The MarM247 based superalloy (8wt.%Cr- 9wt.%Co- 3wt.%Ta- 1.5wt.%Hf- 5.6%wt.Al- 9.5wt.%W- Bal. Ni) specimens were diffusion aluminized by for types of pack cementation methods, and their coating structure and their high temperature oxidation resistance were investigated. The coated specimens treated at 973K in high aluminum concentration pack had a coating layer containing large hafunium rich precipitates, which were originally included in substrate alloy. After the high temperature oxidation test in air containing 30 vol.% $H_2O$ at 1273K ~ 323K, the deep localized corrosion which reached to the substrate were observed along with these hafnium rich precipitates. On the other hand, the coated specimens treated at 1323K using low aluminum concentration pack showed the coating layer without the large hafunium rich precipitates, and after the high temperature oxidation test at 1273K for 1800 ksec, it did not show the deep localized corrosion. The nickel electroplating before the aluminizing forms thick hafnium free area, and its high temperature oxidation resistance were comparable to platinum modified aluminizing coatings at 1273K.
Microstructural characteristics of directionally solidified René 80 superalloy are investigated with optical microscope and scanning electron microscope; solidification velocity is found to change from 25 to 200 μm/s under the condition of constant thermal gradient (G) and constant alloy composition (Co). Based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement, γ phase (1,322 ℃), MC carbide (1,278 ℃), γ/γ' eutectic phase (1,202 ℃), and γ' precipitate (1,136 ℃) are formed sequentially during cooling process. The size of the MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phases gradually decrease with increasing solidification velocity, whereas the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are nearly constant as a function of solidification velocity. It is estimated that the area fractions of MC carbide and γ/γ' eutectic phase are determined not by the solidification velocity but by the alloy composition. Microstructural characteristics of René 80 superalloy after solid solution heat-treatment and primary aging heat-treatment are such that the size and the area fraction of γ' precipitate are nearly constant with solidification velocity and the area fraction of γ/γ' eutectic phase decreases from 1.7 % to 0.955 %, which is also constant regardless of the solidification velocity. However, the size of carbide solely decreases with increasing solidification velocity, which influences the tensile properties at room temperature.
The Co-base super heat resisting alloy ECY768 is employed in gas turbine because of its high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The prediction of fatigue life for superalloy is important for improving the efficiency. In this paper, low cycle fatigue tests are performed as variables of total strain range and temperature. The relations between strain energy density and number of cycle to failure are examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of ECY768 super alloy. The lives predicted by strain energy methods are found to coincide with experimental data and results obtained from the Coffin-Manson method. The fatigue lives is evaluated using predicted by Coffin-Manson method and strain energy methods is compared with the measured fatigue lives at different temperatures. The microstructure observing was performed for how affect able to low-cycle fatigue life by increasing the temperature.
This study investigates the effect of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of a forged Ni-based superalloy called Nimonic 80A. Nimonic 80A ingot samples were fabricated by vacuum spray casting to achieve a fine and homogenized microstructure. The ingot samples were subsequently hot-forged with the diameter of 220 mm at 1373 K. From the center to the surface of the forged Nimonic 80A, its average grain size decreased and its micro-Vickers hardness increased slightly. Solution treatment was carried out at 1353 K with 8 hours of air cooling followed by aging treatment, which was carried out in the range of 873-1073 K with various times from 0.5 to 256 hours. To set the optimum aging conditions, micro-Vickers hardness tests were performed. The maximum hardness value of 388.0 Hv was obtained by aging at 973 K for 32 hours. Also, tensile tests were performed for optimum aging conditions at room temperature and 873 K. The results can be used effectively to perform reasonable heat treatment of Nimonic 80A superalloy.
In order to compliant the stringent exhaust emission regulations, higher fuel efficiency and cleaner exhaust gas in combustion engines have been required. To improve combustion efficiency, an exhaust gas temperature is increasing, therefore higher temperature resistance is required for components in exhaust system, especially turbine wheel in turbocharger. IN100 looks quite attractive candidate as it has high temperature properties with low density, however it has low castability due to poor ductility at high temperature. In this study, the balance of Al and Ti composition was optimized from the base alloy IN100 to improve the high temperature ductility by expanding the γ single phase region below the solidification temperature, while obtaining the high temperature strength by maintaining the volume fraction of γ' phase equivalent to IN100 around 1000℃. Furthermore, the high temperature creep rupture life increased by adding a small amount of Ta. The alloy developed in this study has high castability, low density and high specific strength at high temperature.
Nickel-based superalloy IN 713C powders have been consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIPing). The microstructure and mechanical properties of the superalloys were investigated at the HIPing temperature ranging from $1030^{\circ}C$ to $1230^{\circ}C$. When the IN 713C powder was heated above ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ solvus temperature (about $1180^{\circ}C$), the microstructure was composed of the austenitic FCC matrix phase ${\gamma}$ plus a variety of secondary phases, such as ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates in ${\gamma}$ matrix and MC carbides at grain boundaries. The yield and tensile strengths of HIPed specimens at room temperature were decreased while the elongation and reduction of area were increased as the processing temperature increased. At $700^{\circ}C$, the strength was similar regardless of HIPing temperature; however, the ductility was drastically increased with increasing the temperature. It is considered that these properties compared to those of cast products are originated from the homogeneity of microstructure obtained from a PM process.
