  • Considering vacancy generation and migration in grain and sink at grain boundary, a mechanistic densification model which is dependent on UO$_2$ temperature and microstructure has been developed. This densification model is a function of time, fission rate, temperature, density, pore size distribution and grain size. The resultant equation derived in this model which is different from Assmann and Stehle's resultant equations for four temperature regions, can be applied directly for all the pellet temperatures. The predictions of the present densification model very well agreed with the experimental data. This model well predicts absolute magnitude and trend in comparison with the empirical algorithm used in KFEDA code.

  • Reinforced concrete frame buildings in regions of low to moderate seismicity are typically designed only for gravity loads with non-seismic detailing provisions of the code. These buildings possess strong beam-weak column, which brings about the brittle structural performance like the column sidesway failure mechanism during the strong lateral load. The objective of this paper is to enhance the column strength and deformation capacity for reconfiguring the structural failure mode by averting a column soft-story collapse and moving to a more ductile beam-sides way mechanism suing new reinforcing materials. Aramid fiber sheet and reinforcing rod-composite materials was used for this purpose. The column was modeled by the 2/3 scale experimental specimen retested. According to the concept of the capacity design, the damaged column was strengthened by the column jacketing using new reinfocing materials such as rod-composite materials. In conclusion, the improvement of the flexural strength is observed and the capacity of the energy dissipation and the ductility is enhanced, too.

  • In this paper, we consider an improved deformation method of IFS(iterated function system) fractal using codes of fractal points. In the existing deformation methods, the intermediate results of position dependent partial deformation propagate randomly due to the randomly selected maps of iteration. Therefore, in many cases, the obtained results become somewhat monotonous feeling shapes. To improve these limitations, we propose a method in which the selection of maps are controlled by codes of fractal points. Applying this method, we can obtain interesting fractal deformation conforming with its fractal features. Also, we propose a simple method, incorporating state variables, that can be applied to deformation of some fractal features other than position coordinates.

  • The Advanced Power Reactor Plus(APR+), which is a GEN III+ reactor based on the APR1400, is being developed in Korea. In order to enhance the safety of the APR+, a passive auxiliary feedwater system(PAFS) has been adopted in the APR+. The PAFS replaces the conventional active auxiliary feedwater system(AFWS) by introducing a natural driving force mechanism while maintaining the system function of cooling the primary side and removing the decay heat. As the PAFS completely replaces the conventional AFWS, it is required to verify the cooling capacity of PAFS for the core damage frequency(CDF) evaluation. For this reason, this paper discusses the cooling performance of the PAFS during transient accidents. The test case and scenarios were picked from the result of the sensitivity analysis in APR+ Probabilistic Safety Assessment(PSA). The analysis was performed by the best estimate thermal-hydraulic code, RELAP5/.MOD3.3. This study shows that the plant maintains the stable state without the core damages under the given test scenarios. The results of PSA considering this analysis' results shows that the CDF values are decreased. The analysis results can be used for more realistic and accurate performance of a PSA.

  • This article presents a security module based on a field programmable gate array (FPGA) to mitigate man-in-the-middle cyber attacks. Nowadays, the FPGA is considered to be the state of the art in nuclear power plants I&C systems due to its flexibility, reconfigurability, and maintainability of the FPGA technology; it also provides acceptable solutions for embedded computing applications that require cybersecurity. The proposed FPGA-based security module is developed to mitigate information-gathering attacks, which can be made by gaining physical access to the network, e.g., a man-in-the-middle attack, using a cryptographic process to ensure data confidentiality and integrity and prevent injecting malware or malicious data into the critical digital assets of a nuclear power plant data communication system. A model-based system engineering approach is applied. System requirements analysis and enhanced function flow block diagrams are created and simulated using CORE9 to compare the performance of the current and developed systems. Hardware description language code for encryption and serial communication is developed using Vivado Design Suite 2017.2 as a programming tool to run the system synthesis and implementation for performance simulation and design verification. Simple windows are developed using Java for physical testing and communication between a personal computer and the FPGA.

  • Energy losses through windows and doors are big problems in the construction industry. For glass only, it has takes the largest portion of mass from window assembly and it responsible for 24 ~ 45% of energy loss from total building energy loss. Insulating glass unit should maintain their basic functions during their working life in order to contribute positively for global warming issue. There have been many research works for improving insulating glass unit durability. But it is not easy job to fulfill the requirements because insulating glass units composed of many components. So, overall it is required to have right qualify control procedures starting from material selection to fabrication, shipping and installation to the customer site. In this report, we have reviewed the durability of insulating glass unit made from different grades of sealing materials based on globally accepted industry codes such as EN1279. ASTM E 2190 and Locally available code. KS L 2003. The result showed that there is a relationship between the mechanical properties of insulating glass 2nd sealant and the durability of the units.

