  • The effect of acidity and the metal surface area of the Pd loaded zeolite catalysts; prepared from $Ca^{2+}-,\;La^{3+}-,\;NH_4^+-$exchanged Y and dealuminated HY was studied for the reaction of n-butane. The amount of strong acid site determined by the temperature programmed desorption of ammonia increased in the order NaY < CaY < LaY. Total amount of acid site decreased with increasing degree of dealumination, but the portion of strong acid site increased with increasing $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio. The effective metal surface area determined by the CO adsorption technique was large for those zeolite catalysts having strong acidity. It was found that conversion of n-butane was strongly dependent on the acidity and the effective metal surface area of the catalysts. The fact that the conversion of n-butane was proportional to the effective metal surface area suggests that the dehydrogenation by metallic component is the primary step in the reaction of n-butane.

  • In this study, continuous microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were operated using non-precious metal catalysts such as iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) and cobalt tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin (CoTMPP)) as alternative cathode catalysts for platinum. To evaluate MFCs performance, operational conditions of organic loading rate (OLR) (0.5~3 g COD/L/d) and hydraulic retention rate (HRT) (0.25~1 day) were changed. Power density of MFCs were determined by cathode electrode performance. The maximum power density was $3.3W/m^3$ with platinum at OLR 3 g COD/L/d. Given each HRTs at 1 g COD/L/d, FePc showed to be a better alternative for platinum than CoTMPP because the power density of MFC with FePc was similar to that of MFC with platinum. CoTMPP catalyst, however, showed the lowest power density due to increase of internal resistance during continuous operation.

  • Immobilized polyethylene glycols onto metal oxides such as ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2$ and $TiO_2$ were used as phase transfer catalysts for the room temperature synthesis of aniline from nitrobenzene and ironpentacarbonyl. The amount of attached PEG molecules increased with specific surface area of metal oxides. Among the immobilized catalysts tested PEG/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ showed the highest activity. The reaction rate increased with the chain length of PEG mole-cules and the aqueous NaOH concentration. Mechanistic study carried out using infrared spectrometer revealed that the role of PEG was to increase the formation of $HFe(CO)_4{^-}$ ion, which is known as active species, and its movement from aqueous to organic phase.

  • Naphtha cracking bottom oil was reformed with heat treatment and then spun at $310^{\circ}C$. These pitch-based carbon fibers were carbonized at $1000^{\circ}C$ after oxidation at $280^{\circ}C$, for 90 min. These fibers were chemically activated with molar ratio of KOH/CF (1 : 1) at different temperatures ($250{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) for 1 hr. The process of activation was characterized with DTA, TGA, BET surface area and pore size distribution. The activation of fibers by KOH was performed by several process. One is the reduction process that carbon fiber was reacted with $K_2O$ produced from dehydration process above $400^{\circ}C$. The other is the process that $K_2CO_3$ was directly reacted with carbon fiber. At $800^{\circ}C$, the activation was performed by catalyzed mechanism that $K_2O$ was obtained from the reaction of metal potassium with $CO_2$, then was changed to $K_2CO_3$. At $870^{\circ}C$, the activation was also observed that activation mechanism was promoted by metal catalyst with $CO_2$ from decomposition of $K_2CO_3$. The specific surface area of prepared activated carbon fibers was dependent on the activation mechanism. The specific surface area was in the range of $1519{\sim}2000\;cm^3/g$ and was the largest prepared at $870^{\circ}C$. The pores developed were mostly micropores which was very narrow and uniform. The total pore volume was $0.58{\sim}0.77\;cm^3/g$.

  • Study on clean and efficient utilization technology for low rank coal with high moisture content is actively ongoing due to limited reserves of petroleum and of high grade coal and serious climate change caused by fossil fuel usage. In the present study, supercritical water gasification of low rank coal was performed. With increasing reaction temperature, content of combustible gases such as $H_2$ and $CH_4$ in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ content decreased. As the reaction pressure increased from 210 to 300 bar, the $CO_2$ content in the syngas increased while the hydrocarbon gas content decreased. The $H_2$ and $CH_4$ content in the syngas increased slightly with pressure. With the addition of Pd, Pt, and Ru catalysts, it was possible to improve the production of $H_2$. Moreover, the increase of active metal content in the catalyst increased the $H_2$ productivity. The Ru catalyst shows the best performance for increasing the $H_2$ content in the syngas, while decreasing the $CO_2$ content.

