  • Terrain parameters calculated from digital elevation models (DEM) have become increasingly important in current spatially distributed models of earth surface processes. This paper investigated how the ability of upslope area for predicting the spatial distribution of soil properties varies depending on the selection of spatial resolutions of DEM and algorithms. Four soil attributes from eight soil-terrain data sets collected from different environments were used. Five different methods of calculating upslope area were first compared for their dependency on different grid sizes of DEM. Multiple flow algorithms produced the highest correlation coefficients for most soil attributes and the lowest variations amongst different DEM resolutions and soil attributes. The high correlation coefficient remained unchanged at resolutions from 15 m to 50 m. Considering decreasing topographical details with increasing grid size, we suggest that the size of 15-30 m may be most suitable for soil-landscape analysis purposes in our study areas.

  • This purpose of this research is to observe the influence of non-condensable gas (NCG) on a horizontal super-hydrophobic aluminum tube and compare it with a bare aluminum tube. To achieve super-hydrophobic characteristics, an aluminum tube was coated with a Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM). The overall heat transfer coefficient U was used to represent the condensation performance. The NCG mass fraction was the main variable, and its range was 0.08 to 0.45. The condensation performance of the SAM tube and bare tube increased with decreasing mass fraction of NCG. The SAM tube showed 1.9 to 2.5 times larger dropwise condensation performance than the bare tube. When the mass fraction of NCG decreased in the SAM tube, the rate of increase of the SAM tube was lower because flooded condensation occurred. In addition, filmwise condensation occurred in the SAM tube when more active condensation was generated, and its performance was lower than that of the bare aluminum tube. The flooded and filmwise condensation in the SAM tube is explained by the pinning effect. In conclusion, controlling the condition of the condenser is necessary to improve the condensation performance by surface modification a SAM.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the causal model of nurses' organizational commitment. Based on literature review and Fishbein's behavioral intentions model ((Fishbein, 1967;Fishbein & Ajzen. 1975), the organizational commitment was conceptualized within a motivational framework that mediate between antecedents variables and outcome variables. Antecedent variables were pay, promotional chances, continuing education opportunity, rigidity of the administration, paticipative decision making, latitude, group support, role conflict, work load, need for achievement, experience and pride for professional nursing. Outcome variable was turnover intention. The subjects were 373 nurses who were working at 2 large general hospitals located in Seoul. It represents a response rate of 94%. Data for this study was collected from August 29 to September 22 in 1997 by Questionnaire. Path analysis with LISREL 7.16 prigram was used to test the fit of the proposed conceptual model to data and to examine the causal relationships among variables. The result showed that both the proposed model and the modified model fit the data excellently. It needs to be notified, however, that path analysis can not count measurement errors; measurement error can attenuate estimates of coefficient and explanatory power. Nontheless the model revealed considerable explanatory power for organizational commitment (58%). pride for professional nursing (50%) and turnover intention(40%). In predicting nurses' organizational commitment. the findings of this study clearly demonstrated 'the pride for professional nursing' might be the most important variables of all the antecedent variables. Group support. role conflict, need for achievement were also found to be important determinants for the organizational commitment and turnover intention. The result showed experience might be a predictor for 'pride for professional nursing' and 'turnover intention' but not 'organizational commitment'. 'Rigidity of the administration' and latitude were also found to have important roles in predictor for the organizational commitment, while participative decision making might have an impact on turnover intention. On the other hand promotional chance had an influence on all the outcome variables, while pay only on turnover intention. In predicting turnover intention, the result clearly revealed 'the pride for professional nursing' and 'organizational commitment' might be the most powerful predictors among all the variables. Theses results were discussed, including directions for the future research and practical implications drawn from the research were suggested.

