  • A novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis (RO)/non-woven fabric (NWF) membrane was prepared by adding zinc oxide (ZnO) nanospheres ($30{\pm}10nm$) during the interfacial polymerization process of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on self-made polysulfone (PSF) membrane/polyester (PET) non-woven fabric support. The improved performance of TFN RO membrane was verified in terms of water contact angle (WCA), water flux, salt rejection, antifouling properties and chlorine resistance. The results showed that the WCA value of TFN RO surface had a continuous decrease with the increasing of ZnO content in MPD aqueous solution. The water flux of composite TFN RO membranes acquired a remarkable increase with a stable high solute rejection (94.5 %) in $1g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NaCl aqueous solution under the optimized addition amount of ZnO (1 wt%). The continuous testing of membrane separation performance after the immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution indicated that the introduction of ZnO nanospheres also dramatically enhanced the antifouling properties and the chlorine resistance of composite RO membranes.

  • While the substrate-type solar cells with Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorbers yield conversion efficiencies of up 20%[1], the highest published efficiency of Cu(In,Ga)Se2 superstrate solar cell is only 12.8% [2]. The commerciallized Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells are made in the substrate configuration having the stacking sequence of substrate (soda lime glass)/back contact (molybdenum)/absorber layer (Cu(In,Ga)Se2)/buffer layer (cadmium sulfide)/window layer (transparent conductive oxide)/anti reflection layer (MgF2) /grid contact. Thus, it is not possible to illuminate the substrate-type cell through the glass substrate. Rather, it is necessary to illuminate from the opposite side which requires an elaborate transparent encapsulation. In contrast to that, the configuration of superstrate solar cell allows the illumination through the glass substrate. This saves the expensive transparent encapsulation. Usually, the high quality Cu(In,Ga)Se2 absorber requires a high deposition temperature over 550C. Therefore, the front contact should be thermally stable in the temperature range to realize a successful superstrate-type solar cell. In this study, it was tried to make a decent superstrate-type solar cell with the thermally stable ZnO:Al layer obtained by adjusting its deposition parameters in magnetron sputtering process. The effect of deposition condition of the layer on the cell performance will be discussed together with hall measurement results and current-voltage characteristics of the cells.

  • This study was to investigate the surface properties of electrochemically oxidized Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy by anodic spark discharge technique. Anodizing was performed at current density 30 $mA/cm^2$ up to 300 V in electrolyte solutions containing $DL-{\alpha}$-glycerophosphate disodium salt hydrate($DL-{\alpha}$-GP) and calcium acetate (CA). Hydrothermal treatment was done at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs to produce a thin outermost layer of hydroxyapatite (HA). The bioactivity was evaluated from HA formation on the surfaces in a Hanks' solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The size of micropores and the thickness of oxide film increased and complicated multilayer by increasing the spark forming voltage. Needle-like HA crystals were observed on anodic oxide film after the hydrothermal treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. When increasing $DL-{\alpha}$-GP in electrolyte composition, the precipitated HA crystals showed the shape of thick and shorter rod. However, when increasing CA, the more fine needle shape HA crystals were appeared. The bioactivity in Hanks' solution was accelerated when the oxide films composed with strong anatase peak with presence of rutile peak. The increase of amount of Ca and P was observed in groups having bioactivity in Hanks' solution. The Ca/P ratio of the precipitated HA layer was equivalent to that of HA crystal and it was closer to 1.67 as increasing the immersion time in Hanks' solution.

  • Vacuum deposited 4,4',4"-tris(N-(2-naphthyl)-N-phenylamino)-triphenylamine (2-TNATA), used as a hole injection (HIL) material in OLEDs, is placed as a thin interlayer between indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode and a hole transporting layer (HTL) in the devices. C60-doped 2-TNATA:C60 (20 wt%) film was formed via co-evaporation process and molecular ordering and topology of 2-TNATA:C60 films were investigated using XRD and AFM. The J-V, L-V and current efficiency of multi-layered devices were characterized as well. Vacuum-deposited C60 film was molecularly oriented, but neither was 2-TNATA:C60 film due to the uniform dispersion of C60 molecules in the film. By using C60-doped 2-TNATA:C60 film as a HIL, the current density and luminance of a multi-layered ITO/2-TNATA:C60/NPD/$Alq_3$/LiF/Al device were significantly increased and the current efficiency of the device was increased from 4.7 to 6.7 cd/A in the present study.

  • A method to improve the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide by modification with a sensitizer and a metal oxide is proposed. To achieve this goal, we used metal oxides as dopants. In particular, $CaWO_4$ and $Gd_2O_2S$:Tb were used because their 2.6 eV and 2.2 eV band gap energy and optical properties have a large positive effect on photocatalysis. The improvement in the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ modified with $Gd_2O_2S$:Tb under ultraviolet light irradiation is described in a previous study. The present work focuses on the sensitization of metal oxide-modified $TiO_2$. Having observed the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of 3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic diimide in the wide visible-light region from 400 nm to 650 nm and the broad peaks in its photoluminescence spectra at 695 nm and 717 nm, we decided to use this perylene dye to sensitize modified $TiO_2$ to enhance its activity as a visible-light harvesting photocatalyst. We also explored the positive effects thin-film surface changes stemming from ultraviolet pre-treatment have on photocatalytic activity. Finally, we subjected several metal oxide-modified $TiO_2$ products sensitized by the perylene dye to ultraviolet pre-treatment, obtaining the most active photocatalysts.

  • Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) have wide range of application areas in transparent electrode for display devices, Transparent coating for solar energy heat mirrors, and electromagnetic wave shield. $SnO_2$ is intrinsically an n-type semiconductor due to oxygen deficiencies and has a high energy-band gap more than 3.5 eV. It is known as a transparent conducting oxide because of its low resistivity of $10^{-3}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and high transmittance over 90% in visible region. In this study, co-doping effects of Al and Y on the properties of $SnO_2$ were investigated. The addition of Y in $SnO_2$ was tried to create oxygen vacancies that increase the diffusivity of oxygen ions for the densification of $SnO_2$. The addition of Al was expected to increase the electron concentration. Once, we observed solubility limit of $SnO_2$ single-doped with Al and Y. $\{(x/2)Al_2O_3+(x/2)Y_2O_3\}-SnO_2$ was used for the source of Al and Y to prevent the evaporation of $Al_2O_3$ and for the charge compensation. And we observed the valence changes of aluminium oxide because generally reported of valence changes of aluminium oxide in Tin - Aluminium binary system. The electrical properties, solubility limit, densification and microstructure of $SnO_2$ co-doped with Al and Y will be discussed.

  • A supercapacitor was developed using an amorphous ruthenium oxide material. The electrode of supercapacitor was prepared using an amorphous ruthenium oxide, which was synthesized from ruthenium trichloide hydrate$(RuCl_3{\cdo5}xH_2O)$. Thin film of tantalum was used as a current collector because it had wide. potential window characteristics than titanium and 575304 materials. A supercapacitor was assembled with ruthenium oxide as an electrode active material and 4.8M sulfuric acid solution as an electrolyte. The specific capacitance of the electrode was tested by a cyclic voltammetry using a half cell. The maximum differential specific capacitances during the oxidative and the reductive scans were 710 and $645\;F/g-RuO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$, respectively. The average specific capacitance was $521\;F/g-RuO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$. The assembled supercapacitor was protonated to the potential level of 0.5V vs. SCE. Super-capacitor, which was adjusted to the appropriate protonation level, had the specific capacitance of $151\;F/g-RuO_2{\cdot}nH_2O$ based on the concept of full cell.

  • We investigated chemical states of a $Sb_2Te_3$ thin film with the polycrystalline phase by using high-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. The $Sb_2Te_3$ thin film was formed by sputtering. The rhombohedral phase was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. To remove the surface oxide, we performed $Ne^+$ ion sputtering for 1 hour with the beam energy of 1 kV and post-annealing at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in ultra-high vacuum. We obtained the Te and Sb 4d core-levels spectra with the peaks at the binding energies of 40.4 and 33.0 eV, respectively. The full-width of half maximum of both the Te and Sb $4d_{5/2}$ core-levels is 0.9 eV. The Te and Sb core-levels only show a single chemical state, and we also confirmed the stoichiometry of approximately 2 : 3.

  • The growth of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) in anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) template and their application to a field emitter are described. AAO templates were fabricated by anodizing bulk aluminum and sputtered thin Al film on Nb-coated Si wafers. After Co catalyst had been electrochemically deposited into the bottom of the pores in AAO template, CNTs were grown by pyrolyzing $C_2H_2$. Depending on the reaction conditions, CNTs grew up to or over the top of the pores in AAO template with different structures. The morphology and structure of CNTs were observed with a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. The diameter of CNTs strongly depended on the size of the pores in AAO template and the growing conditions. The electron field emission measurement of the samples resulted in the turn-on field of 1.9-2.2 $V/{\mu}m$ and the field enhancement factor of 2450-5200. The observation of high field enhancement factors is explained in terms of low field screening effect.

  • This study was performed to investigate the surface properties of electrochemically oxidized pure niobium by anodic oxide and hydrothermal treatment technique. Niobium specimens of $10mm\times10mm\times1.0mm$ in dimension were polished sequentially from $\#600,\;\#800,\;\#1000$ emery paper. The surface of pure niobium sperimens was anodized in an electrolytic solution that was dissolved calcium and phosphate in water. The electrolytic voltage was set in the range of 250 V and the current density was $10mA/cm^2$. The specimen was hydrothermal treated in high-pressure steam at $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours using an autoclave. And all specimens were immersed in the in the Hanks' solution nth pH 7.4 at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The surface of specimen was characterized by surface roughness, scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersion X-ray analysis(EDX), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy(XPS) test. The value of surface roughness was the highest in the anodized sample and $0.41{\pm}0.04\;{\mu}m$. The results of the SEM observation show that oxide layers of the multi porosity in the anodized sample were piled up on another, and hydroxyapatite crystal was precipitate from the surface of the hydrothermal treated sample. In the XPS analysis, O, Nb, C peak and small amounts of N peak were found in the polished specimens while Ca and P peak in addition to O, Nb, C and peak were observed in the hydrothermal treated sample.
