  • Park et al. (2012) examined the impacts of coeducation in high school on the college scholastic ability test using random assignment in Seoul high schools. However, the student random assignment in Seoul within a school district was performed only within 30 min commutable areas using public transportation and Park et al. (2012) did not aware of this rule. This paper reexamines the question by matching nearest two single sex schools with a coeducation school within a school district. We found single sex school students achieve higher test score than that of coeducation school for both male and female. The magnitude of test score improvement for female is smaller than that of Park et al. (2012). However, the magnitude for male is bigger than that of Park et al. (2012).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of middle school students' recognition of food and nutrition part in Home Economics by gender, school location and school type. The study was carried out through questionnaire about three category: perception (interests, practical usefulness, attitude change in food behavior), difficulty (nutrition and health in adolescence, balanced diet, principle of cooking and preparing food), necessity (nutrition and health in adolescence, balanced diet, principle of cooking and preparing food). The subjects were 1014 middle school students of 1st grade in Jeonbuk area; urban 334, suburban 339 and rural 341. The results of this study were as follows. 1) There was difference in ‘interests’ by gender (girls > boys), school location (urban, suburban > rural) and school type (coeducation > boys, girls). There were differences in ‘practical usefulness’ by school location (urban > rural) and in ‘attitude change in food behavior’ by school location (urban > suburban > rural) and school type (boys, girls > coeducation). 2) There was difference in difficulty in section of ‘nutrition and health in adolescence’ by school location (suburban > rural). There were no differences in section of ‘balanced diet’ by gender, school location and school type. But there were differences in section of ‘ principle of cooking and preparing food’ by school location (urban, rural > suburban) and school type (coeducation > boys). 3) There were differences in necessity for ‘balanced diet’ and for ‘ principle of cooking and preparing food’ by school location (urban, suburban > rural) and school type (coeducation > boys, girls). Characteristically, the boys had more necessity for ‘nutrition and health in adolescence’ and for ‘balanced diet’ than girls but girls had more necessity for ‘principle of cooking and preparing food’ than boys. It suggests that gender, school type and school location should be considered for an effective and practical curriculum of food and nutrition part in Home Economics.

The subjects were 476 middle school students and 658 high school students from Seoul and Kang Won province. The data were collected from November 19 to December 18. 1996. using a 56-item questionnaire. and analyzed by SAS program for t-test. x2-test. and pearson correlation coefficients. The results were as follows : 1. High school students had more knowledge than middle school students about AIDS. 2. Male. students from Seoul. and students who had drinking experience and smoking experience among middle school students. and male. students from Seoul. and students of non-coeducation among high school students were more knowledgeable about AIDS. 3. Misconceptions about the transmission of AIDS through non-intimate contact were especially common among middle school students. And a high proportion of middle and high school students knew very little about the symptoms of AIDS. 4. High school students had more positive attitudes toward AIDS than middle school students. 5. Students from Seoul and students who had smoking experience among middle school students. and students from Seoul and non-coeducation and students who had substance use experience among high school students were more positive attitudes about AIDS. 6. Most of the middle and high school students agreed that there is a need for AIDS education. 7. Middle and high school students reported that had learned about AIDS mostly from TV. Since students in the middle-school age group are especially at risk for developing AIDSrelated behaviors. this study findings suggest that it is crucial to develop school-based AIDS education programs that help students acquire the knowledge and attitudes to adopt and maintain behaviors that reduce the risk of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and other related health problems.

For the study, the distinctive characteristics during adolescence stage were theoretically examined. Through the examination, this study found four interests in fashions and school uniforms. For the purpose, this study conducted interviews with grade 2 students in a total of six coeducation secondary schools in Seoul, Gyeongki and Gwangju using a questionnaire. The survey period ranged from December 15 2008 to December 24 2008 and a total of 1196 were used for a final analysis. This study extracted factors as Principal Components Analysis and used Varimax for orthogonal rotation analysis. To measure confidence, it used Cronbach's a test to item internal consistency. For data analysis, it used SPSS WIN 12.0 and for hypothesis analysis, frequency analysis, cross analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA were conducted. For posterior analysis, it used Sheffe test. The results are as follows: First, the interests in fashion and school uniforms differed depending on their own tastes, but these interests were more influenced by environment around school. Secondly, the boy subjects were more aggressive towards repairs their uniforms than the girls, which suggested that boys had stronger desire to show themselves to others and more satisfaction from repairs their uniforms than the girls. Based on the results, this study concluded as follows: We should pay attention to preventing deformation in original design of school uniforms while expanding options to have variable designs or to change detailed part of design. So, there will be no additional uniform mending expense and financial loss to parents, and students will be more satisfied with their school uniforms.

Egocentrism of high school boys and girls showed middle levels of mean and distribution, and sympathy was the highest at coeducation high School whereas a sense of justice was the highest at boys' high school. Self-consciousness was high level at both boys' and girls' high school, but public self-consciousness was higher than personal one. Both of them were higher in girls' than in boys'. • This study utilized the What Is Happening In this Class (WIHIC) questionnaire to examine students' perceptions of their science learning environment. Data was collected from 587 middle school students in seven coeducation schools in Seoul. Higher mean scores occurred on the scales of Student cohesiveness, Task orientation, Cooperation and Equity in the WIHIC, whereas lower mean scores occurred on Teacher support, Involvement and Investigation. The effects of gender on students' perceptions of their science learning environment were not statistically significant overall, but girls perceived Student cohesiveness and Cooperation more positively than boys. Correlations between the WIHIC scales of the low-level group that perceived their learning environments negatively (10 percentiles) and the high-level group that perceived their learning environments positively (90 percentiles) were computed. Teacher support, Involvement, Task Orientation and Investigation were highly correlated with each other in the low-level group, whereas only Teacher support and Equity were correlated in the high group. Educational implications were discussed.
