Statement of problem. Composite resin-veneered metal restorations can be used as an alternative to porcelain-fused-metal restorations. But, because of the relatively low bond strength of veneering composite to metal framework, various surface treatment methods have been introduced to improve the bond strength. Purpose. The object of this study was to compare the shear bond strength of different combinations of each of the two bonding systems and each of the two composite veneering resins to cp-Ti/Co-Cr alloy. Material and methods. Two resin bonding systems (metal conditioner containing MEPS monomer, tribochemical silicoating system) and two composite resins (Gradia, Sinfony) were tested on cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy. Then, according to manufacturers' instructions, resin bonding systems and composite resins were applied. All test specimens were divided into four groups for each alloy; I) sandblast + Metal Primer II + Gradia (MG), II) sandblast + Metal Primer II + Sinfony (MS), III) Rocatec + Gradia (RG), IV) Rocatec + Sinfony (RS). The shear bond strength was determined using a universal testing machine and all data were statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test at the significance level of 0.05. Results. The mean (standard deviations) of shear bond strength according to the combinations of two bonding systems and two composite resins to cp-Ti arranged from 16.44 MPa to 17.07 MPa and the shear bond strength to Co-Cr alloy ranged from 16.26 MPa to 17.70 MPa. The result shows that the difference were not statistically significant. Conclusion. The shear bond strengths of composite resins to both cast cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy were not significantly different between the metal conditioner and the tribochemical silicoating system. And no differences in bond strength were found between cp-Ti and Co-Cr alloy.
PURPOSE. Considering the importance of metal-ceramic bond, the present study aimed to compare the bond strength of ceramics to cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloys made by casting and selective laser melting (SLM). MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this in-vitro experimental study, two sample groups were prepared, with one group comprising of 10 Co-Cr metal frameworks fabricated by SLM method and the other of 10 Co-Cr metal frameworks fabricated by lost wax cast method with the dimensions of $0.5{\times}3{\times}25\;mm$ (following ISO standard 9693). Porcelain with the thickness of 1.1 mm was applied on a $3{\times}8-mm$ central rectangular area of each sample. Afterwards, bond strengths of the samples were assessed with a Universal Testing Machine. Statistical analysis was performed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and T-test. RESULTS. Bond strength in the conventionally cast group equaled $74.94{\times}16.06\;MPa$, while in SLM group, it equaled $69.02{\times}5.77\;MPa$. The difference was not statistically significant ($P{\leq}.05$). CONCLUSION. The results indicated that the bond strengths between ceramic and Co-Cr alloys made by casting and SLM methods were not statistically different.
Traditionally, many kinds of mechanical bonding techniques were used for bonding resins to the surface of the metal alloys. If there is a seperation between resin and metal junction by stress accumulation and temperature change of oral cavity, the cracks or crazing may occur, accompanied by failure of resin bonding to metal. This study was designed to compare the shear bond strength of the type IV gold alloy and Cr-Co alloy surfaces treated with various methods and thermocycling. Universal Instron (Model 1000) and scanning electron microscope (JEOL, Japan) was used to record the shear bond strength of 5 groups. Forty specimens were made for each group ; group 1 was treated with sandblasting only, group 2 was coated with V-primer after sandblasting, group 3 was coated with Metal primer, group 4 wase coated with MR Bond and group 5 was coated with silane. After treated with various methods, thermocycling was done for half of the each group. The surfaces of failed pattern were observed with SEM. The results were as follows : 1. Shear bond strength of the group 1 was lower than that of another groups in type IV gold alloys and bond strength of the group 1, 2 were lower than that of group 3, 4, 5 in Cr-Co alloys. 2. Shear bond strength of the gold alloy with resin was higher than that of Cr-Co alloy when specimens were coated with V-primer. 3. Shear bond strength of the Co-Cr alloys with resin was higher than that of gold alloys when specimens were coated with Metal primer. 4. The bond strength of all specimens did not decreased significantly after thermocycling. 5. Adhesive failures were found in group 1 and Cr-Co alloy in group 2, but adhesive and cohesive failures were found in another groups.
