Analysis of SRY-negative XX True Hermaphroditism in an English Cocker Spaniel

  • SRY gene is normally responsible for testis induction, yet testis development can occur in the absence of SRY. In here, we analyzed the SRY-negative sex reversal in cocker spaniel, at 1.5 year-old. The attacked dog was suffered from enlarged clitoris, and resulted in disorder of urination. By surgically approach, enlarged clitoris and one testis, which are apparently seen, are removed. Additionally, thorough the abdomen surgery, uterus and ovary-like mass were removed. The dog had XX, chromosome, showed negative for SRY-gene, and the mass had the ovary-testis structure. In other words, based on the macroscopic, cytogenic, and histological study, we can diagnose the cocker spaniel as SRY-negative sex reversal.

  • Lower motor neuron signs of hind limbs, anus and bladder were identified by history taking and physical examination in the 6.8 year-old mongrel dog and 2.6 year-old Cocker spaniel. The Cocker spaniel, also showed gradual cranial migration of neurologic deficit including respiratory paralysis. On plain radiography and myelography, intervertebral disc extrusion between L2 and L3, the infiltration of contrast medium into the spinal cord and cord swelling were found in the mongrel dog, and infiltration of contrast medium like hollowness of cord parenchyma was observed in the Cocker spaniel. On the basis of clinical signs and radiographic findings, they were diagnosed tentatively as acute myelomalacia. The Cocker spaniel died of respiratory paralysis on the following day. Decompressive surgery was performed on the mongrel dog and the extensive necrosis and hemorrhage were found at surgery. It was euthanized with the owner's consent because of the perceived poor prognosis. Histopathologic examination after autopsy confirmed acute diffuse hemorrhagic myelomalacia with the swelling and the inflammation of axon, showing hemorrhagic changes in the white matter and the grey matter.

A Case of Juvenile Glomerulonephropathy in a Cocker Spaniel Dog (어린 cocker spaniel 종에서 발생한 신부전증)

  • In the present study, we address systemically a case of renal disease developed in a 1 year-old male cocker spaniel dog in terms of clinical signs, clinical pathology and pathological examinations. The animal has been suffered from renal dysfunction signs such as polyuria, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. The dog was very weak and emaciated and had foamy contents with foul-smell in oral cavity. The animals showed notable decrease in the number of red blood cells and severe decreases of hemoglobin and hematocrit with or without changes of mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration values, indicating microcytic or normocytic hypochromatic anemia. In serum chemistry, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, phosphorous, Na and Cl, which are associated with renal function, were dramatically increased. In addition, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate transferase, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, lipase and amylase were also significantly elevated, while K concentration was notably decreased. Urinalysis indicated prominent proteinuria with increase of bilirubin. Despite of symptomatic treatments, the dog was getting worse in healthy condition and dead in the end. At necropsy, both kidneys were brownish, pale, slightly small, and have diffuse, firm and subcapsular pits. Histologically, the kidneys indicated prominent segmental or diffuse interstitial fibrosis in cortex and medulla as well as glomerulonephritis. The clinical signs, clinical pathology and histopathological abnormalities of the young dog presented were consistent with chronic glomerulonephropathy, which was suspected to be a case of familial renal disease in the juvenile cocker spaniel dog.

  • A 2-year-old, female, American cocker spaniel dog presented for a 1-year history of severe ascites, exercise intolerance, tachypnea. At that time, she was in an emergency state. First, the dog was stabilized with oxygen therapy. A diagnosis of cardiac problem was made from history, auscultation, radiograph, ECG, and echocardiography. Jugular pulsation was palpated and a harsh, systolic murmur of tricuspid regurgitation was prominent at the right cardiac apex. Tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) was confirmed with echocardiography, accompanying enormous myocardial hypertrophy. The clinical signs had been improved for 8 months with careful therapy and periodic abdominocentesis, and ascites was well controlled. The situation, however, became worse quickly in a week because the client did not follow our management schedule. Finally, she died due to dyspnea and shock. After the spontaneous death, necropsy and histopathological examination were performed and when we opened the thorax, a significantly large heart was observed. On histopathological findings, grossly myocardium appeared pale initially, then progressed to yellow and white. Microscopically, there was an extensive hemorrhage along with loss of myocardial striations. Interstitial fibrosis and various degenerative alterations in myocytes were also present.

  • An 18-month-old, female American Cocker Spaniel was presented with a cataract of left eye. The left eye was blind, and anterior uveitis was noted on ocular examination. Ultrasonography of the eye revealed a hyperechoic mass with distinct borders in the vitreous indicative of lens fiber or mass lesion extending from ciliary body. The eye was enucleated after ultrasonographic examination. On gross examination, rupture of posterior capsule was noted adjacent to the ciliary body.

