  • This paper proposes a reduction scheme for codebook search time in the adaptive codebook using wavelet transformed coefficients. In a CELP coder, pitch estimation with a combined open loop and closed loop search in adaptive codebook needs a lengthy search. More precisely, the pitch search using autocorrelation function over all possible ranges has been shown inefficient compared to the consuming time. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive codebook search algorithm which ensures the same position for the pitch with maximum wavelet coefficient over various scaling factors in Dyadic wavelet transform. A new adaptive codebook search algorithm reduces 25% conventional search time with almost the same quality of speech.

  • The paper describes a new algorithm for reducing the edge degradation of a vector quantization(VQ) in low rates. This algorithm exploits several codebooks, one of which is adaptively selected by standard deviation(SD) of the vector currently being coded. Also, SD search method for reducing the complexity of codebook search is proposed. As a result, a proposed VQ has good performance anout 30 dB PSNR in the 0.4-0.7 bpp range.

  • In this paper, the complexity reduction method for QCELP speech coder (IS-96) without any perfomrance degradation is proposed for the vecoder of CDMA digital cellular system. The energy terms in pitch parameter search and codebook search routines that require large computations are calculated recursively by utilizing the overlapped structure of code vectors in adaptive codebook and excitation codebook. The additional complexity reduction in the codebook search routine can be achieved by using a simple form in calculation of the energy term when the initial codebook value is zero. In the case of lower transmission rates such as 4,2,1 kbps, the complexity reduction by recursive calulations of energy term is increased.

  • This paper describes a method for estimating motion vectors in a video sequence. In this method, we find motion vectors using the full search method from the training images and then, train the codebook of the neural networks vector quantizer using these motion vectors. A motion vector can be estimated using the codebook as a motion prediction region. The codewords in the codebook represent the motion vectors for the input image sequences. Since the codebook is used as the search region for estimating the motion vectors, search points and computation can be reduced compared with the full search block matching algorithm. Additionally, the information required to transmit the motion vectors can be reduced.

  • Using a neural network for vector quantization, we can expect to have better codebook design algorithm for its adaptive process. Also, the designed codebook puts the codewords in order by its self-organizing characteristics, which makes it possible to partially search the codebook for real time process. To exploit these features of the neural network, in this paper, we propose a new codebook design algorithm that modified the KSFM(Kohonen`s Self-organizing Feature Map) and then combines the K-means algorithm. Experimental results show the performance improvment and the ability of the partical seach of the codebook for the real time process.

  • In this paper, in order to reduce the computational complexity of codebook, we propose a fast search algorithm which takes advantage of the information generated in the process of the self-organizing map (SOM). In an attempt to demonstrate the influence of the ordering of codebook on the performance of the partial distance search (PDS), we present the results of computation savings for three cases of ordering of codebooks.

  • This paper presents an efficient Quantized Equal Gain Transmission(QEGT) codebook index searching technique for MISO beamforming system in a Rayleigh flat fading channel. The searching time for the optimum weight vector among the codebook vectors increases exponentially when the codebook size increases linearly, although the bit error rate decreases. So, newly defined simple metric is proposed for fast searching, which determines a few candidates. Then the conventional method combined with accurate search algorithm selects the optimal index. This strategy significantly reduces the overall search time, while maintaining almost the same bit error rate performance. Furthermore, as the codebook size increases, the search time is considerably decreased compared to that of the conventional approach.

  • Vector quantization (VQ) is widely used in many high-quality and high-rate data compression applications such as speech coding, audio coding, image coding and video coding. When the size of a VQ codebook is large, the computational complexity for the full codeword search method is a significant problem for many applications. A number of complexity reduction algorithms have been proposed and investigated using such properties of the codebook as the triangle inequality. This paper proposes a new structured VQ search algorithm that is based on a multi-stage structure for searching for the best codeword. Even using only two stages, a significant complexity reduction can be obtained without any loss of quality.

  • In this paper, we efficiently implement the AMR speech coder by reducing the complexity of algebraic codebook search. To reduce the computational complexity of the algebraic codebook search, we propose a fast algebraic codebook search method that improves conventional depth first tree search method used in AMR speech coder algorithm. The proposed method reduces the search complexity by pruning the trees which are less possible to be selected as an optimum excitation. This method needs no additional computation for selecting the trees to be pruned and reduces the computational complexity considerably compared to the original depth first tree search method with slightly degradation or speech qualify. Applying our method to the implementation or AMR speech coder with 12.2 kbps mode by using the TeakLite DSP, we reduce the search complexity about 40% compared to the conventional method.

  • We present a very simple algorithm for reducing the encoding (codebook search) complexity of vector quantization (VQ), exploiting some features of a vector currently being encoded. A proposed VQ of 16 (=$4{\times}4$) vector dimension and 256 codewords shows a slight performance degradation of about 0.1-0.9 dB, however, with only 16 or 32 among 256 codeword searches, i.e., with just 1/16 or 1/8 search complexity compared to a full-search VQ. And the proposed VQ scheme is also compared to and shown to be a bit superior to tree-search VQ with regard to their SNR performance and memory requirement.
