Classification of Mental States Based on Spatiospectral Patterns of Brain Electrical Activity

  • Classification of human thought is an emerging research field that may allow us to understand human brain functions and further develop advanced brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. In the present study, we introduce a new approach to classify various mental states from noninvasive electrophysiological recordings of human brain activity. We utilized the full spatial and spectral information contained in the electroencephalography (EEG) signals recorded while a subject is performing a specific mental task. For this, the EEG data were converted into a 2D spatiospectral pattern map, of which each element was filled with 1, 0, and -1 reflecting the degrees of event-related synchronization (ERS) and event-related desynchronization (ERD). We evaluated the similarity between a current (input) 2D pattern map and the template pattern maps (database), by taking the inner-product of pattern matrices. Then, the current 2D pattern map was assigned to a class that demonstrated the highest similarity value. For the verification of our approach, eight participants took part in the present study; their EEG data were recorded while they performed four different cognitive imagery tasks. Consistent ERS/ERD patterns were observed more frequently between trials in the same class than those in different classes, indicating that these spatiospectral pattern maps could be used to classify different mental states. The classification accuracy was evaluated for each participant from both the proposed approach and a conventional mental state classification method based on the inter-hemispheric spectral power asymmetry, using the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). An average accuracy of 68.13% (${\pm}9.64%$) was attained for the proposed method; whereas an average accuracy of 57% (${\pm}5.68%$) was attained for the conventional method (significance was assessed by the one-tail paired $t$-test, $p$ < 0.01), showing that the proposed simple classification approach might be one of the promising methods in discriminating various mental states.

차량 정보 시스템의 설계를 위한 인간공학적 연구 및 가이드라인 고찰 (A Review of Ergonomic Researches for Designing In-Vehicle Information Systems)

  • Objective: This study is to provide a foundation for developing comprehensive ergonomic design guidelines for in-vehicle information systems (IVIS) by giving an overview of existing researches as well as setting further research directions. Background: The drivers get much more information recently while interacting with new safety functions of the cars. To avoid cognitive overload of the drivers, IVIS should be deigned appropriately by considering various human factors and task conditions. Method: We gathered, analyzed, and summarized ergonomic researches concerned with IVIS design conducted inside and outside Korea according to a categorization system proposed in the study. Frequency analysis was conducted for figuring out what kind of issues took major part of the researches, and their trends across time and regions. Results: Compared to domestic researches, those done in overseas tend to deal with more variety of independent, dependent and extraneous variables. The overseas researches also showed a tendency to get ahead in making ergonomic guidelines for IVIS design by adapting and integrating the results from previous researches. Conclusion and Application: There have been many researches regarding with ergonomic IVIS design, but some of their results became old-fashioned as the technology evolved. Not many researches have considered diverse human factors regarding the drivers' characteristics except age and gender. It is expected that researchers and designers take advantage of this study to find and review relevant results and set out issues of their own for more progressive researches of the field.

Validation of a Cognitive Task Simulation and Rehearsal Tool for Open Carpal Tunnel Release

  • Background Carpal tunnel release is one of the most common surgical procedures performed by hand surgeons. The authors created a surgical simulation of open carpal tunnel release utilizing a mobile and rehearsal platform app. This study was performed in order to validate the simulator as an effective training platform for carpal tunnel release. Methods The simulator was evaluated using a number of metrics: construct validity (the ability to identify variability in skill levels), face validity (the perceived ability of the simulator to teach the intended material), content validity (that the simulator was an accurate representation of the intended operation), and acceptability validity (willingness of the desired user group to adopt this method of training). Novices and experts were recruited. Each group was tested, and all participants were assigned an objective score, which served as construct validation. A Likert-scale questionnaire was administered to gauge face, content, and acceptability validity. Results Twenty novices and 10 experts were recruited for this study. The objective performance scores from the expert group were significantly higher than those of the novice group, with surgeons scoring a median of 74% and medical students scoring a median of 45%. The questionnaire responses indicated face, content, and acceptability validation. Conclusions This mobile-based surgical simulation platform provides step-by-step instruction for a variety of surgical procedures. The findings of this study help to demonstrate its utility as a learning tool, as we confirmed construct, face, content, and acceptability validity for carpal tunnel release. This easy-to-use educational tool may help bring surgical education to a new- and highly mobile-level.

