as a solid oxide electrolyte, the pure $K^+-{\beta}/{\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ powder in the ternary system $K_2O-LiO_2-Al_2O_3$ was synthesized by solid state reaction and formed to tube and disk using slip casting method and cold isostatic pressing (CIP), respectively. The slip casting was conducted in an alumina mold with the slurry containing 40 wt% of solid contents and the CIP was carried out under 20 MPa. The samples were sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$, $1700^{\circ}C$ and $1750^{\circ}C$, respectively, and their phase formation and the sintering density were investigated according to the forming method. The samples produced by CIP showed far higher ${\beta}"-Al_2O_3$ fraction as compared with those by slip casting. On the other hand, the samples by slip casting showed slightly higher sintering density. The relative density reached to about 83% at $1750^{\circ}C$ and for 1 h, independent of the forming method. In the case of 90 min socking time, the density was decreased owing to the exaggerated grain growth and the pores by $K_2O$ evaporation.

  • Little information on HUmic-Like Substances (HULIS) in ambient particulate matter has been reported yet in Korea. HULIS makes up a significant fraction of the water-soluble organic mass in the atmospheric aerosols and influence their water uptake properties. In this study 24-hr $PM_{2.5}$ samples were collected between December 2013 and October 2014 at an urban site in Gwangju and analyzed for organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble OC (WSOC), HULIS, and ionic species, to investigate possible sources and formation processes of HULIS. HULIS was separated using solid phase extraction method and quantified by total organic carbon analyzer. During the study period, HULIS concentration ranged from 0.19 to $5.65{\mu}gC/m^3$ with an average of $1.83{\pm}1.22{\mu}gC/m^3$, accounting for on average 45% of the WSOC (12~ 73%), with higher in cold season than in warm season. Strong correlation of WSOC with HULIS ($R^2=0.91$) indicates their similar chemical characteristics. On the basis of the relationships between HULIS and a variety of chemical species (EC, $K^+$, $NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, and oxalate), it was postulated that HULIS observed during summer and winter were likely attributed to secondary formation and primary emissions from biomass burning (BB) and traffics. Stronger correlation of HULIS with $K^+$, which is a BB tracer, in winter ($R^2=0.81$) than in summer ($R^2=0.66$), suggests more significant contribution of BB emissions in winter to the observed HULIS. It is interesting to note that BB emissions may also have an influence on the HULIS in summer, but further study using levoglucosan that is a unique organic marker of BB emissions is required during summer. Higher correlation between HULIS and oxalate, which is mainly formed through cloud processing and/or photochemical oxidation processes, was found in the summer ($R^2=0.76$) than in the winter ($R^2=0.63$), reflecting a high fraction of secondary organic aerosol in the summer.

  • A number of disinfection by-products (DBPs) are formed as a result of the addition of chlorine into the public water supply and some of them have been suggested to cause adverse health effects on humans. However, the estimation of human ingestion exposure to each DBP has been performed simply by multiplying the concentration of a chemical in the cold tap water by the volume of water consumed during a given period of time. However, a questionnaire concerning water consumptions administered to sixty people residing in Chunchon showed that the volume of tap water consumed accounted for approximately 70% of the total volume of water consumed and that of heated water represented approximately 94% of tap water ingested. Heating durations for water-containing foods (e. g., soups and pot stews) and heated beverages (e. g., barley tea) were grouped into 10, 20, 30, and 35 minutes. Based on these time frames, an aluminum pot containing one liter of tap water was heated for the above respective time periods using a gas range to determine the variations of the concentrations of individual DBPs by heating. The pH and total residual chlorine were measured before and after heating. Collected water samples were carried to the laboratory and analyzed for eight DBPs and total organic carbon. Chloroform, bromodichloromethane, chloral hydrate, 1, 2-dichloro-2-propanone, 1, 1, 1-trichloropropanone, and dichloroacetonitrile were not detected following heating for 10 minutes and longer. The concentration of dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) was elevated with heating duration, resulting in the averages of 2.0, 3.1, 4.7, and 12 times the initial concentration, respectively, for 10, 20, 30, and 35 minute heating periods. On the other hand, the concentration of trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) decreased with heating duration, with 0.65, 0.40, 0.34, and 0.19 times lower than the initial concentration. Therefore, it is suggested that ingestion exposure to DCAA increases with heating duration but that ingestion exposure to TCAA decreases. In addition, while the amount of DCAA was elevated at the initial time periods (10 or 20 minutes) and then slowly decreased, that of TCAA was rapidly decreased. In conclusion, water-heating processes during cooking influence the concentrations of individual DBPs in the tap water, with lower levels for volatile DBPs and TCAA, and higher levels for DCAA. Therefore, concentration change needs to be taken into consideration in the estimation of human ingestion exposure to DBPs.