  • This paper presents a basic methodology and a set of numerical tools for the preliminary design of solid-fueled ramjet missiles. An elementary code determines the baseline system configuration comprised of warhead, guidance-control, and propulsion masses and geometries from specific correlations found in the literature. Then, the system is refined with the help of external and internal ballistics codes. Equations of motion are solved for the flight's ascending, cruising, and descending stages and the internal ballistic set of equations designs the ramjet engine based on liquefying fuels. The combined tools sized the booster and the ramjet sustainer engines for a long-range missile, intended to transport 200 kg of payload for more than 300 km range flying near 14,000 m altitude at Mach 3.0. The refined system configuration had 600 mm in diameter and 8,500 mm in length with overall mass of 2,128 kg and 890 kg/m3 density. Ramjet engine propellant mass fraction was estimated as 74%. Increased missile range can be attained with paraffin-polyethylene blend burning at near constant regression rate through primary air mass flow rate control and lateral 2-D air intakes.

  • This study introduces a transient analysis module developed for RAST-V and validates it using the Kalinin-3 benchmark problem. For the benchmark analysis, RAST-V standalone and STREAM/RAST-V calculations were performed. STREAM supplies the few-group constants and RAST-V conducts a 3D core simulation utilizing few-group cross-sectional data. To improve accuracy, the main solver was developed based on the advanced semi-analytic nodal method. To evaluate the computational capability of the transient analysis module in RAST-V, Kalinin-3 benchmark is employed. Kalinin-3 represents a coolant transient benchmark that offers experimental data during the deactivation of the Main Circulation Pumps. Consequently, the transient calculations reflected the changes in the reactor flow rate. Benchmark comprising steady-state and transient calculations. During the steady state, the STREAM/RAST-V combination demonstrated a 30 ppm root mean square difference from 0 to 128.50 EFPD. For the transient calculations, STREAM/RAST-V showed power differences within ±7 % over a range of 0-300 s. Axial offset differences were within ±3 %, and the RMS difference in radial power ranged within 2.596 % at both 0 and 300 s. Overall, this study effectively demonstrated the newly developed transient solver in RAST-V and validated it using the Kalinin-3 benchmark problem.

  • In this paper, the automatic standby power blocking socket outlet to reduce standby power by blocking power threshold is implemented. Where, the standby power means a flowing power when a disused power electronic is plugged into the socket outlet. The proposed socket outlet can cut off the standby power by establishing a proper block power threshold electronic device according to each electronic device because it can monitor the amount of power through the smart machines such as the real-time PC or mobile phone and directly control the blocking power threshold. The software is implemented by using Visual Studio software, code vision and SN8 C studio, and the hardware is embodied in ATmega128, SN8F27E93S, USB to UART, and relay etc. Through the simulation, we find that the standby power of the proposed method is similar to that of the conventional method in case of the cellular phone but the standby power of the proposed method is much less than that of the conventional method in case of the computer, air conditioning, and set-top box. Therefore, it is proved that the proposed socket outlet has a superior performance in terms of the standby power.

  • This paper proposes the hardware IP design of JBIG2 encoder. In order to facilitate the next generation FAX after the standardization of JBIG2, major modules of JBIG2 encoder are designed and implemented, such as symbol extraction module, Huffman coder, MMR coder, and MQ coder. ImpulseC Codeveloper and Xilinx ISE/EDK program are used for the synthesis of VHDL code. To minimize the memory usage, 128 lines of input image are processed succesively instead of total image. The synthesized IPs are downloaded to Virtex-4 FX60 FPGA on ML410 development board. The four synthesized IPs utilize 36.7% of total slice of FPGA. Using Active-HDL tool, the generated IPs were verified showing normal operation. Compared with the software operation using microblaze cpu on ML410 board, the synthesized IPs are better in operation time. The improvement ratio of operation time between the synthesized IP and software is 17 times in case of symbol extraction IP, and 10 times in Huffman coder IP. MMR coder IP shows 6 times faster and MQ coder IP shows 2.2 times faster than software only operation. The synthesized H/W IP and S/W module cooperated to succeed in compressing the CCITT standard document.