PURPOSE. The aim of the present study was to record the metal-ceramic bond strength of a feldspathic dental porcelain and a Co-Cr alloy, using the Direct Metal Laser Sintering technique (DMLS) for the fabrication of metal substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten metal substrates were fabricated with powder of a dental Co-Cr alloy using DMLS technique (test group) in dimensions according to ISO 9693. Another ten substrates were fabricated with a casing dental Co-Cr alloy using classic casting technique (control group) for comparison. Another three substrates were fabricated using each technique to record the Modulus of Elasticity (E) of the used alloys. All substrates were examined to record external and internal porosity. Feldspathic porcelain was applied on the substrates. Specimens were tested using the three-point bending test. The failure mode was determined using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The statistical analysis was performed using t-test. RESULTS. Substrates prepared using DMLS technique did not show internal porosity as compared to those produced using the casting technique. The E of control and test group was $222{\pm}5.13GPa$ and $227{\pm}3GPa$, respectively. The bond strength was $51.87{\pm}7.50MPa$ for test group and $54.60{\pm}6.20MPa$ for control group. No statistically significant differences between the two groups were recorded. The mode of failure was mainly cohesive for all specimens. CONCLUSION. Specimens produced by the DMLS technique cover the lowest acceptable metal-ceramic bond strength of 25 MPa specified in ISO 9693 and present satisfactory bond strength for clinical use.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of four metal surface treatments on the shear bond strength of reline resin to Ni-Cr alloy. The denture base metal used in this study was Ni-Cr alloy(Ticonium Premium 100. Ticonium Co., U.S.A.). 120 specimens were divided into five metal surface treatments: sandblasting only, MR. BOND(Tokuyama Corp.. Japan), Cesead Opaque Primer(Kuraray Co., Japan), METALPRIMER II(GC Corp., Japan) and Super-Bond C&B(Sun Medical Co., Japan) after sandblasting. They were bonded with one of three reline resins Mild Rebaron(GC Corp., Japan), Mild Rebaron LC(GC Corp., Japan) and Meta Base M(Sun Medical Co., Japan). Then they were thermocycled 1,000 times at temperature of $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$. The shear bond strengths were measured using the universal testing machine(Instron, Model 4301, England) with a cross-head speed of 2 mm/min. The results were as follows : 1. All metal primers and adhesive cement significantly improved the bond strength of reline resin to Ni-Cr alloy compared with sandblasted specimens. 2. In Mild Rebaron and Mild Rebaron LC. Cesead Opaque Primer showed the highest bond strength, but the differences among Cesead Opaque Primer, MR. BOND and METALPRIMER II were not significant. The bond strength of Cesead Opaque Primer was significantly different with that of Super-Bond C&B. 3. In Meta Base M, Super-Bond C&B showed the highest bond strength, but there was no difference between Super-Bond C&B and three metal primers. 4. There was no difference in the bond strength between Mild Rebaron and Mild Rebaron LC when metal surface was treated with the same method. 5. The bond strengths of Mild Rebaron and Mild Rebaron LC treated with Cesead Opaque Primer were higher than that of Meta Base M. The bond strengths of Mild Rebaron treated with MR. BOND and METALPRIMER II was higher than that of Meta Base M, However, there was no difference among three reline resins treated with Super-Bond C&B.

Selective laser melting (SLM) manufactures an alloy using laser as a heat source, and has recently been introduced in the dental industry. However, there is a lack of analytical research on metal-ceramic restorations achieved by SLM. This study evaluates and compares the metal-ceramic bond strength of Co-Cr alloys produced by selective laser melting and casting methods. Co-Cr samples required for this study were produced through the sintering process of ceramics, by applying the SLM and CAST methods. The metal-ceramic bond strength was measured by applying the shear bond strength test. In order to determine the area fraction of adherent ceramic, Si content of the specimen was measured using scanning electron microscopy SEM/ EDS. Results of the metal-ceramic bond strength and AFAC were analyzed by t-test (α = 0.05). No significant difference was observed comparing the bond strength of SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys (P> 0.05). However, the SLM group had much better ceramic adherence than the CAST group (P < 0.001). Moreover, oxidation characteristics were similar for both SLM and CAST Co-Cr alloys, but metal structures were different. These results imply that although the bond of ceramic and Co-Cr alloy is not related to the manufacturing method, SLM alloys impart better ceramic adherence. This indicates that alloys made with SLM can be used to fabricate upper implant prostheses in the future. In particular, it is expected to overcome the shortcomings of the CAST method, and save time and cost.
