  • Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), important pests of agricultural crops in Korea, including eggplant and potato, were collected in the Kyonggido area each summer from 1983 to 1986. Data were recorded for rates of parasitism against each host stage and seasonal activity. The parasitoids NothoserPhus afissae (Watanabe), (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae), Uga menoni (Kerrich), (Hymenoptera: Cha1cididae), and Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from the host insects. A solitary larval parasitoid, N. afissae, was reared from 2nd to 4th instar brval hosts, with parasitism being highest in the 3rd instar collection. U. menoni, a solitary larval-pupal parasitoid, was reared from 3rd instar larvae to pupae, and parasitism was highest in the pupal collection. N. afissae and U. menoni occurred during June to September. N. afissae showed relatively high parasitism during the entire study period as compared with other species, while parasitization by U. menoni was highest in July. P. foveolatus, a gregarious larval parasitoid, did not generally appear until September, although it appeared in early August in the southern part of Korea. The number of P. foveolatus emerging from a mummy varied, ranging from 7 to 26 (mean = 13. 8).

  • The multicolored Asian lady beetles (Harmonia axyridis) has characteristic color patterns, which show great variability within species. Up to now, it has been well known that main factors affected on individual color pattern variations in the population of H axyridis are external, physical, and environmental characteristics. Indeed, there is as yet no evidence to indicate whether the variation is genetic or environmental factors. Also the factors which produce this variation are unknown in this species, although it is suspected that much of the variation is under genetic control. However, the genetic relationships among many of color types were investigated by observing the progeny of each particular pairs. It is worth mentioning a few particular breeding cases to illustrate certain facets of variability, and to indicate examples suitable for genetic analysis of the color pattern variation.

  • Biological attachment device is optimized in insect legs for attachment onto the variety of natural substrate. We have studied the microstructural characteristics of the tarsal appendages in the ladybug Harmonia axyridis using scanning electron microscopy to reveal the attachment system of their legs. The attachment devices are composed of claws and adhesive pads. The claws are connected with pretarsal segment, and their apical diverged hooks are developed to hold rough substrates. In contrast, the adhesive pads have an adhesive function onto smooth surface. The pads are interspersed at the ventral part of each tarsomere, and are composed of two kinds of hairy setae. The discoid tip seta (DtS) has a spoon-shaped endplate usually with a rounded concave structure, whereas the pointed tip seta (PtS) has a pointed tip, usually with a hooked endplate. While the PtS is broadly localized concentrically on the marginal area of both the proximal and distal pads, the DtS can be seen at the central areas of each adhesive pad except for the hind legs. Our findings demonstrate the presence of the direction-dependence pattern of the fibrillar system as well as a functional modification of the tenent setae to achieve proper contact with almost any kind of substrates.

  • The aphidophagous lady beetle, Harmonia axyridis, is induced to undergo reproductive diapause by low temperature treatment. The diapause of the adult beetle can be maintained without supplying the diet up to 5 months at $4^{\circ}C$. The diapause can be induced any time including during the summer, allowing the beetle to be supplied to the field for the control of aphids through the year. Fecundity and longevity after the reproductive diapause is though to be satisfactory enough for the control of aphids in the field, Methoprene, an analog of reproductive hormone of JH, increases the early fecundity of the beetle.

  • This experiment was conducted to select the selective aphicides to Myzus persicae adults and its predator, Harmonia axyridis adults. The effects of the selective aphicides on the longevity, fecundity and hatchability of predaror were examined. All experiments were tested at the recommended concentration of those aphicides. Mortalities of adult H. axyridis to pirimicarb (162.5 ppm), fenvalerate (50 ppm) and endosulfan (577.5ppm) were shown 0, 20 and 22.5%, respectively. Endosulfan and fenvalerate showed the mortality above 48% to eggs and larvae H. axyridis, but pirimicarb was not toxic to those stages. Pirimicarb did not affect to the longevity, fecundity and hatchability of H. axyridis, but endosulfan and fenvalerate severely affected to the predators. From these results, pirimicarb can be used in biological controls for M. persicae.

