  • When fresh concrete is exposed to low temperature, the concrete may suffer from the frost damage at early ages and the strength development may be delayed. To solve such problems of cold weather concreting admixtures called agent for enduring cold climate are developed to prevent the fresh concrete from being frozen at early ages. In this study, the experiments are carried out on several kinds of agent for enduring cold climate to present their performance. According to experimental results, most kinds of agent for enduring cold climate show the strength development in the range $-5^{\circ}C$ of curing temperature, it tends to be delayed at long term maturity without agents for enduring cold climate. while it gains high strength maturity when agents for enduring cold climate is applied.

  • In this paper an finite element approach for the edge crack analysis of silicon-steel sheet during cold rolling is presented. Based on the damage mechanics, the proposed approach follows the analysis steps which are composed of damage initiation, damage evolution and fracture. Through those steps, we can find out the initiation instant of crack and resulting propagated length and shape of the crack. The material constants related to fracture is experimentally obtained by tension tests using standard sheet-type specimen and notched sheet-type specimen. To evaluate the prediction accuracy, we performed a pilot rolling test with a initially notched sheets. It is shown that the results obtained by the approach converged to the experimental one concerning about the direction and length of propagated crack. The capability of the proposed one is demonstrated through the application to the actual silicon-steel rolling mill.

  • The potential damage region of a WC-Co cemented carbide die is investigated for cold forging process of a wheel-nut by numerical simulation with its chemical composition considered. Numerical simulation is utilized to calculate internal stress, especially for the WC-Co die, during the forging process. Finite element model is established, in which the elasto-plastic properties are applied to the work-piece of bulk steel, and elastic properties are considered for the lower die insert of the WC-Co alloy. This stress analysis enables to distinguish the potential damage regions of the WC-Co die. The regions from calculation are comparatively analyzed along with the crack area observed in the die after repetitive manufacturing. Effect of chemical composition of the WC-Co is also evaluated on characteristics of potential damage region of the die with variance of mechanical properties considered. Derived from Mohr-Coulomb fracture model, furthermore, a new stress index is presented and used for die stress analysis. This index inherently considers hydrostatic pressure and is then capable of deducing wide range of its distribution for representing stress state by modification of its parameter implying pressure sensitivity.

  • One-year-old seedlings of open-pollinated progenies of pitch-loblolly hybrid pine plus trees were selected for cold-hardiness during cold winter of 1983-1984. Survived trees were planted in three locations. Two years later, the ratio of cold-damaged trees and 3rd year heights were recorded. The ratio of the, cold-damage trees among screened progenies were 5.6% in Kyunggi and 22.6% in Chungnam, while 9.3% and 43.3%, respectively, in unscreened control plot. Severely damaged families at one-year-old seedling stage also suffered heavy cold damage after two years. Not much differences were observed between families in 3rd year height.

  • BACKGROUND: The buds of persimmon trees are susceptible to cold damage, often with the late frost, at the time of budburst. This study was conducted to determine effect of the cold damage on shoot and fruit growth the current season. METHODS AND RESULTS: 'Fuyu' trees, grown in 50-L pots, were placed for 1 h at $-2.2{\pm}0.5$, $-2.6{\pm}0.5$, or $-3.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ within a cold storage, at their budburst on April 5. Some trees under ambient temperature at $10-17^{\circ}C$ served as the control. Cold damage of the buds containing flower buds was 54% at $-2.2^{\circ}C$, and significantly increased to 95% at $-3.0^{\circ}C$. The bud damage included the complete death of all, complete death of main buds only, or the late and deformed shoot growth in the spring. Number of flower buds in early May dramatically decreased as the damage ratio increased. Since the thinning of flower buds in mid-May and fruitlets in early July was done in no or slightly damaged trees, the final number of fruits and yield did not decrease compared with the control when the damage increased by 60% and 70%, respectively. Average fruit weight and skin coloration tended to be better with increasing bud damage. Shoot growth was more vigorous in those trees whose buds were severely damaged by low temperature. CONCLUSION(S): Shoot growth and the yield may depend on the number of flower buds and percent fruit set after the cold damage.

  • The use of aluminum alloy parts in the automotive industry has been increasing recently due to its low weight compared with steel to improve fuel efficiency. Companies in the auto parts' manufacturing sector are expected to meet the government's strict environmental regulations. In this study, manufacturing process of aluminum alloy bolt has been designed from forming to heat treatment. Bolt forming process is composed of cold forging for body and rolling for thread. In this study only cold forging process is considered by employing the finite element method. In the cold forging process, preform shape was designed and damage value was considered for die design. Two steps of forging process has been developed by the simulation and a prototype was manugactured accordingly. As a final process, solution heat treatment and aging process was employed. A final prototype was found to meet the required specifications of tensile strength and dimension.

  • This study was conducted to develop proper model for cold storage facility that could of for uniform heat movement and air movement f3r green grocery and improve improper design of the existing container-type cold storage facility. For that reason, new model(dome-type) cold storage facility was developed using 3-D CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation. The size was 6m${\times}$6m${\times}$5m. Its size and configuration were same to simulation model. Unit cooler was designed to send cold air in 4 side ways. A dome-type cold storage facility showed uniform distributions of air temperature and velocity because cold air was forced to move down along the ceiling and the wall and then circulated to the unit cooler from the central part of the floor. Dome-type cold storage facility also showed by low wind velocity, below 1 m/s that could minimized cold damage and quality deterioration.

  • Spur Gear parts for automobile actuators using existing former forging technology were produced in a total of three processes on a former forging machine. However, in order to improve cost increase due to frequent mold breakage, Spur Gear parts were designed and manufactured in the cold forging process after forming the preform through former forging. In other words, in the existing former forging mold, product seating defects occurred due to horizontal movement, resulting in many product defects and mold damage, so there was an urgent need to improve mold life and product defects. In order to improve this, we tried to improve the mold life by improving the existing 3 former forging processes to a former forging process and 2 cold forging processes. Therefore, We developed Spur Gear parts for automobile actuators were developed by applying precision cold forging technology through a former forging process and 2 cold forging processes to improve mold life.

  • This study investigated the aspects of damage due to low temperature treatment in order to establish the damage criterion according to low temperature invasion during regeneration period in wheat after regeneration period in the early spring. We cultivated wheat cultivar 'Geumgang' in Wagner pots and treated them with three types of low temperature, and the gradual temperature change program was set in a low temperature incubator for 12.5 h per day for 5 days during the night time when the length of young spikes was about 1 mm. All treatments except for the control were treated in 5 steps for each temperature. Treatment 1 was treated at the lowest temperature $-5^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, treatment 2 for 7 h at $-5^{\circ}C$, and treatment 3 for 9 h at $-5^{\circ}C$. The most common type of damage was partial infertility, and there were some discolored spikes. The damage rate of wheat spikes treated at $-5^{\circ}C$ for 9 h was the highest, while the damage rates of wheat sprouts treated at 5h and 7h were not different from each other. It was found that the damage of wheat spikes exposed to low temperatures for a long time was large. It is necessary to investigate the aspects of spike damage by duration days of low temperature.
