In the present paper, a method which enhances the circulation of harbor waters by using wave energy was investigated. The overflow levee was selected as a coastal structure helping the harbor circulation, and was applied to Jeju-outer-port site so as to estimate its effectiveness quantitatively in probabilistic point of view. It was assumed that sea water influx rate through the overflow levee into the harbor depended upon wave height and tidal level and a functional relationship among them was calculated using the results of hydraulic experiment. The probability distribution of water influx could be obtained from hindcasted wave data and measured tidal elevations at Jeju harbor. The Gamma distribution was appeared to best fit the estimated influx distribution, and the optimal location of the levee was discussed. Finally, water quality purification effect was investigated by computing the contaminant material dispersion according to whether the levee was or not.

Herein the surge-heave-pitch motion of a ship has been analyzed within the framework of linear potential theory. The ship is assumed slender weakly moored along the centerline of a rectangular harbor with constant depth and straight coastline. The method of matched asymptotic expansion is us-ed to obtain the leading-order solution. The ship and harbor responses to incident long waves can be re-presented in terms of Green's function, which is the solution of the Helmholtz equation satisfying necessary boundary conditions. Numerical results clearly indicate the importance of the surge motion.
In order to investigate the distribution of phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Chuksan Harbor, East Sea, the abundance and biomass of phytoplankton have been evaluated through seasonal interval sampling from April 2000 to October 2002. A total of 363 different phytoplankton species was observed and most of them were composed of diatoms. The mean abundance and chlorophyll-a concentration of phytoplankton during the study period ranged from 56 ${\times}$$10^3$ to 720 ${\times}$$10^3$ cells $L^{-1}$ and from 0.78 to 3.29 μg chl-a $L^{-1}$, respectively. The relative contribution of the size-fractionated phytoplankton to phytoplankton community showed difference according to seasons. The average contribution of nano-phytoplankton(<20 $\mu$m) was over 50% in the total abundance and biomass of the phytoplankton. Our results show that nano-phytoplankton play an important role in the southern coastal waters of the East Sea. And the environmental factors such as suspended substances, phosphates and silicates were positively correlated with the abundances and biomass of phytoplankton.
This paper presents the depth-mean monthly variation in the circulation of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea computed using a robust diagnostic model. The mixed three-dimensional finite-difference Galerkin function model developed by Lee et at. (2000, 2001) has been extended to take into account baroclinic effects and then used to calculate the depth-mean flow fields as part of the results. In addition to M2 tide and oceanic flows previously considered, the model has been driven by the monthly mean wind stresses from Na and Seo (1998), the density gradient calculated based on by GDEM data set released by US Navy. Model results are very encouraging in that many of observed features including Jeju Cyclonic Gyre and frontal eddies along the shelfside of the Kuroshio main stream and west of Kyushu, are satisfactorily reproduced and are expected to be of value in interpreting observations in various oceanograhic disciplines.
Five parameters such as the entrance size of the front wall, conduit size, wave period, wave height and the width of water pool were selected to estimate the inflow rate, which is basic and essential input data to design seawater exchange breakwater with a submerged mound by conducting hydraulic model experiments. In the results of multiple regression analysis, log-log equation showed a good agreement rather than linear equation and the estimation of inflow rate was well done with only two parameters except entrance size of the front wall, wave period and the width of water pool. Finally, non-dimensional flow rate equation is derived.
When pile foundation is constructed by dynamic method, it is desirable to perform monitoring of drivability with pile penetration. Dynamic pile monitoring yields information regarding driving hammer, cushion, pile and soil behaviour that can be used to confirm the assumptions of wave equation analysis. In this study, dynamic monitoring of the steel pipe pile was performed with Pile Driving Analyser (PDA). The PDA utilizes the wave propagation theory to compute numerous variables which describe the conditions of the hammer-pile-soil system in real-time and following each hammer impact. This approach allows immediate field verification of hammer performance, driving efficiency, and estimation of pile bearing capacity. A series of PDA test were performed at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS) located in southeast of Marado, a southernmost small island south of Jeju Island. The drilling core sediments of Ieodo subsoil are composed of mud and sand, showing lamination and wavy or lenticular bedding, which were often bioturbated. This paper summarizes the results of PDA tests which were applied in measurement and estimation of large diameter open ended steel pipe pile driven by steam hammer, Vulcan-560 and MRBS-4600, at the marine sediments.

Recently, the harbor function is being reconsidered with the viewpoint of logistics, and various efforts are given to enhance the harbor performance agglomerating all procedures of stevedoring, treatment and background transportation of freight. The harbor performance largely depends on the efficient combination of the engineering part of harbor construction and the forthcoming logistics part. It may thus be anticipated in the future that the design concept of harbor construction will be transferred to a comprehensive consideration integrating both engineering and logistics parts to maximize the ultimate harbor operational performance. In the present study, various indicators for assessing a modem container terminal performance are presented far the purpose of helping harbor engineers understand the fundamental logistics through container handling operations. The indicators are compared, analyzed and compiled, by referring to the practical cases of Busan and Gwangyang ports as an illustration.

A hyperbolic numerical model with multi-directional waves has been used to investigate harbor tranquility in Pohang New Harbor. Comparing numerical results with field data measured at two stations in the harbor, it was found that use of input condition of multi-directional waves is superior to the use of uni-directional waves. Calculations with unidirectional wave input give errors of about 12% at St. P2 and 26% at St. P3, while calculations with multi-directional wave input give errors of 4 % at St. P2 and. 14% at St. P3. Using the input condition of multi-directional waves, we investigate the tranquility of Pohang New Harbor with two layouts : the condition in 1994 when the downtime at the 7th pier was often reported and the condition in 1996 when the 4th disposal site was constructed. The numerical results show that the problem of downtime at the 7th pier cannot be solved by the construction of the 4th disposal site.

It is well known that whcn waves propagating on a shallow water suddenly encounter a much deeper water they do not propagate further but are reflected. If we apply this phenomenon to a harbor by making the harbor depth much greater than outside, we could improve the harbor tranquillity by making the waves impinging into the harbor be reflected at the harbor entrance. In the present paper, first we apply the numerical models based' on the mild-slope equation and extended mild-slope equation to calculate the long wave resonances in a rectangular harbor with a very large depth discontinuity at its entrance to find that the difference between the models is almost negligible. By applying the numerical model to a realistic model harbor whose inside is entirely dredged, it is found that the effect of dredging is insignificant when the inside depth is twice the outside one but tripled inside depth significantly reduces the long waves of period of one to five minutes whieh may exert a bad influence on ship motion. Moreover, even when only a portion of the harbor basin is dredged, the cffect of dredging in the dredged area is found to be comparable to that of entire dredging, showing that the dredging of harbor basin can be a countenncasure for harbor resonance.

In this paper, the harbor tranquility problem is analysed by an improved boundary integral equation method. The effect of the diffracted wave transformation induced by the breakwater and structures located at a harbor mouth is considered. Partial reflection concept is also used to consider energy dissipation effects. The present model is verified by comparing the results of the model for rectangular and semi-circular harbors with the analytic solutions. they show a reasonable agreement. Also the wave height distribution of the HUPO harbor computed using the present model agree well to those from the previous hydraulic model tests. It also shows a good agreement with the results from the time-dependent mild slope equation model.
