The Korean fishery encountered a difficulty situation, due to the new regime of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the decreasing fisheries resources in Korean waters. In addition, the coastal areas are deteriorated by industrial wastes, sewage, farming wastes and pollution from aquaculture. In this situation, it is necessary to study the TAC (total allowable catch) - based management system, the development of fishing gears and appropriate fishing methods for stock conservation, and the automation system of fishing gears for improving the efficiency of fisheries. The objective of this study is to look for an appropriate system in marine production and resource management under the new UNCLOS (United National Convention for the Law of the Sea) regime for subjects in fishing gears and methods, production system, and information, and fisheries resources management. The results of this study could be used as scientific information to maintain and develop the Korean fisheries and to establish fisheries policy for the management of fisheries resources in Korean waters.

Given data about the annual fishery yield of the common squid Todarodes pacificus, and the catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data from multiple fisheries from 2000-2018, we applied a Bayesian state - space assessment model for the squid population. One of our objectives was to do a stock assessment, simultaneously incorporating CPUE data from the following three fisheries, (i) large trawl, (ii) jigger, and (iii) large purse seine, which comprised on average a year about 65% of all fisheries, allowing possible correlations to be reflected. Other objectives were to consider both observation and process errors and to apply objective priors of parameters. The estimated annual exploitable biomass was in the range of 3.50×105 to 1.22×106 MT, the estimated intrinsic growth rate was 1.02, and the estimated carrying capacity was 1,151,259 MT. Comparison with available results from stock assessment of independently analyzed single fisheries revealed a large difference from the estimated values, suggesting that stock assessment based on multiple fisheries should be performed.

In recent years, the rate of mean sea level rise is increasing rapidly from the phenomena of global warming, together with the increasing trend of the storm scale. The issue of sea level rise is multifaceted and produces a range of environmental problems. Especially, high tides and the tidal currents become higher, and wave base increases, so the energy received at the coastal boundary may increase. This brings that many coastal environments go into disequilibrium, such as damages to the structures, erosion, and deposition Similarly it was known that the problems of nearshore processes and damage of berth and counter facilities during storm period had appeared at the small fishery port. Here we try to analyze the impact of the rearrangement of counter facilities and berth layout adopted for tranquility of its'inner harbor. Because this harbor is being connected to channel and open sea, the rearrangement of the structures might affect to the current speed and direction and wave height, so do to the sea bottom undulation. Therefore, we made model test for the several layouts of the berth and breakwater in this area.

To investigate the temporal distribution of planktonic larvae of Tegillarca granosa and Anadara kagoshimensis in the Boseong coastal waters of South Korea, samples of planktonic bivalve larvae were taken from the coastal waters from June to September 2018 (this consisted of monthly sampling in June, July, and September with three- or four-day interval sampling in August). The samples were analyzed using metagenomic next-generation sequencing methods (target gene: mitochondria cytochrome c oxidase 1 region). In this study, a total of 21 bivalve operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were detected with the most abundant bivalve OTUs (relative mean abundance >1%) belonging to Magallana sikamea, Xenostrobus atratus, Musculista senhousia, Magallana gigas, Sinonovacula constricta, Anadara kagoshimensis, Kurtiella aff. bidentata, and Tegillarca granosa. In particular, Tegillarca granosa and Anadara kagoshimensis (the main fishery resources on the Boseong coast) accounted for 0.51-12.50% (average 4.00%) and 0.01-12.50% (1.92%), respectively. The planktonic bivalve larvae were most abundant from July to August. Anadara kagoshimensis was most abundant in early August but rare in the other investigated periods, whereas Tegillarca granosa was more abundant in late August. Bivalve larvae monitoring is important to predict the production of bivalve fisheries. Therefore, intensive monitoring is needed to understand the changes in planktonic bivalve larvae because potentially rapid turnover can respond to the ecological interaction of spawning bivalves.

The spawning characteristics of Hexagrammos agrammus and Hexagrammos otakii was directly observed in coastal regions of the Yellow Sea and South Sea during the spawning seasons using scuba diving. The territorial male H. agrammus showed different body size, nuptial coloration and nest location compared to those of H. otakii, even though both species caring egg masses were found at the almost same depths. In the West sea, a relatively small guardian H. agrammus male protects 1-2 egg masses laid on a clump of red algae within his territory. The territorial males in red nuptial coloration and their egg masses were well camouflaged in their surroundings. Contrary to H. agammus, a guardian H. otakii male in yellowish nuptial coloration protects 4-8 egg masses in a nest. In addition, their nests were located on the relatively open environments such as discarded fishing nets, rock crevices and a clump of algae. The results of present study shows that even though both of two species belonged to Hexagrammidae, they have different strategies for spawning and protecting their egg masses.

The survey was conducted to investigate biomass and distribution of fisheries resources using a quantitative echo sounder and a fixed gillnet around Marado coast of Jeju to obtain the scientific basic data for dispute resolution with a large purse seine fishery and coastal fishing and policy establishment of reasonable fisheries resources. Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted six times (November 28~29, 2015 (night), February 23~24, 2016 (night) and March 3~4, 2016 (night/day), March 30~31, 2016 (night/day)) using a quantitative echo sounder. The pelagic fish densities were relatively higher around Marado in November 2015, February 2016 and March 3~4, 2016. However, demersal fish densities were relatively higher in Jeju coastal waters on March 30~31, 2016. Catch data using fixed gill net were used to calculate biomass. Based on the hydroacoustic data, fish length-weight function and target strength information of dominant fish, the biomass of fishes were estimated as follow: 5.64 ton CV = 70.2% at night on November 28-29 2015, 7.14 ton CV = 35.8% of pelagic fish and 530.77 ton CV = 34.6% of demersal fishes at night on February 23-24 2016, 2.34 ton CV = 56.7% of pelagic fish and 571.93 ton CV = 40.3% of demersal fish at daytime, 1.39 ton CV = 48.4% of pelagic fish and 194.59 ton CV = 54.3% of demersal fish at night on March 3~4 2016, 0.37 ton CV = 72.9% of pelagic fish and 338.79 ton CV = 99.7% of demersal fish at daytime, 0.24 ton CV = 21.3% of pelagic fish and 68.61 ton CV = 53.8% of demersal fish at night on March 30~31 2016.

