There are many researches in progress on co-firing of coal and biomass to reduce carbon dioxide produced from the coal consumption. This study carried out 200 Kg/h combustion test furnace by mixing coal with timber. Coal was mixed with domestic and imported-wood around 10% to 20% based on input energy. For the mixed fuel, combustion temperature, unburned carbon and the composition of flue gas were analyzed. In addition, the tendency of slagging and fouling was examined using a probe. According to the result of the experiment, combustion temperature was depended on the kind of wood and mixing ratio. The unburned carbon loss was higher with increase of wood biomass mixing ratio, as a result, the total heat loss of furnace was slightly increased. The emission of NOx and SOx were decreased by $3{\sim}20%$ and $21{\sim}60%$ respectively. There are no difference of slagging and fouling tendency between biomass co-firing and coal burning only.
In this study, a laser sheet technique and PLIF (Planar laser-induced fluorescence) are applied to a laboratory-scale pulverized coal burner of the open type, and the spatial relationship of the pulverized coal particle zone and the combustion reaction zone is examined by simultaneous measurement of Mie scattering and OH-LIF images. It is found that this technique can be used to investigate the spatial relationship of the combustion reaction zone and pulverized-coal particles in turbulent pulverized-coal flames without disturbing the combustion reaction field. In the upstream region, the combustion reaction occurs only in the periphery of the clusters where high-temperature burned gas of the methane pilot flame is entrained and oxygen supply is sufficient. In the downstream region, however, combustion reaction can be seen also within clusters of pulverized-coal particles, since the temperature of pulverized-coal particles rises, and the mixing with emitted volatile matter and ambient air is promoted.

This study investigated mercury emission at various combustion conditions and analyzed mercury species in flue gas from coal combustion at a laboratory scale furnace in coal. The results of this study can be used to predict and to assess mercury emission at coal boilers and power plants. The coal used in the plants generally contains about $0.02{\sim}0.28\;mg$ of mercury per kg. Bituminous and anthracite coal used for the experiment contained 0.049 and 0.297 mg/kg of mercury, respectively. Mercury emissions during coal combustion at temperatures range of $600^{\circ}C$ to $1,400^{\circ}C$ was measured and analysed using Ontario Hydro method; the speciation changes were also observed in mercury emissions. The results showed higher fraction of elemental mercury than that of oxidised mercury at most temperatures tested in this experiment. The fraction of elemental mercury was lower in combustion of anthracite coal than in bituminous combustion. As expected, equilibrium calculations and real power plants data showed good similarity. The distribution of particle size in flue gas had the higher peak in size above $2.5\;{\mu}m$. However the peak of mercury enrichment in dust was at $0.3\;{\mu}m$, which could be easily emitted into atmosphere without filtration in combustion system. When the CEA(Chemical equilibrium and Application) code was used for combustion equilibrium calculation, Cl was found to be the important component effecting mercury oxidation, especially at the lower temperatures under $900^{\circ}C$.

In this study, we investigated the effects of the temperature on the coal/biomass $char-CO_2$ gasification reaction under isothermal conditions of $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ using the lignite(Indonesia Eco coal) with biomass (korea cypress). Ni catalysts were impregnated on the coal by the ion-exchange method. Four kinetic models which are shrinking core model (SCM), volumetric reaction model (VRM), random pore model (RPM) and modified volumetric reaction model (MVRM) for gas-solid reaction were applied to the experimental data against the measured kinetic data. The Activation energy of Ni-coal/biomass, non-catalyst coal/biomass $Char-CO_2$ gasification was calculated from the Arrhenius equation.

