  • A direct application of liquefied gas propellants to a typical small satellite cold gas propulsion system was analyzed. Performance of systems using liquefied gas propellant under consideration was compared to that of a nitrogen cold gas propulsion system. Liquefied gas propellant propulsion system's performance, required tank volume, and required propulsion system mass has been calculated at the same mass, volume, and total impulse condition of a typical nitrogen cold gas propulsion system. It was found that the liquefied gas propulsion system has advantages in performance, volume, and mass, compared to a typical nitrogen cold gas system, and can be directly applied to a cold gas propulsion system.

  • In this study, we analyzed flow characteristics of micro-nozzles for basic research to develop micro propulsion system. Cold gas propulsion system was used, and micro-nozzles having nozzle throat diameters of 1.0, 0.5, 0.25 mm were fabricated with EDM method. Thrust was measured through the use of plate-spring and strain gage based thrust measurement system, and flow characteristics of micro-nozzles were analyzed under ambient condition and vacuum condition. We used argon and nitrogen gases as propellant, and compared experimental results with CFD analysis. From the result, we verified the flow losses of viscosity and back-pressure caused by minimization of nozzle.

  • Miniaturization of subsystems including propulsion systems is recent trends in spacecraft technology. Small space vehicle propulsion is not only a technological challenge of a scaling system down, but also a combination of fundamental flow/combustion constraints. In this paper, physical constraints of micronozzle for cold gas micro-thruster are reviewed and discussed. Method to measure small thrust are also described.

  • Recently, a validation research of maneuvering and attitude control logics of a spacecraft under a ground condition is getting increase by using operating simulators with compact and precise components. For that, a cold gas propulsion system is generally used for maneuvering and attitude control of spacecraft ground simulators for its simplicity and a high reliability. In the present study, major design parameters of a cold gas propulsion system are derived to meet mission requirements based on conceptual design results of a simulator. And additionally, commercial components with proper specifications are selected for system assembly.

  • In order to inject satellites into a target orbit, launch vehicles should have a precise attitude and control system capable of controlling three axises of pitch, yaw and roll. For launch vehicles, there are two types of attitude control system currently in popular use; the first one is a cold gas method, and the other is a liquid propulsion system using a single and dual property propellant. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of thrust control system using said propellant, thereby providing for a rationale for its application to the upper stages of launch vehicles, in terms of the simplicity of the system, economics of structure and operation.

  • In this study, we designed cold gas propulsion system with minimum 0.25 mm nozzle and micro-thrust measurement system to analyze flow characteristic of micro propulsion system in ambient and vacuum condition. Argon and Nitrogen are used for propellant and the result of experiments is compared with CFD analysis and theory. But there is a point where reduced scale versions of conventional propulsion systems will no longer be practical. Therefore, a fundamentally different approach to propulsion systems was taken. That is thermal transpiration based micro propulsion system. It has no moving parts such as lubricants, pressurizing system and can pump the gaseous propellant by temperature gradient only(cold to hot). We are advancing basic research of propulsion system based on thermal transpiration in vacuum conditions and had tried experiment process and theoretical access in advance. To characterize membrane of Knudsen pump, we select Polyimide material that has low thermal conductivity(0.29 W/mK) and can stand high temperature($300^{\circ}C$) for long time. And we fabricated hole diameter 1, 0.5, 0.2, 0.1 mm using precision manufacturing. Experimental results show that pressure gradient efficiency of Knudsen pump is increased to maximum 82% according to Knudsen number and thick membranes are more effective than thin membranes in transition flow regime.

  • In general, such ground based methods are utilized to validate maneuvering and attitude control logics of a spacecraft by a simulation with a flight software at a design phase and a integrated function test with actual hardwares at a system level. Recently, varification researches using operating simulators are getting increase using compact and precise components under a ground condition. The present paper investigates and summarized the development trend of cold gas propulsion systems for the spacecraft simulators and their major performance characteristics to derive fundamental data which are necessary for a conceptual design of the simulator.

  • A nonlinear pressure controller to actively regulate the thrust of a solid propulsion system is presented. To compensate for the parametric uncertainties with respect to the chamber pressure induced by changing nozzle throat area, Lyapunov-based parameter adaptation method has been applied. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method, the experiments were carried out using the cold gas test equipment that can simulate the operating environment of variable thrust solid propulsion system. The experiment results show that the nonlinear pressure controller has better performance than conventional P and PI controller.

  • A cold-flow test equipment was designed to carry out the performance verification of TDACS. For that purpose, the pressure dynamics in the solid rocket motor combustor and the cold-flow test was modeled, and the response time showing the dynamic characteristics of each model was obtained. In this paper, the system response time of the cold-flow test was designed to be equal to that of the motor, making the dynamic response in cold-flow and hot gas condition to be similar.
