A long-term trend analysis of cold water masses along eastern coast of South Korea was performed during summer, based on wind speed, wind direction, and sea surface temperature (SST) data. Wind data collected over a 22-year period (1997-2011) were compared with another set of data collected over the successive 7-year (2012-2018), highlighting a general decrease in the frequency and speed of south winds. However, both the frequency and speed of these winds have been higher in June between 2012-2018, rather than between 1997-2011. The cold water season between July and August was faster during the 7-year period; moreover, the SSTs registered around Gangneung (EN) rose by $0.5^{\circ}C- 1.8^{\circ}C$, while those around Yeongdeok (EC) and Gijang (ES) increased by only $0.1^{\circ}C-0.3^{\circ}C$. The number of cold water days during the 7-year period, compared to those recorded during previous years (1990-2011, satellite SST data by NOAA/AVHRR), decreased in the proximity of Yeongdeok and Gijang, but increased in the proximity of Kangneung. Additionally, the number of cold water days around Kangneung, Yeongdeok, and Gijang increased in June highlighting a geographical and temporal change in the occurrence of cold waters. These observation can be explained by variations in the pressure distribution that should have weakened the East Asian monsoon, affecting the direction and speed of winds that regulate the flow of cold waters.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) systems utilize the temperature difference between the surface water and deep ocean water to generate electrical energy. In addition to ocean surface waves, wind and current, in certain locations like the Andaman Sea, Sulu Sea and the South China Sea the presence of strong internal waves may become a concern in floating OTEC system design. The current paper focuses on studying the dependence of the CWP hydrodynamic drag on relative velocity of the flow around the pipe, the effect of drag amplification due to vortex induced vibrations and the influence of internal waves on the floating semi and the cold water pipe integrated OTEC system. Two CWP sizes are modeled; the 4m diameter pipe represents a small scale prototype and the 10m diameter pipe represents a full commercial size CWP. are considered in the study.

A probabilistic approach may be adopted to predict freeze and thaw depths to account for the variability of (1) material properties, and (2) contemporary and future surface energy input parameters(e.g. air temperatures, cloud cover, snow cover) predicted with global climate models. To illustrate the probabilistic approach, an example of the predicted of thaw depths in cold regions is considered. More specifically, the Stefan equation is used together with the Monte Carlo simulation technique to make a probabilistic prediction of thaw penetration. The simulation results indicate that the variability in material properties, surface energy input parameters and temperature data can lead to significant uncertainty in predicting thaw penetration.

In this study, meteorological characteristics concerning the occurrence of fog are analyzed using 4-years $(2000\~2003)$ data at Chuncheon and the probability of prediction is investigated. From the analysis of meteorological characteristics, the fog at Chuncheon occurred before sunrise time and disappeared after that time and lasted for $2\~4$ hours. When fog occurred, on the whole, wind direction was blew the northerly and wind speed was below 2.1m/s. Especially, about $42\%$ of foggy day fell on the calm $(0\~0.2\;ms^{-1})$ conditions. The difference between air temperature and dew point temperature near the surface were mainly less than $2^{\circ}C$. For the lack of water surface temperature, the water surface temperature was calculated by using Water Quality River Reservoir System (WQRRS) and then it was used as the surface boundary condition of MM5. The numerical experiment was carried out for 2 days from 1300 LST on 14 October 2003 to 1300 LST on 16 October 2003 and fog was simulated at dawn on 15 and 16 October 2003. Simulated air temperature and dew point temperature indicate the similar tendency to observation and the simulated difference between air temperature and dew point temperature has also the similar tendency within $2^{\circ}C$. Thus, the occurrence of fog is well simulated in the terms of the difference between air temperature and dew point temperature. Horizontal distribution of the difference between air temperature and dew point temperature from the numerical experiment indicates occurrence, dissipation and lasting time of fog at Chuncheon. In Chuncheon, there is close correlation between the frequency of fog day and outflow from Soyang reservoir and high frequency of occurrence due to the difference between air and cold outlet water temperature.

In the southeast sea of Korea, the cold water is concentrated in every summer, showing in abnormal oceanic conditions. Cold water occurred in the southeast sea is dominantly influenced by wind, which occurs when the south wind is continuously blowing for 3 to 7 days more. In this study, water temperature, wind speed and direction data of KMA, KHOA and KHNP, Chlorophyll-a of COMS/GOCI, GHRSST Level 4 SST of NASA, and red tide alert data of the National Institute of Fisheries Science were used to analyze the correlation between occurrence and change of the cold water and the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The upwelling cold water mass showed a characteristic of moving northward along the current and occurrence a high concentration of chlorophyll along the water mass. Also, when the warm current were strong, the characteristic of red tide showed a northward moving.