  • Using the data observed on the Oshoro-maru from November 4 to November 12, 1989 in the East China Sea, the oceanographic conditions were investigated. The results are as follows: The oceanographic condition of surface layer was divided into two regions. One was the Tsushima Current Waters and the other was the China Coastal Waters. The oceanic front was formed between above two waters. Tsushima Current Waters had high temperature ranging 22~24$^{\circ}C$, high salinity ranging 33.5~34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O less than 4.5ml/l. And China Coastal Waters had low temperature ranging 18~2$0^{\circ}C$, low salinity less than 23.0$\textperthousand$ and high D.O ranging 4.0~5.0ml/l. In the case of the bottom layer, Tsushima Current Waters and China Coastal Waters appeared the same as the surface layer. In addition, the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Waters and the Southern Bottom Waters of East China Sea distributed together with two surface waters above. The was temperature ranging 15~19$^{\circ}C$, salinity 34.5$\textperthousand$ and low D.O ranging 2.0~3.5ml/l and that was temperature less than 1$0^{\circ}C$, salinity less than 33.3$\textperthousand$ and high D,O greater than 4.5ml/l. The waters of intermediate characteristics between China Coastal Waters and Tsushima Current Waters seem to be resulted from the mixing occurred between the above tow waters, and it had temperature of 20.5~22.$0^{\circ}C$, salinity of 32.3~33.3$\textperthousand$.

  • A layer of salinity-minimum which characterizes the East Sea intermediate Water (ESIW) is found at an approximate depth of 200 m in three CTD section taken in the Ulleung Basin on May 17-21, 1988. Properties at this layer vary in ranges of $1.1^{\circ}C except at stations near the east coast of Korea where temperature is as high as $4.39^{\circ}C$ and salinity is as low as $33.992{\textperthousand}$. To be distinguished from the ESIW the East Sea Proper Water (ESPW) may be characterized by temperature less than $1^{\circ}C$, Salinity at the saliently-minimum layer and 500db increases southward in general, implying that the cold waters, both ESIW and ESPW, formed in the northern basin of the East Sea are spreading southward below the permanent thermocline in the basin. Hydrography in the Ulleung Basin is very similar to that in the Alboran Sea, suggesting a possibility of an anticyclonic circulation in the Ulleung Basin which is controlled strongly by the shoaling bottom.

