Urbanization rates of population range from about 1% in the developed countries to about 4% in developing countries. For a global population that may reach 10 billion within the next 40 years, pressure has arisen for an increase in the large-scale use of wastes and byproducts in construction. Ironically, most of the wastes that need to be recycled are generated in large cities where the need for constructed facilities to serve large population is high. Waste and recycled materials (WRM) that are used in construction are required to satisfy material strength, durability and contaminant teachability requirements. These materials exhibit a wide variety of characteristics owing to the diversity of industrial processes through which they are produced. Several laboratory-based investigations have been conducted to assess the pollution potential and load bearing capacity of materials such as petroleum-contaminated soils, coal combustion ash, flue-gas desulphurization gypsum and foundry sand. For full-scale systems, although environmental pollution potential and structural integrity of constructed facilities that incorporate WRM are interrelated, comprehensive schemes have not been developed for integrated assessment of the relevant field-scale performance factors. In this presentation, a framework for such an assessment is proposed and presented in the form of a flowchart. The proposed scheme enables economic, environmental, worker safety and engineering factors to be addressed in a number of sequential steps. Quantitative methods and test protocols that have been developed can be incorporated into the proposed scheme for assessing the feasibility of using WRM as partial or full substitutes for earthen highway materials in the field.
The average sulfur content of crude oil is 2.2%. Coal is about 0.3 to 4.0 percent of the sulfur gases or particles being discharged into the atmosphere through the chimney as 1 to 2% $SO_3$(Sulfur trioxide) and about 95% of the $SO_2$ is reported. $SO_3$ gas, which has many different causes of, as the combustion of sulfur containing fuel during the air due to the excess $SO_2$ gas is oxidized to $SO_3$ gas. Sulfur trioxide emitted from high sulfur heavy oil fired boiler caused white plume in stack and high temperature and cold end corrosion of facilities. So, in order to control sulfur trioxide concentration of Fuel gas in boiler, various of additives are used in other foreign. They are injected to Fuel Oil and consumed in boiler and reduce ash and the conversion rate of sulfur trioxide. In domestic, MgO compounds are used as additives but the total volume of them are made from other foreign company. In this study, MgO compounds were developed with liquid MgO compounds and field application was accomplished. The effect of newly developed chemicals and process were nearly equal to foreign products. In Consequent, the chemicals and process produced by newly developed technology can be substituted for foreign products and reduce the cost of plant operation.
To clarify influences of silicious raw materials on mineralogcal and petrological properties in clinkering process clay, shale, quartzite, sand and coal ash have been used as silicious raw materials. The tests on thermal properties, reactivity and burnability of raw mixtures which have different silicious raw materials respectively have been made by means of X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Limestone contains coarse crystalline grains which show 0.1-1.0mm and its decarbonation temperature is 86$0^{\circ}C$. Reaction temperatures among raw mixtures have been determined by X-ray diffractometry and their results are as follows; clay minerals under 1, 00$0^{\circ}C$, mica group, 100$0^{\circ}C$-110$0^{\circ}C$, feldspar group, 1, 10$0^{\circ}C$-1, 20$0^{\circ}C$ and quartz 1, 20$0^{\circ}C$-1, 30$0^{\circ}C$. Burnabilities of raw mixtures of different temperatures have been found that they mainly depend upon their mineral contents in silicious raw materials and their order is as follows; $clay\geq shale\gg quartzite \geq sand$.
Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.
Three properties of food waste are water 80%, ash 3%, volatile matter 17%. When food waste goes through treatment process such as removal of foreign substances, removal of water as well as sodium, dryness, and pulverization, it transforms into 4,000 Kcal/kg purverized fuel if moisture content is below 13%. Fuel ratio (fixed carbon/volatile matter) of purverized fuel is low compared with bituminuous coal. Ignition temperature measured by thermogravimetry analyzer is about $460^{\circ}C$. Combustion test of purverized fuel have been performed using energy recovery facility which include storage tank of dewatered cake, dryer, hammer mill, combuster including burner, boiler, flue gas treatment equipment. When 160-180 kg/hr of fuel is steadily supplied to burner for 3 hours, combustor temperature reaches about $1000^{\circ}C$ and CO is 77-103 ppm at 1.55 excess air ratio and SOx and Cl are under 2 ppm and 1ppm, respectively. This experiment demonstrate that purverized fuel made from food waste could be an alternative clean energy at the age of high oil price.

The International Energy Agency(IEA) recommends that intergovernmental agreements reduce CO2 emissions by 2050 to about 50% in 2005 in its report. To realize these demands, it is suggested to actively utilize energy efficiency improvement technology, renewable energy, nuclear power, carbon dioxide capture & storage technology (CCS). In the field of building materials and cement, mineral carbonization technology is widely used. Inorganic by-products applicable to greenhouse gas storage include waste concrete, slag, coal ash, and gypsum. If the Mineral Carbonation Act is used, it is expected that about 12 million tons of greenhouse gases can be immobilized every year. Greenhouse gas immobilization using cement hydrate can be immobilized by injecting carbon dioxide into the hydrated products C-S-H, and Ca(OH)2. In the case of immobilization through concrete carbonization, a carbon dioxide promotion test is used, which is often different from the actual carbon dioxide carbonization reaction. If the external carbon dioxide concentration is abnormally higher than the reality, it is thought that it will be different from the actual reaction. In this study, the carbonation phenomenon according to the concentration and identification of the carbon dioxide reaction mechanism of cement hydrate was to be considered.
This study has resulted in the following findings. First, Using more than 30% of GBFS to replace FA enabled bleeding control through improved fluidity. Moreover, it has been confirmed that effective strength and proper quality can be achieved when it was applied as a backfilling material with higher early strength than the base material. Second, When using more than 30% of FNS to replace sand, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Third, When using more than 30% of both GBFS and FNS in combination, it was found that adding 0.3~0.35 of the AE agent is effective for bleeding control through improved fluidity. Also, it was confirmed that proper mixing of 15~60% of GF secured the effective strength and desired quality as a refiller and joint filler material.