For the successful cold starting of a fuel cell engine, either internal of external heat supply must be made to overcome the formation of ice from water below the freezing point of water. In the present study, switchable vanadium oxide compounds as variable temperature-electrical resistance materials onto the surface of flat metallic bipolar plates have been prepared by a dip-coating technique via an aqueous sol-gel method. Subsequently, the chemical composition and micro-structure of the polycrystalline solid thin films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. In addition, it was carefully measured electrical resistance hysteresis loop over a temperature range from $-20^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ using the four-point probe method. The experimental results revealed that the thin films was mainly composed of Karelianite $V_2O_3$ which acts as negative temperature coefficient materials. Also, it was found that thermal dissipation rate of the vanadium oxide thin films partially satisfy about 50% saving of the substantial amount of energy required for ice melting at $-20^{\circ}C$. Moreover, electrical resistances of the vanadium-based materials converge on an extremely small value similar to that of pure flat metallic bipolar plates at higher temperature, i.e. $T{\geq}40^{\circ}C$. As a consequence, experimental studies proved that it is possible to apply the variable temperature-electrical resistance material based on vanadium oxides for the cold starting enhancement of a fuel cell vehicle and minimize parasitic power loss and eliminate any necessity for external equipment for heat supply in freezing conditions.

In order to obtain the initial starting sample having a random texture and fine grains, aluminum alloy 3103 sheets were repeatedly deformed by CCSS up to six passages and subsequently annealed at $300^{\circ}C$ for 1h. These samples were cold rolled at room temperature and also warm rolled at $250^{\circ}C$. Changes in rolling temperature gave rise to the different texture evolution. Warm rolling led to the pronounced texture gradients comprising the shear texture at the surface and the rolling texture at the sheet center. The formation of the rolling texture components, i.e., the ${\beta}$-fiber, was promoted by cold rolling than warm rolling.

Experimental test results of field construction, Cheongju University Educational Liberal Art Building, applying the insulating curing method on slab concrete showed that the quality of concrete in fresh and hardened state satisfied all target values. Temperature history of slab concrete in A and B area secured more than $7.8{\sim}9.2^{\circ}C$ higher than outside atmosphere. After completing certain curing period of time on the surface of the structure, crack occurrence was not found. It is concluded that the preventing vaporization of moisture by the insulating curing method reduces plastic and drying shrinkage as welt as improves durability.
Harmonics of sea surface temperature (SST) in the East Sea and their possible causes are examined by analyzing NOAA/AVHRR data, SSM/I wind speeds, NSCAT wind vectors, and NCEP heat flux data. Detailed spatial structures of amplitudes and phases of the seasonal cycles and their contributions to the total variance of SST have quantitatively. The Subpolar front serves as a boundary between regions of high annual amplitudes (${\geq}$10$^{\circ}$C) in the cold continental region and low amplitudes (${\leq}$10$^{\circ}$C) in the Tsushima Warm Current region. The low phase center of annual cycle is located over a seamount at 132.2$^{\circ}$E, 41.7$^{\circ}$N south of Vladivostok. Semi-annual amplitudes are significantly large leaching over 20% of the annual amplitudes in the Tatarskiy Strait and along the continental shelf off Russian coast in fall and spring, but its forcings are substantially annual. We have shown that fall cooling is attributed by direct and local wind forcing, while spring cooling is remotely forced by cold waters from sea ices in the Tatarskiy Strait.
Oceanic temperature inversions, with unstable stratifications, are frequently founed in the surface layer of a few tens meters in the Japan Sea and the Yellow Sea in Winter. Mechanisms responsible for the generation of temperature inversions include the followings: (1) The nat heat loss at the sea suface requires an upward transport of heat from the interior of the ocean y convection, and this convection leads to the temperature inversions. (2) The downward propagation of the annual variation of the sea surface timperature, with an exponential decrease of amplitude and a linear change of phase with depth, generates the surface inversion layer in winter. (3) The cold water cdvection by Ekman drift, of which magnitude decreases exponentially with depth, generates temperature inversions for the three possible mechanisms mentioned above.
