  • This experimental work is aimed to find out if there is a reasonable tussah silk reeling service. The results obtained are as follows, 1) The best silk reeling rate of tussah cocoon was 8.02% by dupion reeling machine, 7.44% by common with Autumn cocoons, and 7.23% by dupion machine, 6.79% by common with Spring. Those results are sup-erior to 6.00% of the former. 2) The cocoon grading ratio was 63∼68% with Autumn cocoons md 66∼70% with Spring. Spring cocoons showved more 2∼3% than Autumn in cocoon grading ratio. These seem to be resulted from the weather condition. 3) The reeling efficiency was 70g per labor for an hour. 4) The strength of tussah silk war 3g/d and elongation 26% The strength of tussah silk is weaker, and the elongation of it larger than those of raw silk. 5) As these results, the enterprise of the tussah silk reeling has become possible, and will develop as a new industry. Therefore. it is demanded that this new industry will be helped by the Government to get foreign money.

  • This report is prepared to promote cocoon natures for the use of silk reeling material. It is easily understandable that there must be disuniformity composed with superior group and inferior group in commercial silkworms. If such different groups be seperated by some method, it would be a great contribution for the cocoon production. For a comparative purpose, silkworm sex seperation carried out because male silkworms produce more silk than female worms. The author has developed a new chemical reagent available for the seperation of superior group and inferior group from commercial silkworms, which he has named it as Better Hybrid Controller (BHC). The obtained comparative results are summarized as followings. 1. Basic investigation of BHC application a) In case BHC applied with hybrid worms and pure line, the former one starts to adapt mulberry leaves earlyer than pure line variety. b) The mulberry adapting interval distribution of pure line worms after BHC application showed U type distribution, but hybrid worms showed L type or Poisson's distribution. c) In case of BHC application with silkworms, the longer period application is, the duller distribution was formed. d) When silkworms are seperated in two groups by use of BHC application, the earlyer mulberry adapted group is seemed as stronger than the other part and the group ratio is 2 : 1. 2. Comparation between sex seperation result and better hydrid control (BHC) seperation result. a) The cocoon shell per cent of male worm group showed betweer result than the female group but only 0.4% difference between sexes. b) The cocoon shell per cent of superior group, seperated by BHC, showed 0.7% more than the inferior group. c) The average cocoon shell per cent of BHC treated cocoons showed much more than the Control group as 1.6∼2.4% increase. Enven the inferior group showed better result than the Control. d) Such unexpected result is considered to be the result that BHC application is activating some thing with silkworm physiology. e) On the ether hand, the result of sexes seperated groups or male worm group did not show desirable conclusion as far as cocoon shell per cent is concerned. f) However, when the male group was reeled as silk, it showed much better silk yield or silk per cent of cocoon than the female group as much as one per cent difference between by sexes. Such result was brought by superior silk yield from cocoon shell as much as 87.4%. g) On the other hand, the male group showed lowest non breaking reelable ratio (63%) among all group comparation. h) When we compare cocoon qualities by sex seperation and BHC seperation against the Control, there is no qualitative change, but BHC group showed quantitative promotion with cocoon bave length as much as about hundred meters. i) In case of calculation for productive income of cocoon production, BHC applied group showed about ten per cent income promotion more than the Control. The sexes seperated group, however, showed rather negative result because the male cocoon produced poor weight per box eggs which could not cover it by the inclose of silk yield of it. j) So, the BHC application with the fetched worm stage brought about big promotion for cocoon production. k) BHC method may be used either for seperation purpose or quantitative promotion with whole silk-worms. 3. Only male silkworms rearing did not show desirable productivity, so there is no reason to work out it in the fetching stage of worm.