집중력 회복을 위한 감각 모달리티 별 피드백에 대한 연구 (A research on feedback effect according to different sensory modality for attention recovery)

  • 한정된 주의력 자원을 회복시키기 위한 방법 중 피드백이 효과가 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 그러나 피드백의 구체적 내용에 대한 집중력 회복의 연구는 미미하다. 본 연구는 집중력을 회복할 수 있는 감각적 자극 중 정서적 피드백 간의 효과 차이를 분석 하였다. 집중력을 평가하기위한 온라인 실험 시스템을 구축하고 시각, 청각, 촉각 피드백 자극을 제시하여 각각의 감각자극과 집중력 회복의 효과를 분석 하였다. 실험 참여자의 감각 피드백의 선호도에 따른 영향 요인을 알아보기 위하여 실험 후 주관적 설문을 실시하였다. 감각 피드백을 6명의 대학원생에게 일주일에 걸쳐 반복적으로 약200개의 자극을 제시하고 5회 이상 실험을 통하여 얻어진 30회 결과를 분석하였다. 결과적으로 피드백 효과가 집중력 회복에 통계적 유의함을 알 수 있었다.

과학적 창의성 향상을 위한 가족활동(FAISC) 프로그램의 개발과 적용 (Development and Application of the Family Activity for Improving Scientific Creativity (FAISC) Program)

  • 본 연구에서는 과학적 창의성 향상을 위한 가족활동(FAISC) 프로그램을 개발하여 실질적인 목적에서 프로그램 내용을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 그리고 연구에 참여한 가족구성원들의 프로그램에 대한 반응과 적용 중에 나타난 특성을 분석하였다. 설문 결과, 가정에서 수행하기에 과제가 흥미로웠고, 난이도는 약간 어려웠으나, 과제에 제시된 안내가 과제 해결에 도움을 주었다고 응답하였다. 또한 과제 해결 후 과학적 창의성이 향상되었다고 응답하였다. 비디오 촬영 및 면담 분석 결과, 가족 구성원들이 과제를 수행하고 평가하는 과정에서 여러 가지 긍정적인 측면들이 관찰되었다. 특히 인지적 측면 이외에 가족구성원 사이의 대화와 합의의 과정 그리고 즐겁게 참여하는 모습도 관찰되었다. 일부 관찰된 부정적인 반응을 통해서는 추후 보다 효과적인 적용을 위해 고려할 점이 무엇인지 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 과제 수행 결과에 대한 가족구성원들의 채점 점수가 전문가 채점 점수와 상관이 높은 것으로 나타나, 가족들이 스스로 FAISC를 평가하는 데에도 무리가 없을 것으로 판단되었다.

조현병 환자들의 일상적 의사결정 과정에서 무쾌감증 및 자아존중감의 영향 (Influence of Anhedonia and Self-Esteem on Daily-Life Decision-Making in Patients with Schizophrenia)

  • Objectives Decision-making in patients with schizophrenia has been known to be inefficient in both cognitive and affective aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of anhedonia and self-esteem on the decision-making process in schizophrenia. Methods Twenty patients with schizophrenia and 21 healthy controls performed the 'apparel purchase decision-making task', during which they were asked to respond to the preference, fitness, and price suitability, before making the final purchase decision. Generalized estimating equation and correlation analysis were conducted to explore for the difference of decision making patterns and influential factors between the two groups. Results The patients showed lower odds ratio (OR) of the fitness on the apparel purchase decision than the controls [OR 0.190 ; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.047-0.762, p = 0.019). In the patient group, there was no correlation between the number of purchased trials and the severity of anhedonia, but the number of purchased trials was negatively correlated with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale score at a trend level (R = -0.436, p = 0.055). Conclusions Patients with schizophrenia considered the fitness of clothes less than healthy controls on apparel purchasing decisions. Schizophrenia patients with lower self-esteem were intended to buy more clothes.

녹색생활관련 인지정도가 녹색소비행동에 미치는 영향 연구 (The Effect of Cognition Degree of Green Life on Green Consumer Behavior)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine green consumer behavior (green product purchasing behavior and green consumption life) affected by demographical characteristics, and cognition degree of green life (cognition of a green indicator, a green life catalyst system, and environmental problems). It's also to promote strategy and suggest effective activation plans for the vitalization of green consumer behavior. To carry out the task, verification of credibility, multiple regression analysis, two-step cluster analysis, and multinomial logistic analysis were used. The results are as follows: First, the factors that effect green product purchasing behavior were gender, age, cognitive of a green indicator, carbon points system, electricity peak hour system, and seriousness of environmental damage due to lifestyle. Second, the factors that effect green lifestyle were gender, age, carbon grade indicator system, cognition of a green system, and the seriousness of environmental damage due to lifestyle. Third, the comparative group characteristic analysis showed low rates for careless green consumer behavior groups compared to the passive green consumer behavior groups in cognition of a green indicator, green system, and environmental problems. For active green consumer behavior groups, the analysis showed high rates in cognition of carbon grades, eco-labeling, electricity peak hour system, and environmental damage due to lifestyle. In order to encourage green consumer behavior, it's evident that cognition of a green indicator, a green life catalyst system, and environmental problems need to be improved through strategic education and continuous encouragement.