  • The objective of this study is to establish an efficient celll culture system for somatic embryogenesis in Ostericum koreanum and Angelica purpuraefolia. The highest frequency of embryogenic callus on immature seeds of O. konanum and A, purpuraefolia. was obtained when seeds were cultured on MS medium containing 0.1 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1 mg/L BA. However somatic embryos were formed directly from the edge of cotyledon and hypocotyl of plant which regenerated on medium supplemented with 0.1-3.0 mg/L NAA. Immature seed explane cultured at 25$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$ after 10 days treatment at 5$^{\circ}C$ produced embryogenic callus and somatic embryos, and these differentiated into whole plane. Addition of glutamine and coconut milk to media did not enhance the frequency of somatic embryogenesis in immature seed cultures of A. purpuraefolia. However in immature seed culture of O. koreanum, the frequency of somatic embryogenesis were increased on media supplemented with glutamine and 10% coconut milk. Especially addition of glutamine to the medium substituted effect of NH$_4$N0$_3$ in constast to coconut milk. The highest frequency of conversion somatic embryos into plantlet was 89.1% on MS basal medium Embryogenic calli were grown vigorously when maintained on medium with 0.01 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.01 mg/L BA.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in-plane bending moment for T-joints made of cold-formed square hollow steel sections. In the previous studies, the T-joint was shown not to have an obvious peak load, and the failure mode was the main chord flange failure at the branch-width-to-chord-width ratio ($\beta$) of below 0.71. Based on the experimental results, including the tests conducted by Zhao, the deformation limit of 1% B was proposed for ${16.7{\leq}2{\gamma}(=B/T){\leq}33}$ and ${0.34{\leq}{\beta}(=b_{1}/B){\leq}0.71}$. Then, the ultimate in-plane bending strength was shown to be Mu=1.5${\cdot}$M1% B. The existing strength formulae for the original T-joint were investigated and were determined to be the main chord flange failure for the branch-squared T-joint. The bending strength formulae of CIDECT and other researchers were compared with the test results. Finally, a reasonably good agreement with Zhao's formula was found. Therefore, the design guidelines were presented based on Zhao's strength formula for T-joints.

  • Laser surface Melting Process is getting hardening layer that has enough depth of hardening layer as well as no defects by melting surface of substrate. This study used CW(Continuous Wave) Yb:YAG and STD11. Laser beam speed, power and beam interval are fixed at 70mm/sec, 2.8kW and 800um respectively. Hardness in the weld zone are equal to 400Hv regardless of melting zone, remelting zone overlapped by next beam and HAZ. Similarly, microstructures in all weld zone consist of dendrite structure that arm spacing is $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$, matrix is ${\gamma}$(Austenite) and dendrite boundary consists of ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$ of eutectic phase. This microstructure crystallizes from liquid to ${\gamma}$ of primary crystal and residual liquid forms ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$ of eutectic phase by eutectic reaction at $1266^{\circ}C$. After solidification is complete, primary crystal and eutectic phase remain at room temperature without phase transformation by quenching. On the other hand, microstructures of substrate consist of ferrite, fine $M_{23}C_6$ and coarse $M_7C_3$ that have 210Hv. Microstructures in the HAZ consist of fine $M_{23}C_6$ and coarse $M_7C_3$ like substrate. But, $M_{23}C_6$ increases and matrix was changed from ferrite to bainite that has hardness above 400Hv. Partial Melted Zone is formed between melting zone and HAZ. Partial Melted Zone near the melting zone consists of ${\gamma}$, $M_7C_3$ and martensite and Partial Melted Zone near the HAZ consists of eutectic phase around ${\gamma}$ and $M_7C_3$. Hardness is maximum 557Hv in the partial melted zone.

  • The structure and evolution of a thunderstorm outflow in two dimensions with no environmental wind are investigated using a cloud-resolving model with explicit liquid-ice phase microphysical processes (ARPS: Advanced Regional Prediction System). The turbulence structure of the outflow is explicitly resolved with a high-resolution grid size of 50m. The simulated single-cell storm and its associated Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) billows are found to have the lift stages of development maturity, and decay. The secondary pulsation and splitting of convective cells resulted from interactions between cloud dynamics and microphysics are observed. The cooled downdrafts caused by the evaporation of rain and hail in the relatively dry lower atmosphere result in thunderstorm cold-air outflow. The outflow head propagates with almost constant speed. The KH billows formed by the KH instability cause turbulence mixing from the top of the outflow and control the structure of the outflow. Ihe KH billows are initiated at the outflow head, and pow and decay as moving rearward relative to the gust front. The numerical simulation results of the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the fastest growing perturbation to the critical shear-layer depth and the ratio of the horizontal wavelength of the billow to its maximum amplitude are matched well with the results of other studies.
