Flower-shaped organic-inorganic hybrid nanostructures, termed nanoflowers, have received considerable recent attention as they possess greatly enhanced activity, stability, durability, and even selectivity of entrapped organic biomolecules, which are much better than those from the conventional methods. They can be synthesized simply via co-incubation of organic and inorganic components in aqueous buffer at room temperature and yield hierarchical nanostructures with large surface-to-volume ratios, allowing for low-cost production by easy scale-up, as well as the high loading capacity of biomolecules without severe mass transfer limitations. Since a pioneering study reported on hybrid nanoflowers prepared with protein and copper sulfate, many other organic and inorganic components, which endow nanoflowers with diverse functionalities, have been employed. Thanks to these features, they have been applied in a diverse range of areas, including biosensors and biocatalysis. To highlight the progress of research on organic-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers, this review discusses their synthetic methods and mechanisms, structural and biological characteristics, as well as recent representative applications. Current challenges and future directions toward the design and development of multi-functional nanoflowers for their widespread utilization in biotechnology are also discussed.
Carbon nitride has drawn broad interdisciplinary attention in diverse fields such as catalyst, energy storage, gas adsorption, biomedical sensing and even imaging. Intensive studies on carbon dioxide (CO2) capture using carbon nitride materials with various nanostructures have been reported since it is needed to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere against climate change. This is mainly due to its tunable structural features, excellent physicochemical properties, and basic surface functionalities based on the presence of a large number of -NH or -NH2 groups so that the nanostructured carbon nitrides are considered as suitable materials for CO2 capture for future utilization as well. In this review, we summarize and highlight the recent progress in synthesis strategies of carbon nitride nanomaterials. Their superior CO2 adsorption capabilities are also discussed with the structural and textural features. An outlook on possible further advances in carbon nitride is also included.
Cobalt oxide nanostructure materials have been prepared by adding several concentrations of spectator Ni ions in solution, and analyzed by electron microscopy, X-day diffraction, calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis absorption, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electron microscopy results show that the morphology of the nanostructures is dramatically altered by changing the concentration of spectator ions. The bulk XRD patterns of $350^{\circ}C$-annealed samples indicate that the structure of the cobalt oxide is all of cubic Fd-3m $Co_3O_4$, and show that the major XRD peaks shift slightly with the concentration of Ni ions. In Raman spectroscopy, we can confirm the XRD data through a more obvious change in peak position, broadness, and intensity. For the un-sputtered samples in the XPS measurement process, the XPS peaks of Co 2p and O 1s for the samples prepared without Ni ions exhibit higher binding energies than those for the sample prepared with Ni ions. Upon $Ar^+$ ion sputtering, we found $Co_3O_4$ reduces to CoO, on the basis of XPS data. Our study could be further applied to controlling morphology and surface oxidation state.
Bimetallic Pd@Ni nanostructure exhibited enhanced co-catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of benzaldehyde compare to their monometallic counterparts. Impregnation of these mono/bimetallic nanostructures on mesoporous $TiO_2$ leads to several surface modifications. The bimetallic PNT-3 ($Pd_3@Ni_1/mTiO_2$) exhibited large surface area ($212m^2g^{-1}$), and low recombination rate of the charge carriers ($e^--h^+$). The hydrogenation reaction was analyzed under controlled experiments. It was observed that under UV-light irradiations and saturated hydrogen atmosphere the bimetallic PNT-3 photocatalyst display higher rate constant $k=5.31{\times}10^{-1}h^{-1}$ owing to reduction in the barrier height which leads to efficiently transfer of electron at bimetallic/$mTiO_2$ interface.
