The study of flocculation kinetics is of fundamental interest in the field of water treatment, because rational study of the factors affecting the coagulation process should be based on the rate of particle growth. The effect of sulfate on flocculation kinetics were examined using ferric nitrate as a coagulant to coagulate kaolin clay in water under several experimental conditions. Both the particle size distribution data obtained from the AIA and the on-line measurement of turbidity fluctuation by the PDA were used to measure flocculation kinetics. Results show that sulfate ion added to the kaolin suspension played an important role in the flocculation process, not only improving flocculation kinetics at more acidic pH levels but also changing surface charge of particles. The kinetics of flocculation were improved mainly by the enhanced rate and extent of Fe(III) precipitation attributed to the addition of sulfate, and thereby, better interparticle collision frequency, but little by the charge reductions resulting from the sulfate addition. The increase in sulfate concentration beyond $3\times10^{-4}M (up to 2\times10^{-3}M)$ did not induce further improvement in flocculation kinetics, although the higher concentrations of sulfate ion substantially increased the negative ZP value of particles. Key Words : Flocculation Kinetics, Fe(III) Coagulant, Sulfate ion, Turbidity Fluctuation.

The influences of fluorescence, scattering, and flocculation in turbid material by light scattering of L-aspartic acid, preservative and emulsifier were interpreted for the scattered fluorescence intensity and wavelength. They have been studied the molecular properties by the spectroscopy of laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and flocculation. The effects of optical properties in scattering media have been found by the optical parameters(${\mu}_s$, ${\mu}_a$, ${\mu}_t$). Flocculation is an important step in many solid-liquid separation processes and is widely used. When two particles approach each other, interactions of several colloid particles can come into play which may have major effect on the flocculation and LIF process. The values of scattering coefficient ${\mu}_s$ are large by means of the increasing scattering of scatterer, The values have been found that the slope decays exponentially as a function of concentration from laser source to detector by our experimental result. It may also aid in designing the best model for oil chemistry, bio-pharmaceutical products, laser medicine and application of medical engineering on LIF and coagulation in particle transport mode.
The mean velocity gradient, G, has been used as a principal design and operation parameter for flocculation unit. This paper questions that significance. The physical and qualitative meaning of collision efficiency factors of each transport mechanism (Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation) are reviewed. The overall collision frequency function is calculated by summing up the collision frequency function of each mechanism. In the collision of two particles of different size, a diagram showing the dominant region in which each mechanism is important is developed and the meaning of the diagram is discussed. The primary ramification of this curvilinear, heterodisperse approach is that G is found to be not nearly so important. Previous experimental work in which the role of G has been examined is reviewed in light of this finding.

In this outline, the stability of solid/liquid dispersion was theoretically investigated the matter from all angles by using the modified DLVO theory. The stability was handled various considerations such as a production and characteristics of electrical double layer, total interaction$(V_T)$ that consisting of attractive force$(V_A)$ and repulsion$(V_R)$. coagulation, the stability ratio(W), critical flocculation concentration (cfc) and zeta potential$(\zeta)$ etc. It was possible for us to examine with the stability ratio(W), critical flocculation concentration (cfc) and zeta potential$(\zeta)$ that may estimation of stability of solid/liquid dispersion experimentally.
This study determined the optimum dosage for coagulation reactions of red tide organisms (RTO) using a combination of ignited oyster shell powder (10sp) and loess and examined the electrokinetic and rheological characteristics of their flocs. Two kinds of RTO, Cylindrotheca closterium and Skeletonema costatum, were sampled in Masan Bay and cultured in the laboratory. Coagulation experiments were conducted using various concentrations of IOSP, loess, IOSP+1oess, RTO, and a jar tester RTO cell numbers were counted for both the supernatant and RTO culture solution. The removal rates increased rapidly with increasing IOSP concentrations up to 50 mg/L and loess concentrations up to 800 mg/L. A removal rate of $100\%$ was reached at 400 mg/L of IOSP and 6,400 mg/L of loess. The highest increment $(16.7\%)$ of the rates of coagulation reaction occurred using both IOSP and loess (50+200 mg/L) in comparison with IOSP alone. The rate of coagulation reaction using both IOSP and loess (50+200 mg/L), $90.6\%,$ was similar to employing either IOSP of 150 mg/L or loess of 3,200 mg/L. All of the coagulation liquids for RTO, IOSP (200 mg/L), loess (200 ma/L), and IOSP+1oess (200+200 mg/L) revealed non-Newtonian fluid properties and therefore their shear rate vs. shear stress curves were non-linear. The coagulation liquids revealed elastic body properties at a lower shear rate increasing in the following order: RTO, IOSP (200 mg/L), loess (200 mg/L), and IOSP+1oess (200+200 mg/L. IOSP+1oess (200+200 mg/L) especially demonstrated plastic flow properties at a lower shear rate.
Total suspendid solid (TSS) of non point source pollutants in construction site are in higher concentration than others (BOD, COD etc). Also, the TSS concentration is very sensitive to the rainfall intensity in early stage of construction. There are two methods for treatment of non point source pollutants, which are temporary treatment facility and filtering one. But they have disadvantages. Temporary facility system has very low efficiency and filtering system consumes high energy and takes up large footprint. This study shows how prefabricated flocculation/coagulation system is developped to cover the above weakness and evaluation of the system performance in construction site. The prefabricated flocculation/coagulation system has very high treatment efficiency comparing with temporary and filtering system and takes small footprint. Therefore, it expects that the system leads to prevention of pollution near construction site and reduction of public grievance. Proper coagulant dosage and sludge circulation facility application, controlling the height of sludge interfacial are necessary to maximize the system efficiency.
The kinetics of flocculation of heterodisperse suspension like those in water treatment plants and natural water system are usually described by the Smoluchowski equation, which incorporates collision frequency functions for particle collisions by Brownian motion, fluid shear, and differential sedimentation. These collisionfrequeney functions have been based on a rectilinear view of collisions, i.e., one that ignores short-range forces and changes in fluid motion as particles approach one another. In this research, a curvilinear approach, i.e., one that accounts for hydrodynamic forces and particle interaction in the collision of two different size particles is developed. Collision efficiency factors of each mechanism can be calculated by trajectory analysis (fluid shear and differential sedimentation) or the solution of diffusion equation (Brownian motion). The results are presented as a set of corrections to the rectilinear collision frequency functions for each mechanism.