  • Esterase activity was observed after pesticides treatment in eggs of H. axyridis to select low toxicity pesticide. Egg esterases of H. axyridis were examined using an esterase substrate(${\alpha}$-naphthyl acetate). Three esterase isozymes were detected and the activities were inhibited by organophosphorus insecticide (Chlorpyrifos and Phenthoate), organochlorine insecticide(Methidation), triazole fungicide(Hexaconazole and Triflumizole), and pyrimidine fungicide(Nuarlmol). Fecundity and hatchability in adults and eggs of H. axyridis were examined on selected pesticides. Fecundity and hatchability were significantly reduced from H. axyridis adults and eggs treated with the pesticides and the fungicides showed strong inhibition of esterase isozymes activities. However, we also observed the pesticides and the fungicides showed low or non-inhibition of esterase isozymes activities affected on fecundity and hatchability in adults and eggs.

  • Experiments were conducted to study the integrated control of one of the major pests of citrus, the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri (McGregor). Studies were conducted in Seogwipo, Cheju Island, 1973-1976. Results obtained were: 1. The major peak of citrus red mite occurrence was mid-July to mid-August. 2. Standard field populations of citrus red mite were also high in September, October, and November. 3. A total of 10 species of natural enemies of citrus red mite were found. These included; Oligota yasumatusi Kistner, Anystis baccarum L., Hemerobiid sp., Semidalis albate E., Orius sp., Agistemus terminalis Q., 3 species of lady beetles (Coccinellidae), and one unidentified species of predacious mite. 4. Annual occurrence of citrus med mite tended to decrease in unsprayed fields, but increased in fields receiving standard treatments. 5. With fungicides, there was an increase in mite populations associated with use of Bordeaux mixture and copperpowder sprays. Streptomycin, however, did not effect on increase in mite numbers.

  • The multicolored Asian ladybird beetle (Harmonia axyridis) has been commonly used with biological control agents for control of several kinds of aphids in agroecosystems. Also, environment friendly agricultural materials have been commonly applied in crop fields because the government held down pesticide application and environment friendly agricultures are gradually increased with consumer's desires. The multicolored Asian ladybird beetles may be directly or indirectly under the influence of environment friendly agricultural materials In crop fields. The insecticidal environment friendly agricultural materials (IEFAMs) might be saff against each developmental stage of multicolored Asian ladybird beetle. Fungicidal environment friendly agricultural materials (FEFAMs) had a miner effect to each developmental stage of multicolored Asian ladybird beetle with the exception of FEFAM A. Environment friendly agricultural materials contained useful soil microorganisms (EFAMSMs) C and H might be down the hatching rate of eggs, and EFAMSM A and F had a killing effect to 1st instar of lady beetles. Environment friendly agricultural materials contained plant extracts (EFAMPEs) A and D might be suffered effect a deathblow of egg hatching with lady beetles. Otherwise, there was a miner effect to lady beetles with the rest of tested environment friendly agricultural materials.

  • The seasonal fluctuation of the large 28-spotted lady beetle, Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky), was observed in potato fields of Gangneung region, Gangwondo Province. The effects of their leaf consumption over a 24 hour period and developmental periods by different temperatures were investigated, and then the developmental threshold (DT) and effective cumulative temperature (ET) of each stage were calculated. Various developmental stages of H. vigintioctomaculata were captured in the fields from May to September, with three peaks in late May, late June, and late August. Leaf consumption by larval stages increased with the development of instar. The 4th instar larvae consumed potato leaves much more than other stages. Egg hatchability and emergence rate of H. vigintioctomaculata were lower at $10^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but higher at around $20{\sim}23^{\circ}C$. The developmental periods of each stage became shorter as temperature increased; 90 days at $10^{\circ}C$, 40 days at $20^{\circ}C$ and 25 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Base on developmental velocity to temperature, calculated DT and ET were $7.3^{\circ}C$ and 83.
