  • Helium mass in the envelope is one of the most important properties in progenitors of type Ib/c supernovae (SNe Ib/c), since SN Ib/c progenitors are distinguished by the presence of He I lines. However, previous progenitor models do not reproduce the required He mass limit($M_{He}$ < $0.14M_{\odot}$) suggested by a spectroscopic analysis of SN Ib/c. In this work, we investigated the effect of overshooting on the evolution of pure helium stars, focusing on the final He mass in the envelope, $M_{He,f}$. We used the MESA code to calculate single helium star models with the initial masses of $M_{init}=5{\sim}30M_{\odot}$, Z=0.02, 0.04 and overshooting parameters of $f_{ov}=0{\sim}0.4$. The final He mass $M_{He,f}$ decreases as $f_{ov}$ increases, due to larger burning core compared to weak overshooting models. Dependence of the final mass $M_{He,f}$ on overshooting is strongest for models with $M_{init}=7{\sim}10M_{\odot}$, and this effect originates from accelerated mass loss during transition between WNE and WC/O phase. However, $M_{He,f}$ exceeds $0.27M_{\odot}$ for all models, which still doesn't meet the criteria of $M_{He}$ < $0.14M_{\odot}$. This implies that mass loss during the post helium burning phase must be enhanced dramatically compared to what the standard models predict.

  • The process of mould design in the foundry industry has been based on the intuition and experience of foundry engineers and designers. To bring the industry to a more scientific basis the design process should be integrated with scientific analysis such as heat transfer. The production by foundry techniques is influenced by the geometry configuration, which affects the solidification conditions and subsequent cooling. Numerical simulation and/or experiments make possible the selection of adequate materials, reducing cycle times and minimizing production costs. The main propose of this work is to study the heat transfer phenomena in the mould considering the phase change of the cast-part. Due to complex geometry of the mould, a block unstructured grid and a generalized curvilinear formulation engaged with the finite volume method is described and applied. Two types of boundary conditions, diffusive and Newtonian, are used and compared. The developed numerical code is tested in real case and the main results are compared with experimental data. The results showed that the solidification time is about 6 seconds for diffusive boundary conditions and 14.8 seconds for Newtonian boundary conditions. The use of the block unstructured grid in combination with a generalized curvilinear formulation works well with the finite volume method and allows the development of more efficient algorithms with better capacity to describe the part contours through a lesser number of elements.

  • As one of the advanced design features of the APR1400, direct vessel injection (DVI) system is being considered instead of conventional cold leg injection (CLI) system. It is known that the DVI system greatly enhances the reliability of the emergency core cooling (ECC) system. However, there is still a dispute on its performance in terms of water delivery to the reactor core during the reflood phase of a large-break loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). Thus, experimental validation is under progress. In this paper, test results of direct ECC bypass performed in the steam-water test facility tailed MIDAS (Multi-dimensional Investigation in Downcomer Annulus Simulation) are presented. The test condition is determined, based on the preliminary analysis of TRAC code, by applying the ‘modified linear scaling method’with the l/4.93 length scale . From the tests, ECC direct bypass fraction, steam condensation rate and information on the flow distribution in the upper annulus downcomer region are obtained.

  • In the non-contact 3-dimensional (3D) shape measurements, the fringe pattern projection method based on the phase-shifting technique has been considered very effective for its high speed and accuracy. The digital fringe projector in particular has great flexibility in generating fringe patterns since the patterns can be controlled easily by the computer program. In this work, we have developed a high-speed digital laser grating projection system using a laser diode and a polygon mirror, and evaluated its performance. It has been demonstrated that all the optical measurements required to find out the profile of a 3D object could be carried out within 31 ms, which confirmed the validity of our 3D measurement system. The result implies the more important fact that the speed in 3D measurement can be enhanced remarkably since, in our novel system, there is no device like a LCD or DMD whose response time limits the measurement speed.

