Biofuel has been considered as promising renewable energy to solve various problems that result from increasing usage of fossil fuels since the early 20th century. In terms of chemical and physical properties as fuel, biobutanol has more merits than bioethanol. It could replace gasoline for transportation and industrial demand is increasing significantly. Production of butanol can be achieved by chemical synthesis or by microbial fermentation. The water hyacinth, an aquatic macrophyte, originated from tropical South America but is currently distributed all over the world. Water hyacinth has excellent water purification capacity and it can be utilized as animal feed, organic fertilizer, and biomass feedstock. However, it can cause problems in the rivers and lakes due to its rapid growth and dense mats formation. In this study, the potential of water hyacinth was evaluated as a lignocellulosic biomass feedstock in biobutanol fermentation by using Clostridium beijerinckii. Water hyacinth was converted to water hyacinth hydrolysate medium through pretreatment and saccharification. It was found that productivity of water hyacinth hydrolysate medium on biobutanol production was comparable to general medium.

Optimum culture conditions and medium composition for hydrogen production by Clostridium beijerinckii KCTC 1785 were investigated. Initial pH and temperature for growth were 7.0 and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. Agitation accelerated the hydrogen production. Although C. beijerinckii KCTC 1785 could grow up to 6%(w/v) glucose in the medium, the optimum glucose concentration for hydrogen production was 4% and hydrogen content in the biogas was 37%(v/v). However, the economical glucose concentration for hydrogen production was 1% regarding to the residual glucose which was not used in the medium. During hydrogen fermentation, acetic and butyric acid were produced simultaneously. High concentrations of acetic(>5,000 mg/L) or butyric(>3,000 mg/L) acid inhibited hydrogen production. When pH was maintained at 5.5 in the batch fermentation, 1,728 mL of hydrogen was produced from 0.5% glucose within 15 hr. $H_2$ yield was estimated to be 1.23 mol $H_2/mol$ glucose. It was found that yeast extract or tryptose in the medium was essential for hydrogen production.
We examined butanol fermentation by Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 using various hydrolyzates obtained from rice bran which is one of the most abundant agricultural by-products in Korea and Japan. In order to increase the amount of fermentable sugars in the hydrolyzates of rice bran, various hydrolysis procedures were applied. Total eight different hydrolyzates were prepared using rice bran (RB) and defatted rice bran (DRB) with enzyme or acid treatment and both. Each hydrolyzate was evaluated in terms of total sugar concentration and butanol production after fermentation by C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052. Acid treatment yielded more sugar than enzyme treatment and combined treatment with enzyme and acid yielded even more sugars as compared to single treatment with enzyme or acid. As a result, the highest sugar concentration (33 g/L) was observed from the hydrolyzate from DRB (100 g/L) with combined treatment using enzyme and acid. Prior to perform fermentation of the hydrolyzates, we examined the effect of P2 solution containing yeast extract, buffer, minerals, and vitamins on production of butanol during the fermentation. Fermentation of the hydrolyzates with or without additionof P2 was performed using C. beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 in a 1 L anaerobic bioreactor. Although the hydrolyzates RB were able to support growth and butanol production, addition of P2 solution into the hydrolyzates significantly improved cell growth and butanol production. Highest butanol production (12.24 g/L) was observed from the hydrolyzate of DRB with acid and enzyme treatment after supplementation of P2 solution.

Hydrogen production and its dynamics were investigated in the continuous anaerobic digestion process using Clostridium beijerinckii Donker 1926. In this work, glucose was used as a substrate and hydraulic retention times (HRT) were 0.5, 0.25 or 0.125 day. The removal efficiency of carbohydrate was over 99% under all of HRT conditions. As HRT was shorter, COD removal efficiency became lower while hydrogen content in the total gas and hydrogen production rate became higher. The cell growth yield and hydrogen production yield were 0.27 g-VSS/g-glucose and 0.26 L/g-glucose, respectively, at the steady state. It is expected that the microorganism is able to produce hydrogen when used in the wastewater treatment containing carbohydrate such as glucose. Also, the results in this study could be applied to the actual hydrogen gas production, a promising alternative energy.

Cassava constitutes an abundant substrate in tropical regions. The production of butanol in ABE fermentation by Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 using cassava flour (CF) was scaled-up to bioreactor level (5 L). Optimized fermentation conditions were applied; that is, $40^{\circ}C$, 60 g/l CF, and enzymatic pretreatment of the substrate. The batch fermentation profile presented an acidogenic phase for the first 24 h and a solventogenic phase afterwards. An average of 37.01 g/l ABE was produced after 83 h, with a productivity of 0.446 g/l/h. Butanol production was 25.71 g/l with a productivity of 0.310 g/l/h, high or similar to analogous batch processes described for other substrates. Solvent separation by different combinations of fractioned and azeotropic distillation and liquid-liquid separation were assessed to evaluate energetic and economic costs in downstream processing. Results suggest that the use of cassava as a substrate in ABE fermentation could be a cost-effective way of producing butanol in tropical regions.
Depletion of petroleum increased the need of alternative energy and chemical resources. Biomass, a renewable resource, can be transformed to bioenergy and biomaterials, and the materials from biomass will ultimately substitute petroleum based energy and chemical compounds. In this perspective, production of C4-C6 compounds for bioenergy and biomaterials are described for understating of current research progress. n-Butanol and n-butyric acid, the major C4 compounds, are produced by Clostridium tyrobutyricum, Clostridium beijerinckii, and Clostridium acetobutylicum. n-Hexanoic acid, a typical C6 compound, is produced by Clostridium kluyveri and Megasphaera elsdenii. Reported maximum amount of n-butanol, n-butyric acid and n-hexanoic acid was 21, 55, and 19 g/L, respectively, and extraction of these C4-C6 compounds are induced increase production by those anaerobic bacteria. In addition, a new bacterium Clostridium sp. BS-1 produced 5 g/L of n-hexanoic acid using galactitol.
As part of a larger study of indigenous prokaryotic species diversity in South Korea, various samples from Namhangang were subjected to analyses. Fresh water, underwater sediment, and moss-inhabiting aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were isolated. 22 of the isolates were identified as unrecorded bacterial species in Korea that had ${\geq}98.7%$ 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with published species. The aerobic strains isolated were Kurthia gibsonii and Massilia plicata. Also identified were four facultative anaerobic strains: Bacillus hisashii, Enterococcus rotai, Paenibacillus vini, and Pediococcus pentosaceus. 16 strictly anaerobic strains were identified as Bacteroides xylanolyticus, Carnobacterium maltaromaticum, Clostridium argentinense, Clostridium beijerinckii, Clostridium butyricum, Clostridium cavendishii, Clostridium diolis, Clostridium frigidicarnis, Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum, Clostridium sphenoides, Clostridium subterminale, Cutibacterium acnes, Paraclostridium bifermentans, Prevotella paludivivens, and Romboutsia lituseburensis. Based on the examination of morphological, cultural, physiological, and biochemical properties of the isolates, descriptive information of these previously unrecorded species is provided here.
