  • In this paper, we analyzed the relationships between the fishing ground formation and the sea condition information, surface, mid and bottom layer temperature that is necessary for fishing point selection of angling to catch squid in the East Sea. There was a little differences between temperature measured by every fishing boat on fishing operating and prompt reports of fishing and sea condition about fishing ground formation of angling. And then the result examined by using SST that is a important information of sea condition for the fishing position selection follows as ; We knew, even if the differencs of sea condition each year, SST with a lot of fishing boats was generally within the extnet of $2^{\circ}C$. But the result examined by the limit time about the temperature of mid and bottom layer for the groups of fishing boats not to measure and for the near sea measurement to be done only within EEZ waters follows as ; About the temperature of 50m layer on early in June and July in operating waters of the group of fishing boats, the fishing ground was formed from $10^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ between warm waters and cold waters, afterwards we can seize that the fishing ground was moving to waters from $5^{\circ}C$ to $8^{\circ}C$ at near of polar front. In the coastal waters, we knew that fishing ground is formed to waters from $10^{\circ}C$ to $12^{\circ}C$ at the southern of polar front about the temperature of 50m layer.

  • In order to understand the seasonal variations of species composition of fish in the Goseong, middle East Sea of Korea, we surveyed fish fauna using set net during 2 years. In this study, a total of 77 taxa belonging to 40 families were collected and 75 species were identified. The dominant family were Tetraodontidae and Pleuronectidae, and the dominant species were Arctoscopus japonicus, Konosirus punctatus, Stephanolepis cirrhifer, Thamnaconus modestus, and Trachurus japonicus. The results of the hierarchical clustering using the number of individuals of collected species showed that they are divided into three seasonal groups: Group A (Jan.~Apr.), Group B (May~Jun., Nov.~Dec.), Group C (Jul.~Oct.). The sea surface temperature (SST) was higher than the results of previous studies in winter and spring, and species composition in spring have changed from cold-water species to the warm-water species, recently. The species composition has become similar to the that of southern Gangwon-do regions (Samcheok and Gangneung) of the previous studies. The species diversity of family Tetraodontidae has increased, which is estimated to have an effect on increase in SST and the quantity of entering the East Sea. Therefore, we assumed that the change of species composition is related to the extension of northern distribution limits and survival temperature, and abundant preys. Therefore, it is necessary that an efficient resource management policy as well as the ways of commercially use of migratory warm-water fish, rapidly.

  • The evolution of intricate and striking patterns of suspended sediments (SS), which are created by certain physical dynamics in the East China and Yellow Seas, has been investigated using satellite ocean color imageries and vertical profiles of particle attenuation and backscattering coefficients. The structure of these patterns can reveal a great deal about the process underlying their formation. Sea surface temperature (SST) analyzed from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) thermal infrared data were used to elucidate the physical factors responsible for the evolution of suspended sediment patterns in the East China Sea. The concomitant patterns of suspended sediments were tracked from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) ocean color data. The detailed examination about these patterns gave birth to the definition of the evolution of suspended sediments (SS) into four stages: (1) Youth or Infant stage, (2) Younger stage, (3) Mature stage, and (4) Old stage. We describe about the three directional forces of the tidal currents, ocean warm currents and estuarine circulations that lead to occurrence of various stages of the evolution of suspended sediments that increase turbidity at high levels through out the water column of the inner and outer shelf areas during September to April. The occurrence of these four stages could be repeatedly observed. In contrast, vertical profiles of the particle attenuation ($c_{p}$) and backscattering ($b_{bp}$) coefficients displayed obvious patterns of the propagation of suspended sediment plume from the southwestern coastal sea that leads to eventual collision with the massive sediment plume originating from the Yangtze banks of the East China Sea.

  • The cold water event near Gampo-Ulgi coast in summers between 1987 and 1994 are studied using sea surface temperature records at the coastal stations, ocean winds measured by SSM/I and AVHRR SST images. The response time of the cold water events by upwelling is less than two days and surface cold water expands up to the Ulleung Island. An analysis of 61 upwelling favorable winds indicates that the surface water temperature drops more than $1^{\circ}C\;in\;80\%$ of the south-westerly wind events. The linear correlation coefficient between wind impulses and the maximum temperature drops is good (0.6). It is found that the major cause of the cold water events is the along-shore wind in summer. The bottom topography and off-shore direction of the East Korean Warm Current by the potential vorticity conservation near Gampo coast also contribute the formation of the cold water along the southeast coast of Korea.

  • The distribution pattern of macrobenthic polychaete worms and their feeding guild structures were investigated along the coastal region off Kunsan (southeastern Yellow Sea) during the winter season. The polychaete worms, the most dominant infauna, comprised 54 species in 30 families and showed their mean density of 300. indir./m$^2$). Dominant species in the study area were Stermaspis scutata, Lumbrineris cruzensis, Notomastus sp., Nephtys polybranchia, Praxillella affinis. Polychaeres were assigned to 12 feeding guilds and BMX (burrowing, motile, muscular pharynx) was the most dominant feeding guild (26%). Muddy sediments sustained more polychaete worms which showed burrowing (65%), motile (72%), and non-tentaculate strategies (92%), while sandy sediments contained more filter feeders (32%) and sessile (63%), and more tentaculate worms (49%). The sediment grain size was suggested to be the prime factor selecting the polychaete feeding guild.

  • Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) plays a dominant role in absorbing UV-VIS light and is also important in the biogeochemical carbon cycle due to the production of carbon dioxide from photo-oxidation at the sea surface in marine environments. Since absorption by CDOM was recently found to be responsible for increasing the energy absorbed in the mixed layer by 40 % over pure seawater, the importance of CDOM absorption in seawater for increasing sea surface temperature has come to be well recognized. We measured aCDOM and the absorption characteristics of CDOM during spring 2012 and 2014 in the southwestern East Sea. Distribution of CDOM in spring 2012 and 2014 was compared and S value was used to find the source of CDOM in the study area. As a result, the average $a_{CDOM}$ was $0.237m^{-1}$ ($0.009{\sim}0.988m^{-1}$) and the average S value was $16{\mu}m^{-1}$,which shows coastal properties. Also a positive correlation between Chl a and CDOM was observed ($r^2=0.34$), with an especially strong correlation near coastal stations. aCDOM in 2014 was about 40 % higher than aCDOM in 2012 during spring in the study area. This difference in aCDOM concentration resulted not only from annual variation but also from stratification and photobleaching in late spring 2012. This observation implies the possibility of flux of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as a result of photo-oxidation in the East Sea.

  • Salinity is not only an important variable that determines the density of the ocean but also one of the main parameters representing the global water cycle. Ocean salinity observations have been mainly conducted using ships, Argo floats, and buoys. Since the first satellite salinity was launched in 2009, it is also possible to observe sea surface salinity in the global ocean using satellite salinity data. However, the satellite salinity data contain various errors, it is necessary to validate its accuracy before applying it as research data. In this study, the salinity accuracy between the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite salinity data and the in-situ salinity data provided by the Ieodo ocean research station was evaluated, and the error characteristics were analyzed from April 2015 to August 2020. As a result, a total of 314 match-up points were produced, and the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean bias of salinity were 1.79 and 0.91 psu, respectively. Overall, the satellite salinity was overestimated compare to the in-situ salinity. Satellite salinity is dependent on various marine environmental factors such as season, sea surface temperature (SST), and wind speed. In summer, the difference between the satellite salinity and the in-situ salinity was less than 0.18 psu. This means that the accuracy of satellite salinity increases at high SST rather than at low SST. This accuracy was affected by the sensitivity of the sensor. Likewise, the error was reduced at wind speeds greater than 5 m s-1. This study suggests that satellite-derived salinity data should be used in coastal areas for limited use by checking if they are suitable for specific research purposes.

  • In the southern sea of Korea and the areas of Tsushima warm currents the relationship between the distributions of eggs and larvae of anchovy (Engraulis japonica) and oceanic conditions was examined on July and August 1997, The south Korean coastal waters, the water temperature of below $20\~23^{\circ}$ and the salinity of above 33.0 (PSU), the mixed waters between the south Korean coastal waters and the Tsushima warm currents, $21\~25^{\circ}$ and $32.0\~32.5$ and the Tsushima warm currents, above $26^{\circ}$ and below 31.5 were distributed at the surface layer. The Tsushima warm currents were distributed at the northeast of Jeju Is. and off the southern sea of Korea. As an appearance of warm streamer, the mixed waters were intruded into the coastal areas of Komun Is.$\~$Sori Is. and Sori Is.$\~$Yokji Is.. Approximate paths of surface water by the drift card experiments were similar with the intrusions of the warm water identified from the water temperature and salinity distributions. The distributions of chlorophyll concentration were consistent with the distributions of water temperature and salinity, Anchovy eggs and larvae were mostly distributed at Komun Is., Yokji Is, and the southwest of Koie Is. where chlorophyll concentrations were high and cyclonic circulations by the warm water intrusions (warm streamers) were formed.

  • This study investigated the cause of the heavy snowfall that occurred in the East Coast of Korea from 6 February to 14 February 2014. The synoptic conditions were analyzed using blocking index, equivalent potential temperature, potential vorticity, maritime temperature difference, temperature advection, and ground convergence. During the case period, a large blocking pattern developed over the Western Pacific causing the flow to be stagnant, and there was a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Korean Peninsula because of this arrangement. The case period was divided into three parts based on the synoptic forcing that was responsible for the heavy snowfall; detailed analyses were conducted for the first and last period. In the first period, a heavy snowfall occurred over the entire Korean Peninsula due to strong updrafts from baroclinic instability and a low pressure caused by potential vorticity located at the mid-troposphere. In the lower atmosphere, a North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system over the Eastern Korea intensified the easterly airflow and created a convergence zone near the ground which strengthened the upslope effect of the Taebaek Mountain range with a cumulative fresh snowfall amount of 41 cm in the East Coast region. In the last period, the cold air nestled in the Maritime Province of Siberia and Manchuria strengthened much more than that in the first half and extended to the East Sea. The temperature difference between the 850 hPa air and the SST was large and convective clouds developed over the sea. The highest cumulative fresh snow amount of 39.7 cm was recorded in the coastal area during this period. During the entire period, vertically oriented equivalent potential temperature showed neutral stability layer that helped the cloud formation and development in the East Coast. The 2014 heavy snowfall case over the East Coast provinces of Korea were due to: 1) stagnation of the system by blocking pattern, 2) the dynamic effect of mid-level potential vorticity of 1.6 PVU, 3) the easterly air flow from North-South oriented High-to-Low pressure system, 4) the existence of vertically oriented neutral stable layer, and 5) the expansion of strong cold air into the East Sea which created a large temperature difference between the air and the ocean.
