Experimental and computational studies were performed to investigate the effectiveness of a thrust vectoring method using a counterflow concept. A shadowgraph method was used to visualize the supersonic jet expanded from a two-dimensional convergent-divergent nozzle and deflected by a now suction. The primary nozzle pressure and suction nozzle pressure ratios are varied between 3.0 and 5.0, and between 0.2 and 1.0 respectively. The present experimental and computational results showed that, for a given primary nozzle pressure ratio, a decrease in the suction nozzle pressure ratio produced an increased thrust vector angle, and during the change processes of the suction pressure, a hysteresis effect of the thrust vectoring was found through the wall pressure distributions.

Recently, a vessel's maneuvering performance is considered to be an important subject to secure safety at short sea shipping. Especially the high turning performance, which is required to avoid the marine pollution by the ships that was grounded, becomes more severe. In this paper, we discuss the effect of increasing rudder force on turning performance of short sea shipping ship by free running test in towing tank. First of all, we make the 47K PC model ship and high-lift rudder using Coanda effect. And we make the free running test system for the turning test in towing tank. And also we perform the turing test of 47K PC model in several changes of Coanda jet momentum and evaluate the turing performance such as advance and tactical diameter. Finally, we confirm that the increasing of rudder force is very effective to improvement of turning performance of short sea shipping ship.
In general the swirl jet is generated by the injected flow that is forced to the tangential direction. A spiral nozzle which is composed of an annular slit and a convergent nozzle, is released the spiral jet that is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit. The objective of the present study is to investigate the additional study that is studied a changed the convergent nozzle angle and nozzle length. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The convergent nozzle angle and the nozzle length of the spiral nozzle are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained show that the convergent nozzle angle and the nozzle length of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as a tangential and a jet width.

Horizontal air-jet effect has been utilized in some air conditioning systems in order to control the contaminated air indoor. In the present study, the flow and heat transfer of the contaminated air from a range hood system has been investigated with or without horizontal air-jet effect when the hood fan is on or off. For the present numerical experiment, PAT Flow code has been used. From the present numerical simulations, it has been shown that the air jet of a range hood generates coanda effect confining the contaminated air in a certain region. Furthermore, the qualitative relation between the flow rate of the capture air jet and the distribution pattern of the contamination has been discussed.

An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system with inclined jet. Jets with inclined angle of 60 are applied to impingement/effusion cooling. At the jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the experiments were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.0 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result indicates that the inclined jet causes the non-uniform and low heat/mass transfer compared to the vertical jet. At stagnation region, the peak position is shifted from the geometrical center of injection hole due to Coanda effect and its level is higher than that of vertical jet due to increase in turbulence intensity by steep velocity gradient near the stagnation region. Further, the secondary peak region disappears because the interaction between adjacent wall jets weakens. When the initial crossflow occurs, the distorted heat/mass transfer pattern appears. As the blowing ratio (crossflow rate) increases, the heat/mass transfer distributions become similar to those of the vertical jet. This is because the effect of crossflow is dominant compared to that of inclined jet under high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$. At low blowing ratio $(M{\leq}0.5)$, averaged Sh value is 10% lower than that of vertical jet, whereas its value at high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$ is similar to that of vertical jet.

Axisymmetric shear layers around a free jet is forced by co-flowing and counter-flowing secondary jets from/to an annular tube around the jet nozzle. The jet potential core extends far downstream with co-flowing secondary jets due to inhibited vortex developing and pairing. For counter-flowing cases, the axisymmetric shear layer around the jet transits from convective instability to absolute instability for velocity ratios R=1.3~l.65 for the uniform velocity jets. Consequently, the jet potential core length increases and the turbulence level in the jet core is reduced significantly. The jets are controlled better with extension collars attached to the outer nozzle exit because the annular secondary flow is guided well by the extension collars. For the vectoring of jet, the annular tube around the jet is divided in two parts and the only one part is used for suction. The half suction makes the different shear layer around the jet and vectoring the jet by Coanda effect. The vectoring and turbulent components are varied significantly by the suction ratio. The experiments are carried out to investigate the characteristics of forced free jets using flow visualization, velocity and turbulence measurements.

An experimental study is performed to observe the characteristics of the thrust vectoring control (TVC) of the supersonic jet using proportional control valves. It is observed that three different TVC characteristics exist as the nozzle pressure ratio varies. Strong hysteresis phenomena are also observed during the valve control for a certain range of the nozzle pressure ratio. It is also noticed that the secondary chamber pressure is one of the influencing parameters for the TVC. Therefore, a control algorithm utilizing the secondary chamber pressure coefficient as a predictor is applied to achieve the stable TVC avoiding the hysteresis. Consequently, the stable TVC with the maximum deflection angle of about 20-degree has been realized using the proportional control valves.

High lifting devices used for control purposes have received much attention in the marine field. Hydrofoils for supporting the hull, roll stabilizer fins for developing the motion damping performance, rudders for maneuverability are the well-known devices. In the present study, the ability of the rudder with flap to produce high lift was analyzed. The boundary layer control, one of the flow control techniques, was adopted. Especially, to build the blown flap, a typical and representative type of a boundary layer control, a flapped rudder was designed and manufactured so that it could eject the water jet from the gap between the main foil and the flap to the flap surface tangentially. And it was tested in the towing tank. Simultaneously, to know the information about the 2-dimensional flow field, a fin model with similar characteristics as the rudder model applicable for the motion control was made and tested in the cavitation tunnel. In addition, local flow measurements were carried out to obtain physical information, for example, a surface pressure measurement and flow visualization around the flap. And CFD simulation was used to obtain information difficult to collect from the experiment about the 2-dimensional flow.

Recently, fluidic thrust vectoring methods have been preferably employed to control the movement of propulsive systems due to relatively simpler design and lower cost than mechanical thrust vectoring methods. For An application of the thrust vectoring to flight bodies, it is necessary to understand very complicated exhaust flows which are often subject to shock waves and boundary layer separation. But researches for the thrust vector control using counterflow have been few. In the present study, experiments have been performed to investigate the characteristics of supersonic jets controlled by a thrust vectoring method using counterflow. The primary jet is expanded through a two-dimensional primary nozzle shrouded by collars, and is deflected by the suction of the air near nozzle into an upper slot placed between the primary nozzle and the upper collar. A shadowgraph method is used to visualize the supersonic jet flowfields. Primary nozzle pressure ratios and suction nozzle pressure ratios are varied from 3.0 to 5.0, and from 0.2 to 1.0 respectively. The present experimental results showed that, for a given primary nozzle pressure ratio, a decrease in the suction nozzle pressure ratio produced an increased thrust vector angle. As the suction nozzle pressure ratios were increased and decreased, the hysteresis of the thrust vectoring was observed through the wall pressure distributions