In order to modify the construction of gizzard shad coastal purse seine net with possible to the laborsaving of fishing operation in the coastal small fishing vessels, the model experiments were carried out on the model nets for several conventional nets using in the field and the experimental nets was manufactured as 1/100 and 1/60 of the full scale net. The results obtained are summarized as follows;1. In the case of the conventional net and reduction rate 75% in conventional net with purse line the fishing efficiency decreased, the lead line was upward for the surface and the pursing depth of pursing line was very shallow to 2∼3m. 2. In the case of the net having maximum depth in center part designed in this study, the length of float and lead line was 60% of conventional net, the depth of net was fixed 20m to selvage line of the both of the end and extend gradually with 50m, 40m, 30m to the center. Among the these net, depth of pursing line was 20∼23m for 50m and 7∼15m for 40m, 30m the depth of net. These results were suitable for interception of fish school in fishing ground, but several problems will be caused by the depth and current of fishing ground.
Feeding habits of the large yellow croaker, Larimichthys crocea, was studied using 816 specimens collected by large pair-trawl fishery from June 2021 to May 2022 in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. The range of total length was 19.8~57.4 cm. Using the IRI, Pisces were mainly prey component constituted 57.5%. Euphausiacea and Macrura were important prey component constituted 23.2% and 18.7%, respectively. There was a significant difference in the change in diet composition by size group. As the L. crocea grew, the feeding rate of Euphausiacea decreased and the feeding rate of Pisces increased. There were also significant differences in the changes in diet composition by seasonal group. The most important prey species for L. crocea in the winter and spring were Pisces, in the summer it was Macrura, and in the fall it was Euphausiacea. As a result of analyzing the feeding relationship between size groups and season groups, L. crocea showed significant differences in the interaction between size groups and season groups.

This study was determined to analysis marine environmental and phytoplankton monitoring in Wando coastal waters in August during the period of 2009-2010 and provided the basic environmental data against Southwest Sea of Korea. In August, 2009, the distribution of water temperature and salinity showed an unique characteristics for all of stations, which was associated with a long duration of rainfall after July, 2009 and a lack of sunshine. In the lower of August, 2010, the stratification of water temperature and salinity was shown, which was caused by an intensive sunshine after the middle of August, 2010. Gangjin Bay and Gogeundo waters showed a highly different water temperature and transparency. It is thought that two regions have a distinct water mass and characteristics. In dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation were higher according to higher water depth regardless of stations. In August, 2009, different dominant species occurred that Gangjin Bay showed a higher cell density of diatom, but Gonyaulax polygramma played an important role in dominant species in Gogeundo waters. It is associated with the introduction red tide water of G. polygramma occurring to southern coastal water in August, 2009. In August, 2010, diatom was extremely higher cell density compared with that of dinoflagellate that regarded as adaptive microrganism against higher quantity of suspended solid in Wando waters. Although Wando has a record of Cochlodinium red tide, this species may be difficult to grow and persist. Dominant species, diatom, play an important role in food organism for shellfish and forming a ecological lineage.

To determine the predation rate of threadsail filefish, we conducted feeding experiment of threadsail filefish, Stephanolepis cirrhifer on different life stages (medusae, ephyrae, and polyps) of Aurelia aurita s.l. in the laboratory. All size groups of threadsail filefish actively preyed on moon jellyfish Aurelia aurita s.l. and predation rate was proportional to the wet weight of threadsail filefish. Average wet weight 0.5, 1, 2.2 g of threadsail filefish preyed on average $0.77{\pm}0.51g\;fish^{-1}h^{-1}$ of medusae. Average wet weight 150 and 344 g of threadsail filefish preyed on $9.26{\pm}1.61$ and $15.89{\pm}3.67g\;fish^{-1}h^{-1}$ of medusae respectively. In ephyrae and polyps, average wet weight 3.7 g of juvenile of threadsail filefish preyed on 100 ephyrae within 10 minutes and average wet weight 2.2 g of juvenile of threadsail filefish preyed on $5.73{\pm}0.59$ polyps $g^{-1}$ of fish $h^{-1}$. Whereas adults of threadsail filefish did not prey on polyps. In feeding preference experiments to elucidate whether threadsail filefish prey on moon jellyfish in the sea, adults of threadsail filefish preyed on mostly oysters (ca. 60%) and polychaetes (ca. 80%). Medusae were consumed only 2% of total. However, juvenile of threadsail filefish preyed on ephyrae and polyps as well as mysid shrimps. Besides, polyps were consistently consumed during the experiment. Although juvenile of threadsail filefish consumed all kinds of prey, they ceased feeding at temperatures below $11^{\circ}C$, which suggests that possibility of predation on ephyrae may be very low in the sea because ephyrae are released at low temperatures below $11^{\circ}C$ from March to April. Whereas polyps are inhabitable in all seasons in Korean coastal waters, juvenile of threadsail filefish may prey on polyps in the sea. These results suggest that removing moon jellyfish at polyp stage by using juvenile of threadsail filefish is the most effective way for extermination of moon jellyfish.