도시부 핸드프리 휴대폰 사용이 운전자 부하 및 수행도에 미치는 영향 연구 (Effects of a Hand-Free Cellular Phone Use on Driver's Mental Workload and Performance in an Urban Area)

  • 근래 폭발적인 휴대폰 사용자의 증가와 비례한 운전 중 휴대폰 사용에 의한 교통사고 빈도 및 상해정도의 증가는 운전 중 휴대폰 사용을 새로운 주요한 교통사고의 요인으로 떠오르게 하고 있다. 이는 휴대폰 사용에 의한 운전자의 조정 및 감시, 경계 행위의 방해, 인지 및 정신적 부하의 증가에 의한 '부적합한 경계 (improper lookout)'와 '부주의 (inattention)' 상태 발생에서 유발되며, 현재 많은 국가들이 법제정을 통한 운전 중 휴대 폰 사용금지를 실행중이거나 고려하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 현재 대부분의 국가에서 실질적 규제 대상에서 제외되어 있는 운전 중 핸드프리 휴대폰의 사용이 운전자의 부하 및 수행도에 미치는 영향을 시각분석 정신적 부하, 부가작업 수행도, 스티어링 엔트로피의 측정을 통하여 실시하였다. 실험은 일본 도시 중심부에서 실시되었으며, 결과는 부가작업의 형태에 따른 4가지의 실험상황과 시험구간의 직선부와 곡선부 (우회전) 사이의 비교분석 통하여 제시하였다. 또한, 실험설계, 적용평가방법, 및 실시과정에서의 문제점을 바탕으로 핸드폰관련 실제 도로시험을 위한 가이드라인을 제시한다.

대학캠퍼스 건축물의 형태적 요소 및 이미지평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Image Evaluation and Morphological Elements of Buildings In the University Campus)

  • This study evaluates the relationship among the evaluation structure of morphological elements, the satisfaction on exterior elements, and the image evaluation for the campus landmarks by campus type. The investigation results are summarized as follows. 1) The university headquarter was nominated as the university landmark, and the main reason for the nomination was the building's historic and locational value. 2) Of the morphological elements of the campus landmark, 'proportion and balance' and 'harmony and order' were deemed important, while 'diversity' was deemed less important. 3) For the satisfaction on the facility's exterior elements, the evaluation structure was different for each university. However, the factor of 'location of the facility' was deemed the biggest factor for satisfaction for all universities, while the facility's 'color and material' were found to be the most dissatisfying factors. 4) The image evaluation on the facility was different for each university. Although there was a strong skeptical image about 'liveliness', there was a very positive image about 'elegance' and 'scale'. 5) On the relationship between the satisfaction on exterior elements and the image evaluation, there was a different evaluation structure for each university. 'Facility's color and exterior material' were the main elements which improved the overall image of the facility. Thus, the study results strongly suggest that an important task is to determine the maintenance direction through the emphasis on the relationship between exterior elements and image satisfaction for each university.

메타인지 전략에 기반한 코스웨어 설계 (A Courseware Design using Metacognitive Strategy)

  • 현재 개발된 대부분의 코스웨어들은 학습 효과를 높이기 위한 교수 전략 부족으로 질적인 면에서 부정적인 평가를 받고 있다. 그리고 코스웨어 설계는 시간이 많이 걸리며 어려운 작업이다. 따라서 코스웨어 개발을 체계적으로 하고 학습 효과를 높이기 위한 개발 방법들이 요구된다. 본 연구는 메타인지 전략을 활용하여 코스웨어 설계 방향 및 관리를 용이하도록 하였다. 또한 교수 모형 구체화 틀을 메타인지 도구로 활용하여 설계를 쉽게하고 학습 효과를 높인 코스웨어의 질 향상도 추구하였다. 그리고 이 방법을 교육대학의 코스웨어 설계론 수강자들에게 적용하였다. 적용 후 분석 결과 메타인지 전략으로 코스웨어 설계가 쉽고, 설계 과정 중 자신의 설계 방향을 모니터링 할 수 있었다. 교수 모형 구체화 틀을 메타인지 전략으로 활용함으로 체계적인 설계를 할 수 있었고 구체적 교수 전략을 구현 할 수 있었다. 그러나 설계자들이 교수모형 구체화 틀을 만드는 데 어려움이 있었고, 교수모형 구체화 틀의 공유가 필요하였다.