  • In this study, a Cu/hexaaluminate catalyst was prepared by a co-precipitation method, and then a binder was added to form a pellet. A catalyst in which Ni and Ru promoters were added to a Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst was prepared. This study focused on examining the effect of the addition of Ni and Ru promoters on the properties of Cu/hexaaluminate catalysts and the decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellants. Cu/hexaaluminate catalysts had few micropores and well-developed mesopores. When Ru was added as a promoter to the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst, the pore volume and pore size increased significantly. In the thermal decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellant, the decomposition onset temperature was 170.2 ℃. Meanwhile, the decomposition onset temperature was significantly reduced to 93.5 ℃ when the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst was employed. When 1% or 3% of Ru were added as a promoter, the decomposition onset temperatures of ADN-based liquid monopropellant were lowered to 91.0 ℃ and 83.3 ℃, respectively. This means that the Ru promoter is effective in lowering the decomposition onset temperature of the ADN-based liquid monopropellant because the Ru metal has excellent activity in the decomposition reaction of ADN-based liquid monopropellant, simultaneously contributing to the increase of the pore volume and pore size. After the thermal treatment at 1,200 ℃ and decomposition of ADN-based liquid monopropellant were repeatedly performed, it was confirmed that the addition of Ru could enhance the heat resistance of the Cu/hexaaluminate pellet catalyst.

  • Metal catalysts such as Fe, Co, Mn, and Pd supported on the activated carbon (AC) were prepared to improve functional groups for the chemical adsorption and catalytic ozonation. Following ascending orders of the phenol decomposition rate, dissolved ozone decomposition ratio and TOC (total organic carbon) removal from experimental results of advanced oxidation process (AOP) were observed: Fe-AC < AC < Co-AC < Mn-AC < Pd-AC. BET analysis results showed that the physical properties of the metal impregnated activated carbon had no effect on the catalytic ozonation, and the catalytic effect was dependent on the kind of impregnated metal. The ratio of the formed concentration of OH radical to that of ozone (RCT) was measured by using the decomposition outcome of p-chlorobenzoic acid, a probe compound that reacts rapidly with OH radical but slowly with ozone. The measured values of RCT were $5.48{\times}10^{-9}$ and $1.47{\times}10^{-8}$ for the ozone alone and activated carbon processes, respectively, and $2.13{\times}10^{-9}$, $1.51{\times}10^{-8}$, $4.77{\times}10^{-8}$, and $5.58{\times}10^{-8}$ for Fe-AC, Co-AC, Mn-AC, and Pd-AC processes, respectively.

  • In the present paper, the thermal deactivation characteristics of plate-type commercial $V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2$ SCR catalyst were investigated. For this purpose, the plate-type catalyst was calcined at different temperatures ranging from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. Structural and morphological changes were characterized byXRD, specific surface area, porosity, SEM-EDS and also NOx conversion with ammonia according to the calcine temperature. The NOx conversion decreased with increasing calcine temperature, especially when the catalysts were calcined at temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$. This is because the crystal phase of $TiO_2$ changed from anatase to rutile, and the $TiO_2$ grain growth and $CaWO_4$ crystal phase were formed, which reduced the specific surface area and pore volume. In addition, $V_2O_5$, which is a catalytically active material, was sublimated or vaporized over $700^{\circ}C$, and a metal mesh used as a support of the catalyst occurred intergranular corrosion and oxidation due to the formation of Cr carbide.

  • DME is acronym of dimethyl ether, which is spotlighted as an ideal fuel to produce hydrogen due to its high hydrogen/carbon ratio, high energy density and easiness to carry. In this research, we calculated thermodynamic hydrogen (or syngas) yield from DME autothermal reforming and compared to other fuels. The reforming efficiency was about 80% above $700^{\circ}C$. Lower OCR has higher reforming efficiency but, it requires additional heat supply since the reactions are endothermic. SCR has no significant effect on the reforming efficiency. The optimized condition is $700^{\circ}C$, SCR 1.5, OCR 0.45 without additional heat supply. Comparing to other commercial gaseous fuels (methane and propane), DME has higher selectivity of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ than the others due to the oxygen atom in the molecule. To apply DME autothermal reforming to real system, a proper catalyst is required. Therefore, it is performed the experiment comparing various novel metal catalysts based on CGO. Experiments were performed at calculated condition. The composition of product was measured and reforming efficiency was calculated. The catalysts have similar efficiency at high temperature(${\sim}800^{\circ}C$) but, CGO-Ru has the highest efficiency at low temperature ($600^{\circ}C$).

  • Electrocatalytic effects for the reduction of thionyl chloride in $LiAICI_4/SOCl_2$ electrolyte solution containing Schiff base M(II) (M; Co and Fe) complexes are evaluated by determining kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at a glassy carbon electrode. The charge transfer process during the reduction of thionyl chloride is affected by the concentration of the catalyst. The catalytic effects are demonstrated from both a shift of the reduction potential for the thionyl chloride toward a more positive direction and an increase in peak currents. Catalytic effects are larger in thionyl chloride solutions containing the binuclear [M(II) $_2$ (TSBP)] complex rather than mononuclear [M(II)(BSDT)] complexes. Significant improvements in the cell performance have been noted in terms of both thermodynamics and activation energy for the thionyl chloride reduction. The activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius plots is 4.5-5.9 kcal/mole at bare glassy carbon electrodes. The activation energy calculated for the catalyst containing solution is 3.3-4.9 kcalmole, depending on whether the temperature is lowered or rasied.