Co-0.5C-(15~20)Cr-20Ni-8W-(2~7)Fe alloy bond in diamond-impregnated abrasive tool was synthesized by ball-milling and mechanical alloying process. When the powders were mechanical alloyed for 6h, micro-welding in most metal powders was observed irrespective of addition of stearic acid. Without stearic acid in metal powders, partial-ly coarse powders were obtained, which could be unfaverable to the densification of composite of composite powders. The hot-pressed compacts showed rupture strength of 1100MPa and hardness of about $46H_{RC}$, respectively.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of metal primers on the bonding of dental alloys and veneer resin. Polyvinylpyrrolidone solution's tarnish effect on bonding strength was also investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Disk-shape metal specimens (diameter 8 mm, thickness 1.5 mm) were made from 3 kinds of alloy (Co-Cr, Ti and Au-Ag-Pd alloy) and divided into 4 groups per each alloy. Half specimens (n=12 per group) in tarnished group were immersed into polyvinylpyrrolidone solution for 24 hours. In Co-Cr and Ti-alloy, Alloy Primer (MDP + VBATDT) and MAC-Bond II (MAC-10) were applied, while Alloy Primer and V-Primer (VBATDT) were applied to Au-Ag-Pd alloys. After surface treatment, veneering composite resin were applied and shear bond strength test were conducted. RESULTS. Alloy Primer showed higher shear bond strength than MAC-Bond II in Co-Cr alloys and Au-Ag-Pd alloy (P<.05). However, in Ti alloy, there was no significant difference between Alloy Primer and MAC-Bond II. Tarnished Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy surfaces presented significantly decreased shear bond strength. CONCLUSION. Combined use of MDP and VBATDT were effective in bonding of the resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloy. Tarnish using polyvinylpyrrolidone solution negatively affected on the bonding of veneer resin to Co-Cr and Au-Ag-Pd alloys.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of using a Au bonding agent applied on cp-Ti and nonprecious metal-gold-ceramic system. Metallic frameworks(diameter: 5mm, height: 20mm)(N=56, n=7per group) cast in Ni-Cr alloy, Co-Cr alloy and cp-Ti were obtained using acrylic templates and airborne particle abraded with $110{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide. Au bonding agent was applied on wash opaque firing as intermediate layer. SEM and SEM/EDS line profile were performed on the cutting the cross-section of the metal substrate-porcelain with intermediate Au coating. Groups were tested using shear bond strength(SBS) testing at 0.5mm/min. The mean SBS values for the ceramic-Au layer-metal combination were significantly higher than those ceramic-metal combination. While ceramic-Au layer-cp-Ti combinations failed to increase bond strength instead of using a titanium bonding porcelain. The appication of using Au intermediate layer significantly improve the bond strength combination with metal-ceramic system.
Statement of problem: For the long-term success of removable partial dentures, the bonding between metal framework and denture base resin is one of the important factors. To improve bonding between those, macro-mechanical retentive form that is included metal framework design has been generally used. However it has been known that sealing at the interface between metal framework and denture base resin is very weak, because this method uses mechanical bonding. Purpose: Many studies has been made to find a simple method which induces chemical bond, now various bonding system is applied to clinic. In this experiment, shear bond strengths of heat-cured denture base resin to the surface-treated Co-Cr alloy were measured before and after thermocycling. Chemically treated groups with Alloy $Primer^{TM}$, Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$, and tribochemically treated group with $Rocatec^{TM}$ system were compared to the beadtreated control group. The data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA. Result: 1. Shear bond strength of bead-treated group is highest, and Alloy $Primer^{TM}$ treated group, Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$ treated group, RocatecTM system treated group were followed. Statistically significant differences were found in each treated group(p<0.05). 2. Surface treatment and thermocycling affected shear bond strength(p<0.05), however there was no interaction between two factors(p>0.05). 3. Shear bond strengths of bead-treated group and Alloy $Primer^{TM}$ treated group showed no statistically significant difference before and after thermocycling(p>0.05), and those of Super-Bond $C&B^{TM}$ treated group and $Rocatec^{TM}$ system treated group showed statistically significant difference after thermocycling(p<0.05).