The coal considerably is the energy resource which is important with the new remarking energy resource. The coal conversion has two processes which are coal devolatilization and char oxidation. Coal devolatilization is important because it describes up to 70% weight loss and has been shown that nitrogen contribute 60 to 80% of the total NOx produced. The chemical percolation devolatilization(CPD) model is used here to describe coal devolatilization. The model was developed to describe coal devolatilization behavior of rapidly heated coal based on characteristics of the chemical structure of the parent coal. This paper describes CPD model in detail and makes an analysis of Shenhua coal(bituminous) which is used calculated 13-C NMR(carbon-nuclear magnetic resonance).
Flame structure of co-firing coal and palm kernel shell (PKS) was investigated in a pulverized coal swirl burner by particle image velocimetry (PIV). The pulverized coal swirl flame is operated with a PKS blending ratio of 10%, 20%, and 30%. For all operating conditions, flame structures such as internal recirculation zone (IRZ), outer recirculation zone (ORZ), and exhaust tube vortex (ETV) were observed. In the center of flame, the strong velocity gradient is occurred at the stagnation point where the volatile gas combustion actively takes place and the acceleration is increased with higher PKS blending ratio. OH radical shows the burned gas region at the stagnation point and shear layer between IRZ and ORZ. In addition, OH radical intensity increases for a co-firing condition because of high volatile matter from PKS. Because the volatile gas combustion takes place at lower temperature, co-firing condition (more than 20%) leads to oxygen deficiency and reduces the combustibility of coal particle near the burner. Therefore, increasing PKS blending ratio leads to higher OH radical intensity and lower temperature.
Background: Spontaneous combustion of coal is one of the factors which causes direct or indirect gas and dust explosion, mine fire, the release of toxic gases, loss of reserve, and loss of miners' life. To avoid these incidents, the prediction of spontaneous combustion is essential. The safety of miner's in the mining field can be assured if the prediction of a coal fire is carried out at an early stage. Method: Adularya Underground Coal Mine which is fully mechanized with longwall mining method was selected as a case study area. The data collected for 2017, by sensors from ten gas monitoring stations were used for the simulation and prediction of a coal fire. In this study, the fuzzy logic model is used because of the uncertainties, nonlinearity, and imprecise variables in the data. For coal fire prediction, CO, O2, N2, and temperature were used as input variables whereas fire intensity was considered as the output variable. The simulation of the model is carried out using the Mamdani inference system and run by the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox in MATLAB. Results: The results showed that the fuzzy logic system is more reliable in predicting fire intensity with respect to uncertainties and nonlinearities of the data. It also indicates that the 1409 and 610/2B gas station points have a greater chance of causing spontaneous combustion and therefore require a precautional measure. Conclusion: The fuzzy logic model shows higher probability in predicting fire intensity with the simultaneous application of many variables compared with Graham's index.
Recently, gasification technology for coal blended with biomass has been an issue. Especially, An advantages of coal blended with biomass are 1) obtaining high cold gas efficiency, 2) obtaining syn-gas of high-high heating value (HHV), and 3) controlling occurrence of $CO_2$. In this study, the efficiency and characteristic of 300 MW Shell type gasifier were predicted using CFD simulation. The CFD simulation was performed for biomass coal blending ratios of 0~0.2, 0.5, 1 and $O_2$/fuel ratios of 0.5~0.84. Kinetic parameters (A, $E_a$) obtained by $CO_2$ gasification experiment were used as inputs for the simulation. In results of CFD simulation, residence times of particle in 300MW Shell type gasifer presented as 7.39 sec ~ 13.65 sec. Temperature of exit increased with $O_2$/fuel ratio as 1400 K ~ 2800 K, while there is not an effects of biomass coal blending ratios. Considering both aspects of temperature for causing wall slagging and high cold gas efficiency, the optimal $O_2$/fuel ratio and blending ratio were found to be 0.585 and 0.05, respectively.
In this study, co-combustion characteristics of Chinese bituminous coal and North Korean anthracite were investigated using a 2 MWe scale circulating fluidized bed power plant. At first, the combustion efficiency of bituminous coal of China and Australia as a function of excess air ratio and temperature were observed. The results showed that the combustion efficiency was influenced by particle size and volatile content of coal, the combustion efficiency of Chinese bituminous coal was over 99.5%. The unburned carbon particles from fly ash and bottom ash were a content 5~7% and 0.3%, respectively. The combustion efficiency with the mixture ratio 20% of bituminous coal and anthracite decreased over 5% because of the increase of entrained particles by a small average particle size of anthracite in the combustor. However, the outlet concentration of $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ was not changed remarkably. The concentrations of the typical air pollutants such as $NO_x$ and $SO_2$ were 200~250 ppm($O_2$ 6%), 100~320 ppm($O_2$ 6%) respectively. The outlet concentration of $NO_x$ was decreased to 30~65% with $NH_3$ supplying rate of 2~13 l/min in SCR process. The $SO_x$ removal efficiency was up to 70% by in-furnace desulfurization using limestone with Ca/S molar of approximately 6.5. With wet scrubbing using $Mg(OH)_2$ as absorbent, the $SO_x$ removal efficiency reached 100% under near pH 5.0 of scrubbing liquid.
Background: During hot environment work tasks with whole-body enclosed anti-bioaerosol suit, the combined effect of heavy sweating and exhaled hot humid air may cause the N95 medical respirator to saturate with water/sweat (i.e., water-blocking). Methods: 32 young male subjects with different body mass indexes (BMI) in whole-body protection (N95 medical respirator + one-piece protective suit + head covering + protective face screen + gloves + shoe covers) were asked to simulate waste collecting from each isolated room in a seven-story building at 27-28℃, and the weight, inhalation resistance (Rf), and aerosol penetration of the respirator before worn and after water-blocking were analyzed. Results: All subjects reported water-blocking asphyxia of the N95 respirators within 36-67 min of the task. When water-blocking occurred, the Rf and 10-200 nm total aerosol penetration (Pt) of the respirators reached up to 1270-1810 Pa and 17.3-23.3%, respectively, which were 10 and 8 times of that before wearing. The most penetration particle size of the respirators increased from 49-65 nm before worn to 115-154 nm under water-blocking condition, and the corresponding maximum size-dependent aerosol penetration increased from 2.5-3.5% to 20-27%. With the increase of BMI, the water-blocking occurrence time firstly increased then reduced, while the Rf, Pt, and absorbed water all increased significantly. Conclusions: This study reveals respirator water-blocking and its serious negative impacts on respiratory protection. When performing moderate-to-high-load tasks with whole-body protection in a hot environment, it is recommended that respirator be replaced with a new one at least every hour to avoid water-blocking asphyxia.