In this study, a method for stabilizing treated water was conducted while maintaining high flux using a metal flat membrane module made of stainless steel. This module had a pore size of 13 ㎛, so it was possible to operate at a high flux from 60 LMH to 100 LMH. However, although SS leaked about 30~50 ppm during initial operation, aggregation was possible because SS acted as aggregation nucleus. While polymer membrane permeate does not have aggregation nucleus, so coagulation is possible but not flocculation. Typically clay or bentonite, which is used as aggregation nucleus, is additionally administered. In this study, the total phosphorus treatment and the quality of the treated water were to promote stability because flocculation was achieved only with SS leakage without the need for such a aggregation nucleus. Finally, the feasibility of operating a metal membrane filter capable of high flux in stable treated water to be applied to the MBR system.

Studies on the flocculation of algae using various metal ions were carried out by measurements of optical density(OD) and zeta potential. Cyanobacteria were used as algaes. Flocculation efficiencies of cyanobacteria by an addition of metal ions were determined from OD values, and the effect of metal ions was greater in the order of $Al^{3+}$>$La^{3+}$>$Ho^{3+}$>$Fe^{2+}$>$Ca^{2+}$. Especially for trivalent metal ions, percentages of metal removed from cyanobacteria solutions on flocculation were measured, showing the same order as in flocculation efficiencies. Zeta potentials of cyanobacteria alone were measured with increasing the concentration, found to be all negative voltages, and were increased with increasing the concentration. The effect of pH on zeta potential of cyanobacteria solution was investigated. Below pH 5.5, the zeta potentials were steeply decreased with increasing pH, whereas in the range of $5.5{\leq}pH{\leq}10$ they were almost constant ($-46{\pm}1mV$) even with increasing pH. At a constant concentration of cyanobacteria ($A_{730}=0.25$), an increase in concentration of metal ions caused an increase in zeta potential of cyanobacteria solution, showing that the effect was greater in the order of $Al^{3+}$>$Ho^{3+}$>$La^{3+}{\gg}Mg^{2+}{\geq}Ca^{2+}{\gg}K^+$. At a constant metal concentration, zeta potentials were measured with increasing cyanobacteria concentration, showing that zeta potentials for $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ions were negligibly changed, whereas those of $Ho^{3+}$ and $La^{3+}$ ions were decreased. Moreover, the effect of $Ho^{3+}$ ion on decreasing zeta potential was smaller than that of $La^{3+}$ ion. $Al^{3+}$ ions showed quite a different behavior that with increasing cyanobacteria concentration the zeta potentials increased and decreased thereafter. Hydrolysis of $Al^{3+}$ ions caused a difficulty to investigate coagulation or flocculation of cyanobacteria by measurement of zeta potential.