WC-10wt%Co-Al2O3 ceramic composites, using both the SHS (Self-propagating High Temperature Synthesis) synthesized WC powder method and commercial WC powder, were prepared by varing WC-Co/Al2O3 vol% ratio and sintering temperature (1350℃∼1650℃) for 1 hr in Ar atmosphere. Mechanical characterization has been investigated by Instron meterial testing system and Vicker's hardness test. Compositional and structural chracterizations were carried out by energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) data and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Electrical characterization was carried out by the electrical resistivity measurement using 4-point probe method. As sintering period increased and Al2O3 contents decreased in WC-10wt%Co-Al2O3 ceramic composite, shrinkage and relative density increased, resulting in maximum values at 1600℃. Also the major matrix phase changed with increasing Al2O3 content from 0 to 100 vol%. It was also identified by SEM, EDAX, and electrical resistivity measurement. Based on the results of analysis of flexural strength, toughness and hardness, the mechanical properties of WC-10wt%Co-Al2O3 ceramic composites using the SHS synthesized WC powder were better than those WC-10wt%Co-Al2O3 ceramic composites using commercial WC powder because WC-10wt%Co-Al2O3 ceramic composites using the SHS synthesized WC powder were sintered very well due to small initial particle size. By the addition of 40 vol% Al2O3 [60(WC=10wt%Co)-40Al2O3], it was possible to obtain a proper candidate as a superalloy.
High-temperature oxidation of a Ni-based superalloy was analyzed with samples taken from gas turbine blades, where the samples were heat-treated and thermally exposed. The effect of Cr/Ti/Al elements in the alloy on high temperature oxidation was investigated using an optical microscope, SEM/EDS, and TEM. A high-Cr/high-Ti oxide layer was formed on the blade surface under the heat-treated state considered to be the initial stage of high-temperature oxidation. In addition, a PFZ (γ' precipitate free zone) accompanied by Cr carbide of Cr23C6 and high Cr-Co phase as a kind of TCP precipitation was formed under the surface layer. Pits of several ㎛ depth containing high-Al content oxide was observed at the boundary between the oxide layer and PFZ. However, high temperature oxidation formed on the thermally exposed blade surface consisted of the following steps: ① Ti-oxide formation in the center of the oxide layer, ② Cr-oxide formation surrounding the inner oxide layer, and ③ Al-oxide formation in the pits directly under the Cr oxide layer. It is estimated that the Cr content of Ni-based superalloys improves the oxidation resistance of the alloy by forming dense oxide layer, but produced the σ or µ phase of TCP precipitation with the high-Cr component resulting in material brittleness.
The Ni-base superalloy GTD111 DS is used in the first stage blade of high power land-based gas turbines. Advanced repair technologies of the blade have been introduced to the gas turbine industry over recent years. The effect of the filler metal powder on Transient Liquid Phase bonding phenomenon and tensile mechanical properties was investigated on the GTD111 DS superalloy. At the filler metal powder N series, the base metal powders fully melted at the initial time and a large amount of the base metal near the bonded interlayer was dissolved by liquid inter metal. Liquid filler metal powder was eliminated by isothermal solidification which was controlled by the diffusion of B into the base metal. The solids in the bonded interlayer grew from the base metal near the bonded interlayer inward the insert metal during the isothermal solidification. The bond strength of N series filler metal powder was over 1000 MPa. and ${\gamma}'$ phase size of N series TLP bonded region was similar with base metal by influence of Ti, Al elements. At the insert metal powder M series, the Si element fluidity of the filler metal was good but microstructure irregularity on bonded region because of excessive Si element. Nuclear of solids formed not only from the base metal near the bonded interlayer but also from the remained filler metal powder in the bonded interlayer. When the isothermal solidification was finished, the content of the elements in the boned interlayer was approximately equal to that of the base metal. But boride and silicide formed in the base metal near the bonded interlayer. And these boride decreased with the increasing of holding time. The bond strength of M series filler metal powder was about 400 MPa.
The alloys required for fossil power plants are altered from stainless steel that has been used below $600^{\circ}C$ to Ni-based alloys that can operate at $700^{\circ}C$ for Hyper Super Critical (HSC) steam turbine. The IN740 alloy (Special Metals Co. USA) is proposed for improved rupture strength and corrosion resistance at high temperature. However, previous studies with experiments and simulations on stable phases at about $700^{\circ}C$ indicated the formation of the eta phase with the wasting of a gamma prime phase, which is the most important reinforced phase in precipitation hardened Ni alloys, and this resulted in the formation of precipitation free zones to decrease the strength. On the basis of thermodynamic calculation, the new Ni-based superalloy named LESS 1 (Low Eta Sigma Superalloy) was designed in this study to improve the strengthening effect and structure stability by depressing the formation of topologically close packed phases, especially sigma and eta phases at high temperature. A thermal exposure test was carried out to determine the microstructure stability of LESS 1 in comparison with IN740 at $800^{\circ}C$ for 300 hrs. The experimental results show that a needle-shaped eta phase was formed in the grin boundary and it grew to intragrain, and a precipitation free zone was also observed in IN740, but these defects were entirely controlled in LESS 1.