  • This paper is concerned with the permeability through a decomposed granite soil layer which is influnced by change of grain sizes and crushed soils made by varied compaction energy. The change in the content of crushed soils can be described in terms of the ratio of surface area ($S_w{^{\prime}}/S_w $). The experiments were carried out to obtain the relationships of the coefficient of permeability(K) versus the optimum moisture content($w_{opt}$) by the variable head permeability test with the samples that were preapared by compaction test. The results are found as follows; (1) By the change in compaction energy, the crush ratio increased whereas the void ratio decreased with a larger maximum dry density running in parallel with the zero air void curve. (2) The ratio of surface area was $0.33(P)^{0.96}$ in $S_w{^{\prime}}/S_w $ with no relation to the compaction energy. (3) The grain size which produced the largest crush of soil particles ranged from 0.5 to 1 millimetre (4) The relationship of K versus $e^3$/1+e appeared as a straight line on the full-log-scale paper under the optimum moisture state. (5) As the compaction energy was larger, the passing percentage of #200-sieve grains increased linearly. The increment in the surface area ratio was deemed to have been caused by the decreased in the permeability.

  • To elucidate the influence of nitrogen application rate on cool tolerance at the booting stage and respiratory activity of anther at the heading stage in the rice plants, the relationships among nitrogen content in the leaf blade and leaf sheath+culm at young microspore stage, cool tolerance at the booting stage and respiratory activity of anther at the heading stage were investigated for 3 rice cultivars-Yeomyungbyeo, Unbongbyeo and Milyang 23. Nitrogen content in the leaf blade at the young microspore stage was negatively correlated with respiratory rate of anther at the heading stage and fertility index, respectively. Respiratory activity of anther at the heading stage with 10ppm nitrogen application was higher than that of anther with 100ppm nitrogen application. On the Arrhenius plot of respiratory activity of anther at the heading stage, Yeomyungbyeo and Unbongbyeo showed a break at 18$^{\circ}C$ and 18.5$^{\circ}C$, respectively, with 100ppm nitrogen application, but did not show a break in respiratory activity of anther with 10ppm nitrogen application, while Milyang 23 showed a break at 20.5$^{\circ}C$ and 21$^{\circ}C$ with 10ppm and 100ppm nitrogen application, respectively. The highest correlation coefficient between fertility and respiratory rate of anther at the heading stage was shown at 20$^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of 15$^{\circ}C$-30$^{\circ}C$.

  • Recent climage changes have resulted in increases in rainfall intensity and flood frequency as well as the risk of flood damage due to typhoons during the summer season. Water-friendly facilities such as ecological parks and sports facilities have been established on floodplains of rivers since the river improvement project was implemented and increases in the flood levels of rivers due to typhoons can lead to direct flood damage to such facilities. To analyze the hydraulic influence of these water-friendly facilities on floodplains or to evaluate their stability, numerical analysis should be performed in advance. In addition, it is crucial to address the drying and wetting processes generated by water level fluctuations. This study uses a Nays2D model, which analyzes drying and wetting, to examine its applicability to simple terrain in which such fluctuations occur and to natural rivers in which drying occurs. The results of applying this model to sites of actual typhoon events are compared with values measured at water level observatories. Through this comparison, it is determined that values of coefficient of determination ($R^2$), mean absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) are 0.988, 0.208, and 0.239, respectively, thus showing a statistically high correlation. In addition, the results are used to calculate flood risk indices for evaluation of such risk for water-friendly facilities constructed on floodplains.

  • Objective : Migration can be a stressful process to people because they have to adjust a lot of things including habits, routine and cultural behavior. Also, Migrant can negatively impact on participation in daily meaningful occupations. Thus, the purpose of this research is to investigate whether participation in meaningful occupations after immigration and environmental factors impact the QOL in migrant women. Method : Migrant females who live in Australia were invited to participate in the study (n= 9). In this study, participation, environmental factors and QOL were measured using the questionnaire, which was developed by researchers. Purposive sampling was used to select the participants who were then asked to fill out a survey. Both quantitative data and qualitative data were collected. The SPSS program was used to process the quantitative data that was transcribed and coded. Result : Spearman's rank correlation coefficient shows that the total scale of QOL and the total scale of occupational engagement were significantly correlated at the 0.05 level. Conclusion : There was a significant relationship between quality of life and occupational engagements. Migrant women tend to have a lack of participation in meaning occupations thus, it seems to impact on their quality of life.