  • There are many factors affecting the development of sericultural industry in Korea. The setting of a rational pricing system for sericultural products is one of important activities of the Korean Government to improve the incentives to producers. The determination o: the prices for many years were based on the production costs including a certain level of profits. Some of cost items are in conflict both in cocoon producers and silk-reeling industries. Government officials have to evaluate these conflicting problems and estimate the consequences of their decisions. In this situation the final decision often became political decisions. This analysis is aimed at providing an alternative method of setting the prices of sericultural products. The criteria of the equilibrium employed in this analysis are based on economic principle which equilibrium condition is determined by the relationships between the marginal productivity of input factors and factor prices. In order to obtain the related information Cobb-Douglas'functions were fitted using KIST computer and data were obtained mostly from the Bank of Korea and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestru, An important assumption is that "Opportunity Costs" of factors input in both cocoon production and silk-Peeling industries are same, The major finding s obtained are as followings. 1) The sum of coefficient of production elastisity in silk-reeling industries is greater than one. Silk-reeling industries are operating under the situation of increasing return to scale and it is, therefore, expected to develop the industries as the capital-intensive large scale. 2) The cocoon producing farmers are under the situations of the decreasing return to scale and it is expected to continue their cocoon farming as the labor-intensive small scale, assuming the present level of production technology. As the development of commercial farming, the resources input in cocoon production will be shifted to the production for higher profitable crops, 3) The price elastisity of production is higher in cocoon production than in silk-reeling industries. It is expected that the price changing effects on domestic production will be resulted from cocoon producers. 4) Based on analysis results of marginal productivities and the opportunity costs of resources, cocoon price for meeting equilibrium price condition is to be increased by 8-16 percent or standard price level of silk increased by 6-8 percent. There were the possibilities of over evaluation on opportunity cost of resources input in silk-reeling industries, or income transfered from the farmers to the industries. It is recommended that the prices for meeting equilibrium price conditions are to be determined by 72 percent for cocoon and 28 percent for silk-reeling costs, based on standard level of the exporting prices.

  • This studies have been carried out to 3nd various causes of cleanness defects on raw silk which has been increased since 1967 in Korea, so that this treatise may be a guide inform action to improve such a defect in future. The cocoon treatment for the proposed work was carried starting with in worst condition to find the critical limit of degrading through such a work. And various analysis have been also worked out using the annual silk testing data past a few years. The results obtained are as follows. 1. There was a great relationship between cleanness and neatness result. 2. Cleanness result is greatly influenced by mounting conditions and handling of cocoons, which brought 40 percent lower as cleanness result than standard ones in which caused minor defects, especially loops and split ends, so the bad mounting conditions and handling of fresh cocoons degraded raw silk from 4A grade to E. 3. The use of good water quality brought the difference of 1.04 percent in cleanness result rather than the use of bad one. 4. Well technical work brought the difference of 0.86 percent in cleanness result rather than poor technical work. 5, Satisfactory cocoon drying installation brought the difference of 1.97 percent in cleanness result rather than insufficient one. 6. Automatic reeling machine marked lower 1,55 percent in cleanness result than multi-end reeling machine. 7. The degrading of cleanness result from 1965 year silk to 1969 year silk marked 1.99 percent, which almost responds to the degrading rate from good to poor cocoon drying installed cleanness results. In view of this result, nowadays, insufficient cocoon drying installation may be main factor to be worse cleanness result of Korean raw silk. 8. The factors of cleanness defect in raw silk once supplied with cocoon into factory are water quality, technique evaluation, cocoon drying capacity and s: reeling machine. The relationship between cleanness result and above factors are as follows. cleanness result=neatness result+1.6-1.04(1-a)-1.97(1-b)-0.86(1-c)+1.55${\times}$d a: The successive we ratio of water quality (0\longrightarrowl) b: The successive ratio of satisfactory cocoon drying installation (0\longrightarrowl) c: The successive ratio of well technical work (0\longrightarrowl) d: 1 in case multi-end reeling machine o in case automatic reeling machine 9, It is not admitted that there is heavy relationship between cleanness occurrence and nonbreaking reel ability. That mal$.$ be sowed with silk reeling technique. 10. The bad mounting conditions caused the worse result on the cocoon quality as much as cleanness. 11. Besides mounting conditions, there may be another factors affecting on the low reel ability of cocoons in Korea.

  • This work has been carried out for many months to check whether polyethylene bag cocoon storging method bring better reeling result against the normal cotton bag storing method. The obtained results were as followings. 1. The pupa killed cocoons could be stored on the ground in case of packing in polyethylene-bag until the secondary dry process. 2. The raw silk percentage of cocoon stored in polyethylene bag, increased 0.5% than the cotton bag storing method, not because of its reelability, but because of the better yield of cocoon bave. 3. Musty cocoon was not shown during the polyethylene hag storage, but the cocoons were attacked by rats as usually. 4. Polyethylene bag storing method invited more insects attack than the normal method, but the attack was able to cease by enclosing two naphthalene tablets in each bag.

