Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

Discrete joint network approach has widely been used to investigate the hydraulic behavior of jointed rock masses. In general, joints will undergo deformation due to stress redistribution induced by construction of underground openings, hence joint aperture is often assumed to have a probability distribution rather than to be a constant value. In real situations, however, it is more reasonable to take into account the effect of stress change on aperture values by calculating joint deformation. In this report, a mechanical process has been developed to determine the joint opening or closure based on a statistically generated joint network model. By performing numerical analyses, some significant results on the hydro-mechanical behavior of jointed rock masses have been summarized.
An investigation into the response statistics of a spring-pendulum system whose base oscillates randomly along vertical and horizontal line is made. The spring-pendulum system with internal resonance examined is known to be a good model for a variety of engineering systems, including ship motions with nonlinear coupling between pitching and rolling motions. The Fokker-Planck equation is used to generate a general first-order differential equations for the random responses of the system are reduced to a system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. In view of equilibrium solutions of this system and their stability, the response statistics is examined. It is seen that increase in horizontal excitation level leads to a decreased width of the internal resonance region.
In this paper, the flow field with steady, axisymmetric flow characteristics in cylinder has been numerically investigated. The prediction of flow in cylinder was compared to experimental result. The turbulence closure being applied was K-${\epsilon}$ model and numerical scheme was Hybrid and Power-law scheme. The results of numerical computation showed some deviation from exper- imental data in the in cial region of cylinder, where streamline curvature is significant. However, the computational results agree qualitatively well with Mores's experimental results and the difference between Hybrid and Power-law schows similar results
A parametric study on a fluidic oscillator was performed numerically in this work. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved to analyze the flow in the fluidic oscillator. As turbulence closure, $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was employed. Validation of the numerical results was performed by comparing numerical results with experimental data for frequency of the oscillation. The parametric study was performed using five geometric parameters. Performance of the fluidic oscillator was evaluated in terms of velocity ratio and pressure drop. The results show that the inlet channel width and the distance between splitters are important factors in determining the performance of the fludic oscillator.
Air Conditioner has become a popular comfort providing device since two decades, whether in an office or home especially for warm and wet climate countries. The RAC (Room Air Conditioner) is widely used in various working spaces and residences. It composed of heat exchager, cross-flow fan, stabilizer, rearguider and blade of diffuser region, etc. In this study, numerical analyses based on the prediction of transient phenomena were carried out to investigate the flow characteristics in the RAC, including the impeller, the rearguider, the stabilizer and the blade of the diffuser region. Using a commercial code, FLUENT, the velocity, pressure and streamlines were obtained with unsteady, turbulent flow and no-slip condition. The angular velocities of impeller are located in the 900 rpm. Turbulent closure was achieved using a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. A moving reference frame (MRF) approach was adopted to simulate the flow field generated by impeller in the RAC. Results were graphically depicted with various geometrical configurations and operating conditions.
Drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements have been made on a range of slanted-base ogive cylinders, using the KANOMAX wind tunnel and balance system. Test Reynolds numbers(based on model maximum diameter) varied from $0.54{\times}10^{5}{\;}to{\;}1.56{\times}10^{5}$. Crossflow velocity maesurement was conducted by 5-hole pitot tube at $Re_{D}=1.46{\times}10^{5}$. For two base angle $({\theta}=30$ and 45 deg.), aerodynamic forces and moment were measured with increasing angle of attack(0~30 deg.). Two types of wake flow were observed, a quasisymetric turbulent closure or a longitudinal vortex flow. Aerodynamic characteristics differ dramatically between the two wake types. It was found that the drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients increased with increasing angle of attack.
An axisymmetric Navier-Stokes procedure has been developed to analyze the pulse jet flow in a ceramic filter unit for the dust dislodging process. Using Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model as a closure relationship, the SIAF(Scalar Implicit Approximate Factorization) algorithm together with the ${\delta}^k-Correction$ iterative time marching scheme is adopted to solve the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations. After some validation tests, the code has been applied to solve the pulse jet flow and examine the effects of geometry and reservoir pressure condition on the pressure level inside the filter unit. To avoid dealing with the uncertainty of such factors as the cohesion of the collected dust and the adhesion of the dust to the medium and also to simplify the analysis, the filter wall is assumed to be impermeable. The results for various test cases are presented.
This study deals with the shape optimization of a wire spacer fuel assembly of Liquid Metal Reactors (LMRs). The Response Surface based optimization Method is used as an optimization technique with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer using Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model as a turbulence closure. Two design variables namely, pitch to fuel rod diameter ratio and lead length to fuel rod diameter ratio are selected. The objective function is defined as a combination of the heat transfer rate and the inverse of friction loss with a weighting factor. Three level full-factorial method is used to determine the training points. In total, nine experiments have been performed numerically and the resulting datas have been analysed for optimization study. Also, a comparison has been made between the optimized surface and the reference one in this study.
This work presents a numerical procedure to optimize the elliptic-shaped pin fin arrays to enhance turbulent heat transfer. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Four variables including major axis length, minor axis length, pitch and the pin fin length nondimensionalized by duct height are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. D-optimal design is used to reduce the data points, and, with only 28 points, reliable response surface is obtained. Optimum shapes of the pin-fin arrays have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.