  • A fractional-N frequency synthesizer supports quadruple bands and multiple standards for mobile broadcasting systems. A novel linearized coarse tuned VCO adopting a pseudo-exponential capacitor bank structure is proposed to cover the wide bandwidth of 65%. The proposed technique successfully reduces the variations of KVCO and per-code frequency step by 3.2 and 2.7 times, respectively. For the divider and prescaler circuits, TSPC (true single-phase clock) logic is extensively utilized for high speed operation, low power consumption, and small silicon area. Implemented in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS, the PLL covers $154{\sim}303$ MHz (VHF-III), $462{\sim}911$ MHz (UHF), and $1441{\sim}1887$ MHz (L1, L2) with two VCO's while dissipating 23 mA from 1.8 V supply. The integrated phase noise is 0.598 and 0.812 degree for the integer-N and fractional-N modes, respectively, at 750 MHz output frequency. The in-band noise at 10 kHz offset is -96 dBc/Hz for the integer-N mode and degraded only by 3 dB for the fractional-N mode.

  • Two phase control (PC) schemes using limited feedback are proposed for multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. One PC scheme cophases channel gains with respect to the first transmit antenna channel gain, and the other PC scheme cophases channel gains by positioning all the channel gains into a fixed sector. We analyze the combined channel gain for both PC schemes, and find that the PC scheme that cophases with respect to the first transmit antenna channel gain provides 1.2 dB power gain over an orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) when the number of transmit antennas is four and the number of feedback bits is three.

  • In this study, we utilized various type of GPS observation measurements to get a camera projection center of the aerial triangulation and consequently to determine which type is acceptable. For the accuracy and the error analysis, comparison between a projection center from the conventional model adjustment and the result determined by the kinematic DGPS positioning which is fitted to the conventional model adjustment using 3D conformal transformation method has been made. The camera projection center is located within a $\pm{2m}$ for C/A code range measurements, $\pm{14cm}$ for L1 phase measurements and $\pm{10cm}$ for L1/L2 phase measurements with $1\sigma$. In this way, the accuracy of the camera projection center by the bundle block adjustment can be predicted.

  • We analyze the performance of multistage cooperation in decode-and-forward relay networks where the transmission between source and destination takes place in $T{\geq}2$ equal duration and orthogonal time phases with the help of relays. The source transmits only in the first time phase. All relays that can decode the source's transmission forward the source's message to the destination in the second time phase, using a space-time code. During subsequent time phases, the relays that have successfully decoded the source message using information from all previous transmitting relays, transmit the space-time coded symbols for the source's message. The non-decoding relays keep accumulating information and transmit in the later stages when they are able to decode. This process continues for T cooperation phases. We develop and analyze the outage probability of multistage cooperation protocol under orthogonal relaying. Through analytical results, we obtain the near-optimal placement strategy for relays that gives the best performance when compared with most other candidate relay location strategies of interest. For different relay network topologies, we also investigate an interesting tradeoff between an increased SNR and decreased spectral efficiency as the number of cooperation stages is increased. It is also shown that the largest multistage cooperation gain is obtained in the low and moderate SNR regime.

  • To investigate the realistic behavior of mass and energy release and resultant containment response during large break Loss of Coolant accident (LOCA), analyses are performed for Yonggwang (YGN) 3&4 nuclear power plants by using a merged version of RELAP5/CONTEMPT4 computer code. Comparative analyses by using conservative design computer codes are also peformed. The break types analyzed are the double-ended guillotine breaks at the cold leg and hot leg. The design analysis resulted in containment peak pressure during post-blowdown phase for the cold leg break. However, the RELAP5/CONTEMPT4 analyses show that the containment pressure has a peak during blowdown phase, thereafter it decreases monotonously without the second port-blowdown peak. For the hot leg break, revised design analysis shows much lower pressure than that reported in YGN 3&4 final safety analysis report. The RELAP5/CONTEMPT4 analysis shoos similar trend and confirmed that the bypass flow through the broken loop steam generator during post-blowdown is negligibly small compared to that of cold leg break. The low pressure and temperature predicted tv realistic analysis presented in this paper suggest that the design analysis methodology contains substantial margin and it can be improved to provide benefit in investment protection, such as, relaxing plant technical specifications and reducing containment design pressure.

  • The study was focused on the development of computational scheme in three dimensional configurations by applying effective heat capacity model to the numerical procedure in order to predict the temperature profiles of a buried pipeline and the frozen penetration depth(FPD) of a freezing soil medium. To realize this, the investigator conducted the unsteady state heat transfer analysis, using the commercial code ABAQUS, for the freezing granite soil medium including a pipeline in a closed system. The proposed model took into consideration the phase change effect of in situ pore water in the frozen fringe. The comparison of results obtained by the proposed model and the actual performances was valuable in establishing a level of confidence in the application of introduced theory.