Envisaging the role of Co in theranautics and biomedicine it is immensely important to evaluate its antimicrobial activity. Hence in this study CoO thin nanosheets (CoO-TNs) were synthesized using wet chemical solution method at a very low refluxing temperature ($90^{\circ}C$) and short time (60 min). Scanning electron microscopy of the grown structure revealed microflowers ($2{\sim}3{\mu}m$) composed of thin sheets petals (60~80 nm). The thickness of each individual grown sheet varies from 10~20 nm. Antimicrobial activities of CoO-TNs against two Gram positive bacteria (Micrococcus luteus, and Staphylococcus aureus), and two Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were determined. A 98% and 65% growth inhibition of M. luteus and S. aureus respectively, was observed with $500{\mu}g/ml$ of CoO-TNs compared to 39 and 34% growth inhibition of E. coli and P. aeruginosa, respectively with the same concentration of CoO-TNs. Hence, synthesized CoO-TNs exhibited antimicrobial activity against Gram negative bacteria and an invariably higher activity against tested Gram positive bacteria. Therefore, synthesized CoO-TNs are less prone to microbial infections.

Among multicomponent nanostructures, hybrid nanocatalysts consisting of metal nanoparticle-semiconductor junctions offer an interesting platform to study the role of metal-oxide interfaces and hot electron flows in heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, we report that hot carriers generated upon photon absorption significantly impact the catalytic activity of CO oxidation. We found that Pt-CdSe-Pt nanodumbbells exhibited a higher turnover frequency by a factor of two during irradiation by light with energy higher than the bandgap of CdSe, while the turnover rate on bare Pt nanoparticles didn't depend on light irradiation. We also found that Pt nanoparticles deposited on a GaN substrate under light irradiation exhibit changes in catalytic activity of CO oxidation that depends on the type of doping of the GaN. We suppose that hot electrons are generated upon the absorption of photons by the semiconducting nanorods or substrates, whereafter the hot electrons are injected into the Pt nanoparticles, resulting in the change in catalytic activity. We discuss the possible mechanism for how hot carrier flows generated during light irradiation affect the catalytic activity of CO oxidation.

Nanoscopic $Co_3O_4$ particles were prepared using avian egg membrane as a template at $800^{\circ}C$. The prepared materials were subjected to XRD, SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopic studies. Cyclic voltammetry study shows a single step oxidation and reduction process. Electrochemical lithium insertion behavior of the materials was examined in coin cells of the 2032 configuration. The material showed a discharge capacity 600mAh/g even after 20 cycles.
Self-organized nanostructures of dots, holes or ripples produced by energetic ion bombardment have been reported in a wide variety of substrates. Ion bombardment on an alloy or compound also draws much attention because it can induce a surface composition modulation with a topographical surface structure evolution. V. B. Shenoy et al. further suggested that, in the case of alloy surfaces, the differences in the sputtering yields and surface diffusivities of the alloy components will lead to a lateral surface composition modulation [1]. In the present work, the classical molecular dynamics simulation of Ar bombardment on metallic alloys at room temperature revealed that this bombardment induces a surface composition modulation in layer-by-layer mode. In both the $Co_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}$ alloy and the CoAl B2 phase, the element of higher-sputtering yield is accumulated on the top surface layer, whereas it is depleted in lower layers. A kinetic model considering both the rearrangement and the sputtering of the substrate atoms agrees with the puzzling simulation results, which revealed that the rearrangement of the substrate atoms plays a significant role in the observed composition modulation.
Modem applications could benefit from multifunctional materials having anisotropic optical, electrical, thermal, or mechanical properties, especially when coupled with locally controlled distribution of the directional response. Such materials are difficult to engineer by conventional methods, but the electric field-aided technology presented herein is able to locally tailor electroactive composites. Applying an electric field to a polymer in its liquid state allows the orientation of chain- or fiber-like inclusions or phases from what was originally an isotropic material. Such composites can be formed from liquid solutions, melts, or mixtures of pre-polymers and cross-linking agents. Upon curing, a 'created composite' results; it consists of these 'pseudofibers' embedded in a matrix. One can also create oriented composites from embedded spheres, flakes, or fiber-like shapes in a liquid plastic. Orientation of the externally applied electric field defines the orientation of the field-aided self-assembled composites. The strength and duration of exposure of the electric field control the degree of anisotropy created. Results of electromechanical testing of these modified materials, which are relevant to sensing and actuation applications, are presented. The materials' micro/nanostructures were analyzed using microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques.