A case of hypothyroidism concurrent with myxedema coma in a Cocker spaniel dog

  • A 4-year-old female Cocker spaniel weighing 7.74 kg was presented with a seven-month history of lethargy and skin problems. On the basis of clinical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, electrocardiogram, radiography, ultrasonography, and thyroid function tests, the dog was diagnosed as hypothyroidism. The dog was administered levothyroxine and presented a good response to the therapy. However, uncontrolled for about 6 months, the dog was re-admitted to hospital with depression and three seizure episodes. The dog was diagnosed as hypothyroidism with concurrent myxedema coma and gallbladder mucocele. With fluid therapy and administration of levothyroxine, the dog was successfully controlled for 3 months after starting treatment. This report describes the clinical features and successful treatment of a Cocker spaniel dog with concurrent hypothyroidism and myxedema coma.

  • A 3-year-old, intact female English cocker spaniel dog was evaluated for an acute onset of tetraplegia. Utilizing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the cause of the neurologic deficits was determined to be an peracute hemorrhage of spinal cord. The MR study additionally demonstrated parenchymal hyperintensity on T2weighted images and similarly located hypointensity on T1weighted images. Hemorrhagic myelomalcia was suspected based on these MR characteristics, which was subsequently confirmed histopathologically.

Histopathologic Characterization of Metastatic Ceruminous Gland Adenocarcinoma in a Dog

  • A 13-year-old spayed female American cocker spaniel dog was submitted to an animal hospital with a mass from left ear canal and enlarged left parotid lymph node. Given one-year history of odorous exudates and chronic otitis externa, total ear canal ablation was performed. Grossly, because of the neoplastic mass in both inner and outside of annular cartilage in external ear, vertical ear canal was severely narrowed. Histologically, there were numerous proliferated glands in the ear canal mass. Many neoplastic glands contained secretory vesicles on the free margin and necrotic cellular debris. Severe multifocal necrosis and strong invasion were also observed throughout the mass. Massive metastatic foci of glandular structures originated from ceruminous gland were presented in the enlarged parotid lymph node. Neoplastic glandular epithelia contained PAS-positive diastase-resistant eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells showed positive reactions for cytokeratin (CK) 7 and negative for CK 5/6. Based on the clinical implication and gross findings, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, this case was diagnosed as metastatic ceruminous gland adenocarcinoma in the American cocker spaniel.

Systemic Amyloidosis in a Cocker Spaniel (Cocker spaniel 견에서 발생한 전신성 아밀로이드증)

  • A 7-month-old female Cocker spaniel dog was examined for chronic anemia. Based on information provided by local clinician the patient had had a 'flu-like' illness three weeks before submission of the sample, had a fever of $40.9^{\circ}C$, and had mild hepatomegaly. This dog had also history of weight loss, vomiting, anorexia, dehydration, lethargy, ascites, polyuria and polydipsia. A blood smear showed non-regenerative anemia. Thoracic radiograph showed irregular shadowing in the left mid-zone. Serum biochemical results showed a hypercalcemia, azotemia, hypercholesterolemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoalbuminemia, and metabolic acidosis. Results of urinalysis showed proteinuria, slightly acidic with isosthenuria. Histopathologic examination of tissue sections revealed amyloid deposits in multiple sites including kidneys, liver and spleen.

Serial Ultrasonographic Appearance of Postpartum Uterine Involution in Cocker Spaniel Bitches (Cocker Spaniel 개에서 분만 후 자궁수복의 연속적 초음파상)

  • This study was undertaken to determine the normal appearance of the postpartum uterine involution. Postpartum changes in uterine shape, architecture, echogenicity and diameter were monitored with ultrasonography in 8 Cocker spaniel bitches. The excretory period of vaginal discharges in 8 normal bitches of uterine involution was finished completely at 23.20$\pm$2.77 days (Mean$\pm$SD) postpartum. The short axis shape of the uterus was varied from polygonal to circular. This lasted until 1600$\pm$2.12 days Postpartum, during which time the short axis uterine shape gradually changed to circular. Also, the long axis shape of the uterus was created a beaded appearance of the horns until 25.60$\pm$2.51 days postpartum. The uterine diameter was decreased not only in the placental sites from 24.20$\pm$2.06mm at 1 day to 13.18$\pm$0.84mm at 7 days postpartum, but also in the interplacental sites 14.26$\pm$2.22mm at 1 day, 9.81$\pm$0.7mm at 7 days postpartum. There was a general trend of decreasing uterine diameter, which occurred more rapidly at the placental sites. In conclusion, normal postpartum uterine involution in Cocker spainel bitches appeared to be completed around 68 days postpartum by gross findings such as vaginal discharges, and by ultrasongraphic findings, uterine shape and echogenicity.
