  • The Chromosomes of five cobitid fishes, Cobitis taenia taenia, C. taenia lutheri, C. taenia striata, C. longicorpus and C. koreensis were studied. The karyotypic studies were based on the observations from the flame-drying preparations. The results obtained such as the number of somatic chromosomes, the type of chromosomes according to the centromeric loci and the number of chromosomal arm(AN) were as follows: C. longicorpus, 2n=50, 12m-8sm-30a, AN=70; C. koreensis, 2n=50, 10m-12sm-28a, AN=72; C. taenia taenia, 2n=48, 14m-4sm-30a, AN=66: C. taenia lutheri, 2n=50, 10m-6sm-34a, AN=66; and C. taenia striata, 2n=50, 10m-6sm-34a, AN=66. Peculiarly, in the case of C. taenia lutheri the chromosome number of somatic diploid was found to be 48-51, however, the number of chromosomal arm was 66, irrespective of the difference in the numbers of each somatic genome. It was confirmed there exists the Robertsonian event, one of the chromosomal polymorphism in C.t. lutheri. It was remarked taxonomically that the karyotype of C. taenia taenia of Korea having 48 diploid chromosomes was not identical with that of Europe and Japan with 50 chromosomes. Based on the karyotype analysis the Korean cobitid fishes can be classified roughly into three species groups according to arm numbers and diploid numbers; 1) C. taenia taenia, C. taenia lutheri, C. taenia striata 2) C. koreensis, C. longicor pus, C. rotundicaudata and 3) C. granoei.

  • Sinca early 1930' Colitis taenia striate were introduced to the Donsgjin in Chollabukdo, where it hybridized with an endemic subspecies C. tiutheri. Protein electrophoresis revealed high levels of hybridization with intensive backcrossing occupied approximately 20 kilometers of the river. This is roughly one-half of tech historic range of the endemic species. The average frequency of introduced alleles of three diagnostic loci ranged 0.03-0.46 among 11 sites in tech svrnpatric area. Clinal patterns in allele frequencies suggest C. tiutheri were introduced in an upper reaches of the Dongjin and downstream dispersal of the introduced alleles followed. There is little linkasedisequilibrium between the diagnostic loci, suggesting the nuclear genomes of tech two subspecies are randomly associated. The evidence presented here and previously supports recognition of C. t. striata and C. t. lutheri as the typical subspecies.

  • 2, 300 specimens of Cobitis taenia lutheri were collected at the Samchon stream, Kui-myon, Wanju-gun, Chollabuk-do province from December, 1984 to November, 1985. Sex ratio and specific lateral color pattern of this subspecies were investigated. During the spawning season, May to Augustm sex dimorphisms in lateral color pattern were remarkable, that is the striped type appeared in most of males and the spotted type largely in femals. Besides the spwaning season both male and female showed the spotted type. These seasonal varaitions of the lateral color pattern were considered to be a significant biological characteristics in this taxon.

  • A new species of Cobitid fish, Cobitis longicorpus is described, based upon many specimens from several tributaries of the Seomjin River situated in the south western part in Korea. Cobitis longicorpus was previously reported as the crossband type of C. taenia by all ichthyologists in Korea. This is distributed in the Seomjin River and characterized by the distinctive cross-band color pattern, the black spots at the back of its opercula, and the structure of lamina circularis in male.

  • Morphometric, band-pattern and electrophoretic analysis on Cobitis taenia complex were performed to investigate the morphological and genetic differentiation and to clarify their taxonomic status. Intermediate types of band-pattern (C and D type) were more frequently expressed than that of types of C. t. taenia(type A) and C. t. lutheri (type B). Sexual dimorphism of band-pattern was observed not only in C. t. taenia(type A) and C. t. lutheri(type B). Sexual dimorphism of band-pattern was observed not only in C. t. lutheri but also in C. t. taenia and C. t. striata as well. Discriminant function analysis based on 19 morphological characters shows no significant differences among C. taenia complex. The degree of genic variation of C. t. striata was higher ( =1.48, P=31.2%, HD=0.009) than those of C. t. striata was higher( =1.48, P=31.2%, HD=0.082 and HG=0.009) than those of C. t. lutheri ( =1.37, P=2.7%, HD=0.058 and HG=0.065). The average genetic similarities between C. t. lutheri and C. t. taenia-C. t. striata were S=0.62 and S=0.66 respectively and these values indicate that C. t. tanenia has evolved specific level of differentiation. C. t. striata and C. t. lutheri show subspecifc level of close genetic similarity (S=0.82). Based on the divergent time estimate (Nei, 1975) it is assumed that C. t. tanenia was branched off from the other subspecies about two million years before present (MYBP) and C. t. striata and C. t. lutheri were differentiated about 0.6 MYBP. The use of C. sinesis an the scientific name for the Korean C. t. taenia, proposed by Kim and Lee (1988) seems incorrect since they are quite different in the structure of lamina circularis (Vladycov, 1935), the external morphology and distribution (Cheng and Zheng, 1987) and the chromosome number(Yu et al., 1989). Kim and Lee(1988) also argued that C.t. striata and C. t. lutheri should be treated as distinct species but the present study and other reports (Kim and Lee, 1984; Kim and Yang, 1993) do not support it. We conclude that C. t. taenia is a good species and C. t. striata and C. t. lutheri are subspecific status. Their scientific names should be revised in the future.