  • Effect of topical application with 5, 10 and 15${\mu}$g/ml thyroxine on the pre-cocoon, cocoon, postcocoon and silk improvement were studied in bivoltine silkworm NB18 breed of B. mori L. Thyroxine was applied independently on alternate days to silkworm of IV and V instar larvae. The treatment of all different concentrations resulted in a significant increase in commercial characters like larval weight, silkgland weight, cocooning percentage, female cocoon weight and its shell weight and male cocoon shell weight and its ratio, cocoon dimension, length of the filament and its weight and oviposition. However, there was no significant change in larvel weight in 5${\mu}$g/ml treated group and larval duration was significantly decrease. But moth emergence percentage and hatching percentage did not show any significant change when compared with that of carrier control.

  • The experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of humidity on the cocoon quality, and 4, 000 lots of cocoon pruduced fot five years in Chin yang, Ha dong, Keo chang, San chung of Kyeong nam, and Sun san, Sang ju, Young poong, An dong of Kyeong buk were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. The reelability ration, the bave length, and raw silk ration were decreased with increasing the humidity in mounting time, and it was remarkably observed when the relative humidity was over 80%. 2. With increasing the reelability ration, the bave length, and raw silk ration were increased, and the longer the bave lenger the bave length was the higher raw silk ration obtained. 3. The average reelability ration for five years in autumn-rearing period was higher than that in spring-rearing period, but the bave length and raw silk ratio was on the contrary from the above. 4. The reelability ration of cocoon produced in the mountainous area was higher than that in the field area but the shorter the bave length, the raw silk ration had no significant difference between those.

  • The silk glands of the spiders are of several types. Among the several types of spider's silk glands, the principal fibers used in constructing the eggcase are products of the tubuliform glands (TBG), which are present only in females. Development of these glands parallels maturations of the ovaries and fat bodies. In order to understand the mechanism of eggcase-silk production, this paper has examined the fine structural changes of the TBG during the period of egg maturation in the garden spider, Argiope aurentia. Between the two kinds of secretory granules observed in the glandular epithelium of the mature TBG, the electron-dense granules which have paracrystalline structure are revealed to be the precursors of the eggcase silk fibers. During the production of eggcase, rapid release of the secretory product occurs at apical surface by the mechanism of apocrine secretion. Moreover, secondary lysosomes appear due to the rapid disorganization of cellular components during the eggcase formation. Examinations of formed fibers indicate a multicomponent internal structure, and electron micrographs reveal each fiber contains numerous electron lucent fibrils embedded in an amorphous electron dense matrix. The secretory precursors are produced as separated vesicles via well-oriented rER, and no Golgi complex has been found in the glandular epithelial cells.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes in gene expression after incubation of cells with soluble fraction from different silk mat layers. A silk cocoon from Bombyx mori was separated into 4 layers of equal thickness. The layers were numbered from 1 to 4 (from the inner to outer layer). Each silk mat was placed into normal saline and collected soluble fraction. They were administered to RAW264.7 cells, and changes in the expression of genes were evaluated by cDNA microarray analysis. Layer 1 and 4 groups showed significantly higher expression of BMP-2 at 8 h after administration of soluble fraction (P < 0.05). Runx2 expression was significantly higher in Layer 4 group at 8h (P < 0.05). The silk mat from the innermost and outermost portion of the silkworm cocoon showed a significant change in the expression of genes that are associated with osteoinduction such as BMP-2 and runx2.

  • In this study, the structural characteristics of sericin recovered from wastewater released from the silk textile industry (Plant sericin) were comparatively analyzed with those of sericin extracted from a silkworm cocoon produced in a laboratory (Lab sericin). To prepare Plant sericin, ethanol was added to wastewater (i.e., a sericin aqueous solution) after the degumming process to remove nonprotein materials, affording a sericin precipitate. To prepare Lab sericin, nonprotein materials were removed from a silkworm cocoon and sericin was subsequently extracted from the cocoon. Lab sericin and Plant sericin exhibited similar solution viscosities, gel strengths, and crystallinity indices, indicative of the similar molecular weights (MWs) of the two sericin samples. In the case of sericin powder, Plant sericin was more crystalline than Lab sericin due to its treatment with ethanol. The findings of this study revealed that sericin recovered from industrial wastewater can be used equally as its MW is similar to that of sericin obtained through laboratory-scale extraction.
